Aledo Rhubarb Fest

Aledo Rhubarb Fest

Wish I could have seen this earlier as it sounds like a really fun festival.  Why is it that the smallest towns can produce the best summer fun? I say that because I was told by an alderman that it is so hard to find volunteers in Peru. We do July 3 which isn't much fun for a lot of people in Peru, could we add another event and could we get enough volunteers? I really think it is more about finding people who know how to organize and get it done but it does bring in the tourist dollars.

There are many many factors in promoting a successful celebration or a series of celebrations one feeding off the other. Timing being huge and is the weather going to be supportive of the celebration.
Amount of money needed and sources available to obtain it from. What and how many different age groups are you trying to attract. Amount of people who will volunteer and amount of people with particular and necessary skills to lead them. What celebration is your group best suited to hold that would assure success. What type of event do you feel is needed and people will attend in Peru?
Yours and others interest is a start now if others would send in their ideas as a follow up maybe by the end of the summer Peru could have a new event. In conclusion I state that the celebration should not be the goal itself but a means of achieving the goal such as a splash pad and eventually a swimming pool. This would therefore fill a short range and a long range plan.

Possibly we could build on the Maud Powell festival, adding more events, outdoor events, races, sports, outdoor vendors, other types of music Some of the things done in Aledo could be done in Peru of course with our own variations.

The city leaders don't want to do anything unless their family members, friends, or businesses make money off of it or it was their idea.

When I was at Parksides graduation 2weeks ago there was a clean cut , early 30's ? , semi stocky, tall gentleman that was shaking hands and talking to people before the event and telling that he was running for Mayor of Peru next year. I've been out of the area for many years and he seemed familiar , but does anyone know who this was?

I know who it is but don't know if I can say on here. I voted for Harl like many others but was duped like the rest of Peru. This new candidate will definitely have my vote from when I questioned him about what he stands for on the issues.

Lois, I believe that the opportunity of a successful event in Peru has to be new and with a committee of its own. There has been too much stagnation of the present committees and there are always those two or three everlasting members who have etched lifelong rules in stone and will not update.
Even the newest of committees in Peru are nothing but a new title with the same personnel for leadership that has been on other committees. Simply take a study of how many committees and for what length of time certain selected personnel have occupied committee seats. For example a Design and Review Committee recently eliminated a sure thing in a $1,000,000 building for downtown Peru. This building incidentally was approved by the Downtown Development Committee.
Peru needs the input of its youth desperately but has a Mayor who has failed to provide the means to obtain this need. I am sure that evidence of this failure are going to be emphasized and brought forward in the future.

How many people are really interested in Maud Powell? All the statue does is take up parking spaces in downtown Peru.

Does anyone supervise or even train the summer help responsible for the upkeep of the parks? They're cutting grass this morning when it's wet and actually doesn't need cutting. They keep going over and over the same location and they go right over garbage laying on the ground, the lawnmower throws it and they leave it.

Kudos to the people of Aledo as they had a true family festival. I can't even imagine how rhubarb wine tastes and it probably has limited partakers of the beverage.

H. TOM, In reference to your dislike of committees - in Peru they should be called hoops because they are just another devise that you have to jump through when playing the improvement or building game or they are a cover-up so that elected officials do not have to shoulder the responsibilities they are elected for.
I if starting a activity would like to do it separate of the city government and have a activity group overlooked by a financial board.
Why do so many clubs etc. first go to the city for a donation when they are doing a fundraiser? MANY PEOPLE TODAY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO JUSTLY PAY THEIR TAXES THAT THE CITY IS USING TO GIVE DONATIONS.

Peru has great parks to stage activities in. The original Veterans Park, now called Rotary Park could be the most beautiful park in the area and it has a military monument in it that has to have great historic value. Just a great place to hold the band concert in, book sale, ice cream social or a farmers market. Another park which is suitable in size for most local functions is Centennial Park. Both parks are filled with trees providing shade in the summer and are safe from traffic. Rotary ( Veterans ) would need Port a potties as would Centennial because of its vast size.

I'm sure you'll be the first to volunteer Lois? Oh that's right, your contribution to making Peru better is to complain about everything in it......

Thank you, I'm glad you noticed and I will continue until things improve. What would you like me to volunteer for? What are you volunteering for?
Peru Fun Fair for July has been cancelled and it was not for lack of volunteers.
