Summer Heat Getting to Our Alderman

Tonight at the council meeting during the public comment I asked 2 questions, nothing that would or should cause anything more than the answer I was looking for.

I asked if they realized that there were members of the Recreation Commission that were attending less than 50% of the meetings? Immediately Ald. Waldorf yelled at me "why don't you volunteer" and on and on. Of course my question was asked right after Ald. Waldorf and Ald. Ankiewicz has commented on what a wonderful job the Recreation Commission does, period.

Second question, what about the advertising sign attached to the tricycle sitting in Grabowskis driveway on Marquette Rd. as it has sat there for several weeks and I wanted to know if a permit had been obtained but Frank Taylor did not know. I then mentioned that this type of advertising was not included in the recently passed sign ordinance and that it was starting to look pretty tacky sitting in his driveway all the time. the ordinance also states that if the sign is not expressly permitted in the ordinance it is not allowed.

Mayor Harl said it was no different than a truck with advertising sitting in someones driveway. I disagree. Ald. Ferrari then exploded that I was bringing up pickleball again and that I was always complaining about something and then he mentioned "that blog".

I Will reread the sign ordinance once again.

My thanks to Ald. Perez and Ald Potthoff for bringing some reasoning to the process.

I relay this information for all my bloggers who always tell us to express our feelings at city council. I did and they try to eat you alive.

But to be fair they were not happy with Ald. Perez when he tried to get information on the fireworks bidding process and let him know also.

I am reminded of a movie called the stepford wives, where all the women were robots designed to shut up and praise the town leaders. I believe they are considering a sequel. The working title is Positive in Peru.
If the city is upset about this blog, they ain't seen nothin yet. There are many more people than Lois who are upset with the arrogance of the power brokers in this city. Stay tuned in this election year. It's going to be like nothing they have ever seen. When you ignore and marginalize dissenting opinions, you take away opportunities for compromise. If that is what they want, that is what they will get.

Hey Lois it's not a sign, it's a bike with a sign on it. How could a bike possibly fall under a sign ordinance? Talk about looking bad maybe somebody should pass an ordinance about parking eight cars I'm a yard and driveway.

Ferrari couldnt add 2+2 if Ankiewicz didnt tell him how to answer! Typical city of Peru business trying quiet the people looking to make a positive change to our city.

We continue to waste tax payer money has anyone seen the new assistant chief truck...its the old police chiefs SUV...WHY did we but that F250 and the assistant chief couldnt drive that very expensive truck...$38,000 just wasted on a truck that the city worker drives...Are you kidding me.

Lastly, I was disappointed to hear a city worker was busted for drug possession and still employed by the city. What example are we setting for kids today. UNREAL that the Mayor tolerates the behavior of the management the Public Works and Fire Chief need to go due to poor management and fiscal irresponsibility.

Harl you have lost my vote since you allow this unreal spending go on..but we all know you are in campaign mode all ready...get a grip you are not the president we need a Mayor who works all term...not just half a term

OTHER THAN PEREZ, POTHOFF, AND MAYSZAK, THE WHOLE BUNCH IN PERU SHOULD BE FIRED!! TOO BAD THAT MR. PEREZ CAN'T FIND OUT THE TRUTH ON WHAT THE COST FOR FIREWORKS REALLY IS- ALONG WITH THE AMOUNT USED AT THE SHOW. AS FAR AS MR. RADTKE, WHAT A BUTT KISSING LET DOWN!! IF HE IS NOT IN HIS WARD ANYMORE THEN ELIMINATE HIM AND ELECT SOMEONE ELSE. SO MUCH FOR CHANGE.

Apparently they do not like to be questioned by anyone (including one of their own) and they most definitely defend the rec commission to the hilt. Don't they realize that defending someone or something to the degree that they do makes one wonder WHY? I thought citizens were entitled to ask questions and get answers without being attacked. Shouldn't the mayor take control of a meeting that gets out of hand? If they fight amongst themselves how can we expect them to accomplish anything for us? A town needs to unite in order to grow. Just my opinion!

