Please notice that the Public Property Mtg will discuss the ordinance for the Recreation Commission. AND without being approved by committee it is being sent to the City Council for approval.

Is this proper procedure? Remember that committee has only 2 members and if one does not agree what happens then? Someone must feel pretty positive about their actions to have agendas posted with this information. Make your own call on this one.

Doesn't sound kosher to me. If committee has not approved the ordinance how can it be on the council meeting agenda to be approved? Doesn't it have to be approved by committee first? Have both members of this committee agreed to this proposal? How did it get to the city attorney if both members of the committee have not approved the revisions? Isn't that a waste of taxpayers money?

All of the statements and questions above are good, honest questions. Such a shame that all representation does not have the same qualities.
There was quite a broadcast on the radio today about how Farmers Markets benefit a community. Surveying the area it was found that most towns surrounding Peru have Markets during the spring, summer and fall. Why doesn't Peru hold one on Saturday mornings at the Rotary Park or behind the City Building?

I believe it was about3 or 4 years ago that Boggio wanted to come into Peru and sell sweet corn. He was not allowed because the aldermen felt that people should buy from Michelini who does much work for the city and is located north on the Plank Road. End of story. I agree with you it would have been a great start to a community project. Most people that I know go to LaSalle which is the closest market. If Peru could start one, I suppose that would now be considered a community festival and if the ordinance supported by Ald. Ankiewicz passes, the Recreation commission would be forced into handling it. Nonsense doesn't ever seem to stop.

From wisegeek.com

Some people believe that in a representative democracy, it would be ideal for the elected officials to be highly educated people who understand the needs of the people and can come up with solutions to complicated social and governmental problems. In many cases, however, representatives are often based on shared beliefs and opinions with certain segments of the populace, regardless of those representatives' education, knowledge or ability to solve problems. This is seen by some people as a weakness of representative democracy, in that the representatives might serve their own needs and preferences over those of the people. Proponents of representative democracy often point to the fact that the citizens choose the representatives by direct elections, so they ultimately help decide what will be made into law.

The exact reason we don't have a farmers market and why boggios wasn't allowed to put a store in the old Marathon station by the eagles lodge is because of michellini. Boggio was going to move to the old gas station and convert it to a farmers market but michellini had the city screw him over so they gave up. Why would Peru go against one of the favorites. Crooked politics. That's why ever town around us has a farmers market for their citizens and why Peru citizens have to go outside of town to find a farmers market. Same reason michellini pays nothing for the farm land he rapes from the city.

There also is an alderman with a deli who probably doesn't want a Farmers Market---(unless he can buy cheap enough and resell like he does at Aldi's.

Just recently we were watching some reruns of WKRP Cincinnati on Tv. During one of the episodes, this comment was used. You don't find out about the rotten seam of local government until you get knee deep in it. Whoever put that in the script sure knew what they were talking about.

I bought corn on Plank Road the day they opened. The corn went in the garbage it was so old. Fool me once. Yesterday I was in Hegeler Park, shopping with my fellow citizens of Peru. Thanks LaSalle.

To become a active and involved city government every month that the electric bill is sent out there should be a survey subject included to find out the wants of the citizen.
Surveys on subjects such as committee terms, term limitations, fireworks, construction of a splash pad and Peru having a Farmers Market would be a good guideline to for creating family activities and political interests.

I also had corn from the Plank Road and threw it out. No more thank you.

Lois,

Is their any specific procedure that must be followed in Citizen video taping the meetings? As I understand it , the OMA specifically allows any citizen to record, but also specifies the governmental entity can establish some reasonable procedure. I might guess that would be insuring the recording was minimally intrusive and all parties were aware that it was occurring.
I would guess with all the interest in the you tube post regarding the intersection, posting video highlights of the meetings might also shine a revealing light for citizens and external media to review.

Great idea 6:48! What a highlight reel that would make. Might be as good as the video of the intersection. Lois your ideas for this blog get better every day. Keep up the good work.

Since the City building now offers free wifi I am certain the feed could be streamlined live-just not certain how to do that!

Streaming the meetings would still not eliminate a private citizens right to personally record them. This has already been established. There are many reasons to do this. Live feeds can be broken and or controlled by the very individuals you are trying to record. A simple smartphone recording of key debates and exchanges is still an excellent idea, particularly for doing a pre election video handout for citizens or for future legal challenges. Otherwise you need to capture the live feed and edit. It is cumbersome.
Since the city apparently has no procedures specified. I would think you can turn on your iPhone or iPad whenever something interesting starts up in any public meeting. You can confirm this by contacting the AG office directly for an opinion.
