Do You Like This New Design?

Peru is changing traffic rules at 38th Street and Venture Drive to ease congestion at the intersection.

The changes are scheduled to take effect Monday and will pose a learning curve for drivers, Mayor Scott Harl said.

Jim Clinard of Chamlin & Associates, engineering consultant for the city, explained the changes and provided a diagram.

There will no longer be a stop sign at Venture Drive for westbound traffic on 38th Street coming from Route 251. This traffic can turn left, go straight or turn right without stopping.

Traffic from the south and from the north on Venture Drive still will have stop signs but motorists can only turn right. This will direct southbound traffic west to Peoria Street, and northbound traffic east to Route 251.

Eastbound traffic on 38th Street still will have to stop, and can turn right or go straight but can no longer turn left onto Venture Drive.

The city also will change Peoria Street intersections with Wenzel Road and with 38th Street to three-way stops. by Jeff Dankert News Tribune

I expect to see lots more traffic in the mall parking lot and probably more fender benders too.

I think I'll try to stay away from there for a while. Didn't they try making a change once before and it created havoc and was changed back to its' original way?

Chamlin Engineering-----DUH. This is not going to work, GUARANTEED.

Is Chamlin going to reimburse Dairy Queen for customers lost? It won't be very nice having to go West to Peoria street when a person wants to go East to 251. This will also hinder Steak & Shake and Home Depot. Get your checkbook out Roger & Friends!

Those of us who live in Ward 1 might find in more convenient to take Shooting Park east to St Vincents and turn left and there is an ice cream stand.

well you can bet for sure there will be accidents, and there will for sure be lost money, you think someone traveling on rte 80 is going to know where to go or what to to when they turn there to use any one of those restaurants and go to leave and "cant get back" another wonderful design by chamlin, here is an idea STOP HAVING CHAMLIN TRY TO FIX THINGS THEY SCREWED UP TO BEGIN WITH....FIRE 'EM and get someone who knows whats going on....wonder how long before the pot holes in the mall lot are big enough for two elephants to mate in like the city streets from everyone using them as a way to get out and or around this freaking mess. talk about a rat race geez

Whatever happened to Steve. I'm sure he would have a snappy answer. Probably just say its Baker's fault and leave it at that.

IF OUR BELOVED REVEREND MAYOR HAD A BACKBONE AND DID WHAT HE PROMISED TO DO WHEN CAMPAIGNING, CHAMLIN WOULD BE GONE!!! THIS ROAD DESIGN IS IDIOTIC AND I LOOK FOR MANAGERS OF THE BUSINESSES UP THERE TO PAY A VISIT TO CITY HALL AND TO RAISE HELL AT A MEETING.

Anonymous said...

Don't know how this will work out, but kudos to all for the repaving and striping some roads. Hope all that complained about those signs, can eat their words now. Good job.

Another colossally stupid proposal for this intersection. Most of those businesses decided to locate there because of ease of access to and from I-80. Well, not anymore. Any visitor to this area from I-80 will quickly become confused then angry. How many will pledge to never return?

I think Steve is keeping quiet and hoping people forget that he was Harl's campaign manager second time around. He probably will then try to run for office again. That will be forgotten about as fast as Harl thinking he should be able to marry people.

Why is Peru so averse to traffic lights? I remember back during the infrastructure tax debates that he Mayor said that some of the money would be used for traffic controls - both at this area and at the intersection of Peoria and Shooting Park road.
Four Way stops do not work in Peru - especially when half the town wants to wave the other half through the intersection.

What can't a small right lane only exit be put on the southbound 51 somewhere before the restaurants. The larger mall towns have single exits all over the place to divert traffic from the main exits. Similiar to what is in front of Kohls and Walmart?

This doesn't even pertain to this post but what the heck is with these electric bills mine has doubled in the last month!!! I can't afford this!!!

Anonymous said...

2:29 - Your bill is higher because it is hot and you, along with everyone else, are using more electricity.

Cecil said...

Hey 2:29...not only your electric bill but, if you watered your lawn, your water bill will be higher and surprise, surprise your sewer bill will be higher also even if one drop of that lawn water didn't ever reach the sewer.