Anonymous said...

Lois: Why do you think they get hostile when any questions are asked regarding the rec commission?

I heard about the request that Perez made on the radio this morning on WLPO. It's a shame that a public official can't ask for the detailed process of how a cost to the city is bid out and paid for. It's a shame that our city leaders directly go against ordinance and not provide this information to him. If there is nothing to hide, then why doesn't the City provide him with the answers? Don't we have a city attorney that is able to answer these issues too? If Perez is wrong, then please provide us a link to the city website to prove him wrong. I know some of the leaders follow this blog as Anon. Provide Perez with the answers he needs to end it all-if you can. Can't? Then provide it to the Attorney General if that makes you more comfortable. So sad it got to that point, but every citizen has rights too know the truth too.

Lois , Thanks for going to the city meeting . i would like to go but my better judgement keeps me home . I would like to say this though .IT NOT WHO YOU ARE ITS WHO YOU KNOW , AND ITS NOT WHAT YOU WANT ITS WHAT YOUR WILLING TO KISS . This should be the city logo . As far as the two alderman i feel sorry for them that thay can't control them selfs . (IDOITS )Its pretty bad when the mayor and the city lawyer have to go elswhere to find out how to handle city business . We should record the councile so everyone in the city could see our leaders in action ! Put it on the radio ( wlpo ) and channel 13 on cable . then the none believers would believe .

Just read the News Tribune on-line. Why would Alderman Perez be the one to tell another Official to not talk to a citizen that way? Is that not common courtesy to treat citizens with respect during a public meeting? Lois, could you give us more details on what took place at that meeting. Some of us dont get the paper or make it to meetings. It sounded like a riot took place. Kudos To alderman Perez for contacting the States Attorney's Office. That takes a backbone and a stand up against the status quo.
Alderman Perez, I know you read this blog and i'm sure you will be scrutinized for doing what's right but keep that thick skin and keep fighting for us!!!!

Sec. 110-406. - Parking of bicycle
No person shall park a bicycle upon a street other than upon the roadway against the curb or upon the sidewalk in a rack to support the bicycle or against a building or at the curb in such a manner as to afford the least obstruction to pedestrian traffic.

Ald. Perez is fast becoming an empty barrel rolling down the street. This guy talks big saying he's going to the attorney general and looks pretty dumb when the city clerk says he had the documentation on the fireworks. Talk is cheap and everyone is rapidly learning how worthless some of it can be.

Anonymous said...

There is a difference between constructive criticism and complaining for the sake of complaining. Lois and the rest of this blog have nothing better to do but sit on the computer and complain about the same thing over and over. I have news for you the contributors to this blog make up a small percentge of the population of Peru. Isn't it the job of the alderman to represent all the people, not just the few complainers? Please tell me how many people have called there alderman or the city to complain about the pickle ball courts. I have an answer, 2 people. Should the city spend thousands of dollars to build a pickle all court to appease 2 citizens? If they did I would suspect you would just find something new to complain about.

Also we can add yet another attempt for Rodney at trying to get his way with the fireworks. IMO one if the most wasteful and worthless alderman Peru has. I can't wait to cast a vote against this guy.

Peru Town Forum said...

Since it appears that the 2 previous comments have come from the same source I will answer both here. With regards to your first comment, it seems that you need to take a reading comprehension class or 2. Or perhaps your hearing is impaired. The reason the complaints were filed is because he did NOT receive the information and if the information has been discarded, it means this city is in worse shape than anyone has realized. I personally have tried to get information and they said it was not available. Just yesterday, I asked about finance meetings of the past and I was told that this information can't be found. Only information is available since Mayor Harl took office. Where is the rest?

With regard to the P.B. court, are you telling me that you don't know that 2 people complaining about the court in their backyard are one more than the amount of people who convinced the city to buy the equipment and change the purpose of the tennis court? Reading, seeing and counting don't seem to be something you do to well.

