I'm not buying it. First they played the "tried and true" asbestos card. That made no sense to me because any asbestos is now free, blowing in the wind and leaching into the ground. Now they are saying it is an insurance investigation. Might be some truth to that, but it is not our problem. I can't see the building providing any additional evidence. The owner is going to delay the clean up as long as possible unless the City does something. Start fining them $10,000 a week and I guarantee the sight will be cleaned up by the end of June.

Where does the EPA stand with the issue and have they finished their investigation? Time for some more phone calls and letters on that building, my Westclox file multiplying over the years.

Speaking of Westclox rumor has it TEST is moving into the old Coke building and not building now? I heard the price to build kept getting jacked up and I am curious if that was because of the design and review board or Dj Sickley the contractor?

Kristy, it was because of the Design and Review Board, go and read their minutes from January. No surprise that Test decided to buy and instead of build.
They sure know how to discourage growth in the city, at least new building. Most people would have done exactly what TEST did and if it wasn't necessary to have a building in Peru, others would have moved on to another city.

How come the 15 year old that is supposed to be doing his community service at the fire department isn't? Chief King said in a NT article that he was a good kid and just needed a little guidance. He told the judge that he could do his community service in Peru's fire station. So the judge sentenced him to just that. However you drive by the fire dept and they have a summer help teen washing trucks and windows. I guess for Peru free help isn't good enough. We'd rather pay someone's relative than use court ordered free labor. How is this kid supposed to do his court ordered service? This whole Westclox / Peru Fire situation has stunk from the first night .

And Mayor Harl will not appoint anyone new to the committee.

Isnt it the four full time fire engineers that are paid by the city (taxpayers) their job to clean station and trucks while waiting for a call so they can take first truck out??? Yes, chief King said that about the kid. How does he know what he stated about him? King must know him personally to make statement that "he is a good kid.". Rodney could have used the kid when he organized clean up days. I can't believe taxpayers are paying to have windows at fire station and trucks cleaned. UNBELIEVABLE! I guess the volunteer fireman are too good to volunteer a couple hours either. Overhaul of that department needs to be looked into.

The full time firemen at peru said they did not want the kids who started the westclox fire at the station. The youth did service at Lasalle Fire Department, and other places as well.

I did read a few months ago that the 4 full time positions at the fire department clean and maintain fire apparatus. So to pay for summer help does seem like a waste of taxpayers money. Where can we find a cope of the full-time employees job description? Could it be put on this blog?

Could someone please explain why we are paying summer helpers (3) to work with TEST, (2) to work at the landfill (I thought the person in charge of that retired and was not replaced - what do they do there?), and (1) at the AIRPORT?

Peru taxpayers are paying summer helpers(3) to work with TEST because we always have. We also have (2) at the landfill and (1) at the airport because what else are we going to do with them?
How much summer help has been hired and who decided their pay scale? What is their pay scale?
After three years in office could a survey of what people think the grade evaluation of the mayor should be?

I believe I read on one of the agendas of the Peru Recreation Commission that they were deciding how much the summer help would be paid.
Would you believe that?
This may go back to the time when they hired summer help for the pool.

"Determine Wages for Summer Recreation Employees 4-10-2012"

According to the information I have received we hired 25 summer helpers whose wages vary from $8.25 to $8.75. We also hired 8 that we call "lead men" whose rate is $11.00. The rec department hired a tennis and a handicraft supervisor at $12.00 and 2 tennis assistants ($8.25) and 2 handicraft assistants (l @ $9.30 and 1 @ $8.50).

Why would we hire a tennis supervisor and two tennis assistants when we are eliminating a tennis court? Makes no sense.

Don't you understand 9:02? It's because that's what the recreation commission wants to do with your money and they answer to no one.

GET RID OF THE REC COMMISSION -- ITS A SCAM -- LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE.

Looking for a clean-up need. Let's cut the hayfield north of the housing complex on 251 and finish or fill in the swimming pool in the Marquette Apartments. Bothe are eyesores to the neighborhood.

Good idea, let's all complain about the city wasting money on summer help kids who need jobs so they don't leach off their parents. I don't think the complaints should be about the city hiring people, it should be about how the city uses the employees. It's not right to complain about the city using money to hire people during a time when all employment is down.

Anonymous said...

4:58 I cannot believe you would make that statement. If employment is down so should be hiring.

Anonymous said...

4:58 Yes it is right to complain about the city hiring summer help because many of them as seen riding around on their lawnmowers and the work is not getting down. Without motivated help, and without leadership, we're wasting our citizens tax money.

TEST isn't building because they are in fear of losing the big water testing contract from the city since they have already lost the smaller landfill contract - it wouldn't look good politically to build a new million dollar building when they are receiving so much from the city in a time when city funds are short - they want to remain small and stay irrelevant and off the radar - all boils down to image

Hey 11:49...TEST isn't building not because of any contract..it's because of good business sense. The rumor is the building was going to cost more than the budget allowed. Now TEST is supposedly going to move into the former Coke building on Rt 6 and move their business there. From a monetary standpoint, that makes sense. As far as any contracts, unless you have the ear and vote of the City, it seems that TEST does a really good job and helps Peru whenever they are asked. Maybe you know more than we do. I for one believe that Peru has more pressing issues right now than TEST. Congratulations to them and good luck with their new home.

Hey 9:11....Big City contracts are an issue when so much money is freely handed out with out consideration! The landfill contract proved we can save money shopping around.

I AM the ear and vote of this community and will voice my vote come the next election! And how arrogant for you to assume otherwise!

So yes any needless money spent IS A PRESSING ISSUE!