Speaking of bills, how about the "landfill" in addition to garbage that we are still paying that was only supposed to be on there for a while and that dates back to oh geez....couldnt even tell you how long baker was still there when it was added

My "purchased power" doubled!!!! I live in an apartment and my bill is $200 this is just crazy!!!

JUST WENT TO FIRST STATE BANK WHAT A CLUSTER ITS GONNA BE UP THERE CARS ARE ALREADY TURNING AROUND IN THE BANK PARKING LOT TO GET BACK TO 251

I was just up there. There were people and machinery all over and the marks were not completely done on the road. I thought it was supposed to be ready to go this morning? The stop sign that was supposed to be eliminated was still up.

Just another excellent reason to get rid of Chamlin and everyone associated. WHAT AN IDIOT!!

Dom't worry peru citizens , the mayor and council will take care of everything .
In another story its funny how fast the medical building came down and metel and wood separated with no problems what so ever for new general dollar in lasalle 1 maybe peru should learn from lasalle and the old power plant wood be gone ! YA THINK ?

That mess up there at that intersection is awful. I was just up there and I was coming from Dairy Queen. I was forced to turn right. I followed a pickup truck through the construction. The man driving the pickup truck started screaming at the construction worker about how "this new intersection design is so stupid!" the construction worker replied: "sorry sir, but I am just doing what im told."

I then proceeded to follow the pickup truck into the bank parking lot to turn around. Meanwhile one of the workers came out to yell at us. He could only catch words with me and threatened to detain me and call the police. I just kept going on my way. Looking behind me the bank worker was then going after other automobiles trying to turn around in the bank parking lot.

I believe the PPD has been called to help with traffic control.

Wanted to go to Dairy Queen tonight. I came off of 251 anf had no trouble getting in to Dairy Queen. Coming out was a different story. I hope I'm never short on gas when I go there. It has you going in so many circles, I felt like I was in a maze trying to get back to 251. At least there are cones and wide markers directing you. I can't wait until Christmas and people from out of town come and see this intersection. Better keep a lot of salt so you can see the arrows.

Is Chamlin going to get paid for this? Who were the goofs in City Hall that gave the OK to this fiasco?

Anonymous said...

Of course Chamlin will get paid for this. I don't know whose idea it was but it was mentioned on the radio that the mayor, alderman Lukosis, Mr. Bleck, and Clinard met with IDOT. All I know is that the video above is hilarious. Great work whoever made it.

Seems like a total deathtrap. Chamlin!!!!

If you don't turn around in a parking lot or do a U turn, how do you get back to 251?

Mike said...

It appears there is enough area at this intersection for a roundabout.New ones are appearing in Illinois and Wisconsin. This alleviates all stoppage and traffic will continually move. Most roundabouts have an inside lane and an outside lane. Roundabouts were discussed at the infrastructure meetings. But no further action was taken

Anonymous said...

What a joke. Thank God the city doesn’t actually pay people to come up with ideas like this. I for one, will no longer try to navigate this maize. There are plenty of businesses East of 251, and close by that will welcome my business 4 –5 times a week. A really intelligent move Peru......................

Anonymous said...

Mike, Your statement "This was discussed....... But no further action was taken." is the present day city motto.

Anonymous said...

9:24 What do you mean "the city doesn't pay" for these ideas? I would guess they paid big time.

Anonymous said...

You can bet that Chamlin got paid AGAIN FOR BEING WRONG!!!! WAKE UP PERU TAXPAYERS AND MAKE A STAND AGAINST SUCH STUPIDITY. I SUGGEST THAT NO ONE LISTEN TO THE EXCUSE THAT WILL BE GIVEN ABOUT IDOT GIVING THE OK ON THIS MISTAKE AND DEMAND IT PUT BACK LIKE BEFORE UNTIL A REAL SOLUTION IS DEVELOPED. IT'S YOUR TOWN AND YOUR MONEY---SPEAK UP! NO ONE AT CITY HALL KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

Personally, I feel like the new intersection is a mess. People are still doing whatever they want. If the city wanted to take measures to change the intersection, they should have had law officials enforcing it. What a mess it has turned into.