Did Alderman Perez get frightened by some fireworks when he was a kid? What is this fixation of his all about. It seems to have gone well, everyone complied with the no alcohol zone. So can he just let it go, please? He is getting so old with his high handed attempt to take over not just the fireworks, but the whole darn town. Glad as heck the redistricting didn't make him MY alderman. Sheesh

11:25 Typically the number of people who complain or take action tend to be small, especially in a community where those who do get "warned" all the time. One of the primary functions of democratic government is to protect the rights of the minority, but autocratic forms of government control with fear and suppress opposition. Change comes, and like it or not , when it comes it is going to protect your rights right alongside the people you think are troublemakers. No government is perfect but some are much more tolerant of dissent. Peru may do many politically popular things but its mandate is to govern fairly and with absolute integrity.
It starts and ends there.

Do you, 11:25, have access to the data which indicates how many citizens have called THEIR aldermen? Are complaint calls kept as a matter of public record? (HA!) If you are indeed correct 11:25, then thank you for showing yourself as a city official or one with close ties.

Finally, 11:25... you are now a contributor to this blog! Welcome to the "small" percentage of Peru. ;)

No a rec commission voted on the pickle all court. Maybe you should learn to count as it would take more than one vote to get it passed the commission.

Did Rodney contact any of the other people on the rec commission or did he just jump the gun and go to the AG office make everybody else look bad?

Anonymous said...

Hey 10:51 open your eyes. The ordinance you quoted does not say you can not park a bike in your driveway as long as it doesn't provide an obstruction to pedestrian traffic. If the ordinance makes it illegal to park a bike in your driveway I'm calling the cops, because the 12 and 14 year old kids next to me are getting a ticket. There bikes are in the driveway all summer long.

Anonymous said...

11:25 As Lois stated above you are totally misinformed and don't know what you are talking about. The 2 people you are referencing are trying to save the city thousands of dollars. The city (mayor) has already gotten cost estimates for new pickle ball courts to satisfy ONE individuals desires. Think before you speak and get the facts straight.

Anonymous said...

Cheap shot for Rod. Its easy to make claims against the rec. committee when they were not present to defend the claim.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:25 according to the paper, Clerk Bartley stated Ald. Perez did receive information he requested, BUT the rest of what was requested had been discarded. It also says the city recreation is to keep records for 10 years. So this shows the park district can't follow state laws so they should be held accountable according to those laws. I guess Ald.Perez notified the state to show he won't tolerate "Government StoneWalling"

Since $20,000 is the designated number upon which it is determined if the fireworks are to be bid or not bid a brief explanation of the cost of the fireworks this year and if they were let on a open bid would be of importance. Also the cost of the fireworks for the last fifth-teen years and what company was awarded the fireworks and was each award by bid or not by bid? Some good friendly advise is that its a lot smarter to leave a dog sleep than it is to keep kicking her to wake her up. Sounds like you guys have been kicking too hard the last two nights and you may be getting bite reaL BAD!

According to the news reports the Peru fireworks went off without any problems. Is this another attempt by Perez to create 3rd of July controvesy by claiming the rc. department was not allowing him the opportunity to plan the event and be the center of attention for this event? Lets all consider the source and I'll take the rec. board over the self promotion work of this guy anyday.

The president of the Rec Com Bryan Hartman and aldermen Radtke and Ferrari took plenty of cheap shots at 2 of their First Ward constituents the night before. As I have stated none of them are interested in anything but what their personal associates want.

Peru Town Forum said...

2:14 PM

According to my understanding the fireworks have not been going out for bid and actually the manner in which it done this year had to be a prearranged deal because as I have said time and time and time again, no reputable pyrotechnic company would have left themselves open to no job for the 4th of July. They left that date open for Peru knowing it was for them. And Peru went out for bids knowing all other companies were taken for that date and time.

