Taken From Recreation Minutes June 12

Peru Recreation Commission 06/12/2012 Meeting, City Hall The meeting was called to order at 6:35 pm by Bryan Hartman, President. Board members in attendance were Janice Grabowski, Ray Zborowski, Ron Kelsey along with Peru Recreation Director, Lynda Kasik. Absent were John Deisbeck, Tom Stuart, and Larry Weide.

Guests in attendance were Mayor Scott Harl, Alderman Bob Ankiewicz, Jeff Dankert (observing for the News Tribune) and at the Commission’s request, Mike Richetta, representing Chamlin and Associates. Mayor Harl addressed the Commission, providing a rough estimate from Len Trovero Construction and a second rough estimate from Ladzinski Cement Finishing Company for a double Pickleball court at 28th Street Park. Dimensions would be 64 X 64 feet. This would give the City of Peru the option of converting the newly painted Pickleball courts back to a tennis court if the Pickleball program is not successful, but still provide the public with access to the sport of Pickleball. The estimates were just for the pad and excavation. The estimates did not include painting, striping, fencing, nets and lighting. The estimates were for $25,000.00 and $17,635.00 respectively. The Commission thanked the Mayor for having the vision to perhaps in the future create additional Courts at 28th Street. The discussion was tabled until our Budget meeting in January 2013.

New Business: Lynda updated us on numbers for the Summer Recreation Programs; Cheerleading Camp-50 participants, Baseball – 40 participants, Arts & Crafts – 100 participants per day, tennis – 50 participants. The Programs are going well and are well attended. The playground equipment for Nickeloid Park has not been ordered yet. Dave Bartley informed us Public Works had not done any investigation into a piece of equipment. American Nickeloid donated $4000 to be used for playground equipment at the Nickeloid Park. A discussion followed that the Rec Commission could match the $4000 if needed to purchase something adequate. Lynda will investigate and report back to the Commission. Janice updated the Commission on the tennis, pickleball and basketball resurfacing project. All courts should be open for play this weekend. Janice will meet with Frank Taylor on some signage necessary for the courts. One small sign (already present at 28th Street Park) per court to read “No skateboarding, no rollerblading, no bicycles, tennis shoes only.” Also, Janice will get Frank’s approval on a temporary banner announcing Pickleball Clinic information for 28th Street Court.

Ray asked the Commission to brainstorm on ways to raise money to offset the cost of the annual firework display. This would be for next year’s display. A 50/50 raffle is a consideration. Discussion was tabled until next meeting. Also a motion was made by Ray Zborowski to place a port-a-potty at 28th Street Park for the months of May through October at a cost of $65 a month to the low bid of Steve Michelini. There was one there two years ago. The motion was seconded by Ron Kelsey and unanimously approved. Meeting closed

What is our Mayor thinking? If pickle ball is not successful he'll pay to turn the newly marked court back to a tennis court and then pay big bucks to add new pickle ball courts. And, for those of you who live in the neighborhood of 28th street park pay attention to the fact that he references "LIGHTING".

So now they're going to try to raise money for the fireworks? Why didn't they start that years ago. They waited until Rod showed them what to do. Thanks Rod!

Looks like a functional and progressive group of committed volunteers working for a better Peru.

More courts with lights? You mean playing till 11:00 am in the neighbors backyards? That is the vision of this group. Is the Mayor trying to stir the pot or is he in left field?

My guess is the Mayor is trying to form a Park District so he can suck MORE money from us!

City ordaniance states people have to be out of the parks by 10pm.

So 2:06. Do you understand how many ordinances this city has and how many we don't abide by? It's just a matter of who you are.

You can change ordinances! But why waste money on lights and more courts that are not being utilized? Lois help us understand the thinking of lights and more courts.

Yeah Lois. Please help us understand the thinking of our city on the topic of pickle ball. Lights and more courts if pickle ball is NOT a success?

We should really thank Merry Noonan, everytime she plans a concert it rains. So I knew it would rain Friday.

Not sure what the heck H, Tom is talking about concert went off without a hitch. Probably the biggest crowd yet.

Oh and by the way all capital letters is considered rude when it comes to blogging etiquette.

With such a successful concert despite the horrible storm, maybe Dalzell will get their head out of the sand and come to realize there could be a ton of money coming their way.

12:08 If you look at the time of the post it was right during the storm and he probably assumed that the concert would be cancelled due to safety concerns and based on the forecast at the time. But the skies cleared up by around 6:30 and the concert went off, but with quite a few hitches. None of them were the fault of the promoter however. Hours of concession sales were lost , as well as the opening band performance, and traffic was unusually backed up since the stage manger could not clear the venue until lightning was far enough away. We should all ( for or against the concert) be grateful no one was hurt and the worst of the storm occurred BEFORE the venue had filled with that large crowd you are talking about, about 10000 from the nt estimates.

We all know what happens when someone assumes something right. Please show me an event of this maganitude thagt doesn't have some disruptions. Overall, police, fire, ems and promoter reported the concert a huge success, with the largest crowd so far, with no injuries and only a handfull of incidents. Congradulations to all the people that put in the hard work to make it a success.

Unless our mayor made a trip up to the 28th street park, it is my understanding that he has NOT been there to check it out and see where the pickleball court is located and how the park in general is set up with the porta potty next to the childrens slide and the court almost in the backyard of 2 residents and very close to one other. It is one thing to delegate responsibility but the one in charge should know exactly what the situation is. Is this too much to ask? Maybe he needs to ask our City Attorney.

where does the mayor go what does he do-oh that is right he is busy putting his name on signs with taxpayer money for his next election-good luck with that

There has not been a port-a-potty at 28th St. Park for at least 15 years.