From: Rodney Perez

Great question!.. Yes, I carbon copied the secretary, and president of the commission, along with the Mayor, Clerk's office, and Alderman Mayszak.

I made my first request in May, and several other plea's up through June 25th.
I was more than patient, and cooperative until it became clear some of my requests were ignored.

I appreciate the fact the commission is made up of appointed volunteers. However, they were made aware of FOIA laws and need to understand their position has state mandated accountability when handling tax payer's funds, and city contracts.

When I was notified by the commission some contracts were discarded, I asked if they would contact the Pyrotechnic to get a copy of the 2010, 2011 contracts along with the "2012 product Script" (This request went un-answered)So I was left no other alternative but to climb the ladder of authority.(period)

Lastly...The reason the 2012 product script was needed was so the product in the contract could be audited. A licensed pyrotechnic and firefighter are the only personnel allowed within the hot zone of fireworks, this allowed me the authority to audit the product.

Thank You,
Rodney Perez

Or is it that Ald. Rod has a special company that he prefers or has some preference? And why? Its very obvious to most that Rod is fooling nobody.

You are right, Ald. Perez is not trying to fool anybody but it is evident that some of the other aldermen are doing just that. They should be more than willing to open the facts of the Peru government to te citizens of Peru who pay the bills and THEIR SALARY.
You never bite the hand that feeds you but I guess some don't know that. That hand is the taxpayers of this city.

Anonymous said...

Rod! Didn't you ask the Mayor or are you too important to request these items? Makes us wonder about your process and your press seeking motivation. Hot zones and certified pyrotech? Are you serious?

This years fireworks are over and it is now the best time to prepare for next year. The first step in this preparation should be a written letter of resignation to the Mayor by all members of the Recreation Board who have served over five (5) years. The second step is to instill new personalities onto this board and to redefine its responsibilities. No matter how good a 1957 idea was I cannot believe that some changes have not taken place in the ordinance. This issue is way overdue to be wrapped up and finalized as is the ridiculous handling of the pickle ball classic. Eventually this administration and council must move on and start to govern other city affairs.

Anonymous said...

I would be more inclined to believe that the rec member who contracts the fireworks has a preference as to who he chooses. He's the one who threw away pertinent information.

Last nights city council meeting was the all time classic of Peru Politics the only comparison thought of is the movie "Rocky". From all indications the 5'2" 70+ year old Gramma Lois put both opponents D.W. and T.F. down for the count of 10. Rumor is that both opponents went down with a bang similar to the sound of pickle ball.

Is it true that peru's fire department (apparatus) and some fireman going to be at Thr kid rock concert? Volunteering? Being paid? If so by who? Crowd control again? With spotlights? 3 1/2 hours to drink alcohol before opening band at 7:30. Than another 1 1/2 hours of beverages before kid rocks performance. Total 5 hours not including rocks time performance. Think of $$$$$$ bring made on alcohol and pizza. Not including ticket sales. The city could make some $$$$$$ for road blocks! Need a
Blog title for this topic. Is there a family no alcohol area?? Think of all the under 21 concert goers that will be attending concert.

Lois 2:44. You don't know a damn thing about commercial fireworks or how to order them, so why are you acting so high and mighty. Are you being tutored by Perez? Facts you are stating are completely false and some don't make sense. Stick to what you know. Perez may have told you his company would supply many more shots than what Peru got. Well, if you knew anything about these shows it's not only the number of shots but also the sizes of each shot. Prices can vary greatly between 3" and 4" and 6" shots. Maybe you should buy the show next year and absorb all the comments later.

Actually I'm HOT right now due to some aldermans unprofessional behavior at the council meeting. Alderman Ferrari, what is the city's ordinance in regard to BOATS AND TRAILERS BEING PARKED IN DRIVEWAYS OF RESIDENCES? In your ward I have seen three that have been quite obvious. And 2 are within 3 blocks on Marquette. Maybe they haven't been noticed by you or there is NO ORDINANCE, or does it depend WHOSE (name) or driveway they are parked and stored when not in use. Please answer Alderman Ferrari since this I do believe is your ward. No wonder this town forum is not your cup of tea.

Perez has stated time and time again that he has asked the Park and Rec district to bid according to the IML which to me means he wants a fair bidding process? Closed bidding is the way to go. If Perez wants to handle the bidding let him deal with it. I will credit Rod for not starting this mess before the celebration. As the previous poster said-- Now the time to hash it out for next year or we will continue hearing this again next year. Is this head-ache really worth it for the district to put up with? Make the aldermen handle it and walk away! Sheesh!!

After it became public knowledge when the picture was posted it was moved, I don't know for sure but think that partly on the street and partly in the park was an illegal parking and it was removed. This time it was totally on the street and a hazard because it blocked the view for cars traveling west on 28th Street.

After reading the newstrib the only reaction I have is that this is a rerun of a meeting a few months ago. Perez has a problem with the fireworks show. He has wanted to change the show to Baker Lake, he has wanted to move the beer to Centennial Park, he has wanted to change the date for special preference to his company, he has wanted to be in charge of the bidding, he has accussed the rec. committee of rigging the bids, he has declared a safety hazard, he has gone door to door at Baker Lake and declared the neighborhood wanted fireworks and then was presented with facts that the residents were very much against the idea. And now the family area to the landfill? Is that safe? What in the world is going on in Peru? Can't the Mayor get involved and send this guy to his room? Is he in charge of the fire department?

Anonymous said...

9:48 Obviously you are not a person who attends council meetings on a regular basis (if at all) because you are truly uninformed. Start attending meetings, get the true facts, then you can make intelligent decisions and comments even if yours differ from Alderman Perez. At least he's thinking about making Peru a better place to live and looking out for all residents not just a select few. Thank you alderman Perez.

Anonymous said...

Does the Ald.Rod actually believe that the rec commission had documents destroyed that proved that his claim for the fireworks prices that he got for July 19th or August 3rd or July 5th were better than the ones that went off on July 3rd? Did we all forget that the fireworks were priced for July 3rd! Does he believe that this is important enough to declare a Coverup?

Anonymous said...

Yes making Peru a better place by placing famalies on a landfill. anon 10:18 are you serious?

Anonymous said...

And, you don't think water street is contaminated. The land fill has to meet strict EPA rules and regulations. Wasn't there talk a while back about putting a golf course in that location?

Sherry Mayszak said...

From the News Tribune July 29, 2011 article "Baker Lake might host Peru fireworks - Rec Commission President Bryan Hartman suggested the city landfill on the south side of the river as a public gathering place. Mayszak asked if that would be the location of the beer garden".

Yes 10:18 I absolutely agree that Ald. Perez is trying to make Peru a better place.

Anonymous said...

9:48 I can't even go into all the wrong in your rant, but the funniest one is " he has declared a safety hazard" . Like that is a bad thing. Most people look at safety from the perspective if nobody got hurt it must have been safe. Being pro active with safety means preparing for the whatifs and looking at hazards. The mentality of people who say things like, " if you are dumb enough to get near the tracks you deserve to get hurt" is so ridiculous it hardly deserves response. But it is obvious they never had to deal with a personal injury lawyer who would tear this city apart if anyone did get hurt. I am certainly not endorsing the proposed family area across the river, but I wont knee jerk dismiss it because it is landfill.

Anonymous said...

Beer garden in a landfill across the river with limited access! Please just say what you mean, you don't like those sweaty young adults drinking beer on Water street during the fireworks. Not all of us prefer sitting in our garage drinking beer. Of course it may be better than the insect filled swamp that has a gravel one lane road that is called the landfill. No toilets. no running water, no electrical. Perfect for the family area and beer garden. Is this the best we can ask from the recreation council and Sherry M.?

Anonymous said...

To:9:48, 10:25 & whom it may concern:-)

First and Foremost, Alderman Mayszak-"Thank you for pointing out that article."

Secondly, "I have no preferenced company."(period)My recommendation is that "All" competetive bidding should be fairly advertised with the same details given to all interested parties; and, sealed bids must be opened during a public meeting.
As far as the landfill is concerned: If the EPA gives the ok...It is a very large and nicely grassed location. With a couple of high powered generated lights, and a few porta-potties it would add a nice addition to view the fireworks from.

In regards to the nice spin from 10:25 I can fully understand how you would pull out the words that never came from me, such as: "Destroyed," and "Cover-Up."
However I did use the word "Discarded" which came directly from the commission.

Regardless of the reasoning I chose to view those contracts from 2009, and 2010 is simply invalid. The Valid point is... Contracts and Documents must be kept on file for 5-10 years(depending on the document.)If requests are ignored (which most were)Then the next step would be to file a formal complaint.

Lastly- As Alderman Mayszak pointed out with the land fill; Many of these recommendations such as the Landfill idea never originated from me.
As we see with this posting of the minutes- The 50/50 idea is being mentioned by the rec.
Many things I bring up were once discussed but then dropped. In fact, the Action plan we are currently working on, was first brought up by Alderman Potthoff a couple years ago.(but dropped)

This shows me we have a community of great minds and ideas. It may take 50 separate aldermen to bring up the same 50 ideas until eventually someone takes it to fruition; it may not be me, but I'll be the 51st to try my darndest to bring it to fruition.

Being that the commission has been having discussions about fundraising, and searching ways to cut the cost of Fireworks...Hopefully we can all work these ideas together to make great things happen.

"Have a Great Weekend!!".. I'm over and out;-)

Thank you,
Rodney Perez

WAIT!! 2:14 snuck in on me, and must add a quick line...

From Rodney Perez
To: 2:14

The whole "landfill" topic have been only "inquiries" People do that when brainstorming.

That nice grassy landfill area is in much better shape than sitting on gravel and tracks. The landfill has a better landscape than most yards i see.
If 10-100 families choose to sit there for an hour to watch fireworks, why would anything more than a few high powered generated lights and a few porta potties with attached water to sanitize their hands be any different than what families are using on water street?

Thanks! ;-)

1:26 get out of your cave. There is a personal injury lawyer on every block. You have two much different approaches----one approach is making sure you are proactive and doing all you can to insure safety----approach two is finding every possible way to prevent the celebration. Your right every attorney would love to litigate a situation in which a city official yells "Coverup". I also hope that we still have some legal residents in the county that will step in a jury box and say "If your stupid enough to sit on the railroad trax and not move while a train is crossing, then we won't grant your drunken relatives the 50/50 ticket proceeds from the fireworks". And anon 1:26 did you think about the landfill approach before or just Believe it was a good idea?

Anonymous said...

@anon 3:53 I do believe according to the most recent post that the landfill idea dates back to when you were in your late 20s early 30s
your open mind may be stagnant with the status quo of Peru. Please understand that train on the tracks continues on with or without you. You may want to jump on while you can or you'll be left behind wishing you had. WHOOOWHOOOOOchugachugachugachugaaa

Anonymous said...

3:53 I was addressing one statement. He raised a valid safety concern, and if someone had gotten hurt on the tracks or the wall had fallen it would have been a difficult case to defend for any lawyer. The city took the families and put them in a real dump, not a sealed and covered one.. Then for good measure they sent a train through and let people drink in the alcohol free zone. I'll head back to the cave now to study for the bar. Feel free to go back to you mouth breathing practice.

Harl is the ringmaster but he just sits and lets all the other alderman ruin their chances of getting elected . He starts the arguments and turns them all on eachother . Harl and 3/4 of city employees need to go . Like the old guy that walks around the same 3 blocks every day picking up cigarette butts downtown . Every day hes in the same spot picking up trash in the 1700, 1800, and 1900 blocks of 4th street and the 800 block of Peoria st. .
