When Will Peru Have This Event?

News Tribune Allison Ryan Staff Writer Share With Friend Spring Valley volunteers are preparing an evening of games, swimming, free food and safety awareness when the 19th annual National Night Out returns on Tuesday to Kirby Park. “We just like the community to come out and enjoy the evening,” said Spring Valley police chief Kevin Sangston. “This is an event that we hold every year to bring awareness to crime prevention and drug awareness programs, and it’s a very family-friendly event with lots of give-aways and activities for kids to do,” Sangston said. The schedule of events is as follows: * Free swim: 5-7 p.m. at Edward P. Coveny Pool * Hot dogs, chips, treats and drinks served following swimming * K9 Team Demonstration 7 p.m. at the baseball diamond * Throughout the evening: Spring Valley Fire Department and 10/33 Ambulance, Illinois State Police and Crimestoppers will be present. La Salle Fire Department will bring the “smoke house” for children to learn how to safely respond during a house fire. * Child safety seat checks will be offered. * There also will be a bounce house and a “Shine a Light on Crime” glowstick walk at about 7:45 p.m. Organizers ask those who are unable to attend to show their support by leaving porch lights glowing on Tuesday evening. For more information, contact Project Success at (815) 663-2085.

This event was proposed by Rodney but he was given the cold shoulder like usual when he tries to bring events or help the community be safe and help our kids.

We in Peru would rather worship a statue of someone that noone knows who or what she did to be so "famous" . Peru is a joke and noone wants any events or festivals or farmers markets.

I wholeheartedly agree with both of your statements. Also it is very sad to see that year after year it is the same stuff over and over again. Bringing crime and drug prevention to the forefront is a great opportunity to bring community together.

Maud Powell was the most famous violinist of her time. 5:46, you might know the violin as a fiddle...

Free swim from 5-7 p.m. I think we need a pool for that to happen!

7:05 PM You are right on the swim but we could do everything else.

I know about Maud Powell but she is probably not important to most. We have an immense and impressive statue in Rotary Park that no one celebrates at any time. Standing in the shadow of that figure is awe inspiring. Now that I consider the shame of Peru, to not find someway to celebrate the civil war soldier. Most people might not realize it is there.

Bet you can't find 50 people in Peru who heard of Maud Powell and really care. All that does is take up some useable parking spaces on 4th atreet.

Doesn't the Peru CSO hold a huge picnic out at St. Bede every fall? Wait!!!. Isn't that held in Spring Valley limits? Wait!!!!! That's not a family event. Wait!!! It's not even for couples to attend, it's an "ALL Men's" drinking and gambling festival. What a Joke! I asked my father who has been a member since 1970s about the CSO. He said there are over 700 members but yet they were recruiting volunteers to work the 4th beer garden. I know because I was asked. They did have female bartenders but yet we are forbidden to attend their picnic nor join the organization. My Dad said this is a Baker organization. This city is still ran by the Baker regime and the CSO.
What has the CSO done for Peru lately besides purchase flags and a few Xmas decorations? I could go on line and purchase 500 flags for 200.00
Wake Up Peru!!!! Let's start a new and energetic volunteer organization open to all genders.

Didn't the City of Peru just have a fun fair with free hot dogs, games and activities? In the name of the pool or anti-drugs, its still a similiar event. Bringing crime and drug use to the forefront is a everyday task. Maud Powell is Peru heritage and a celebration of arts is much different than free dogs.

The CSO is an organization that was founded about the same time as Liberty Fire. Their sole purpose then and now is a men's club for drinking and gambling. NO WOMAN ALLOWED! !

CSO has been around for much longer than the Baker era. If you can purchase 5oo flags or put up XMAS decorations than why don't you. The community always needs good organizations and good people to volunteer. Start a new club, get involved. Its those who sit on the sidelines and then there are those who get out of bed in below zero temperature to put up decorations or pick up a roadway or fundraise for Peru. Do you remember those big centennial celebrations? Those are funded by the CSO! Its a Peru organization, tell your dad! Most of us are tired of the constant "inactive vocal minority" critics who stand around and expect everybody else to pay the bills, do the work. Its time to say thank you to those volunteers that work for the benefit of the city.

Both organizations are open to female volunteers. Anon 10:37 both organizations have members that don't drink or gamble. If you join Liberty we can only hope that you have a interest in helping the fire department. If you join the CSO we hope that you have the idea of helping Peru.

That is the first I have ever heard of females being a part of either. I did notice you used the word of "volunteers" and not "members". What would you consider the difference and who should women contact if interesting in either organization.

10:40 women are forced to sit on the sidelines when it comes to the CSO unless of course they are desperate for help as they were for bartenders. You are correct the CSO was established before the 70s and the mentality of the organization that women belong barefoot and pregnant making dinner. Not all of the men in the group are like this, nor is my father but many were and still are. The CSO needs to break away from that old mentality of discriminating against women. The day they do will be the day I'm the first to join. My dad always use to laugh when we would watch the little rascalls. The boys would never let the girls into their meetings. My dad always said they were the Little CSO Rascalls" I remember that since I was 10 years old. I even use to ask my dad to go with to hang XMas decorations, he'd say " no girls allowed" I'm sure glad my father grew out of that.
As far as other activities they put on at the parks are nice but the City of Peru needs more events like Utica and Ottawa has, that's where the energy of an organization like this needs to go, with the help of women. So please let the community know if women are now allowed to join.

I have been beating that drum since I started writing this blog and have gotten nowhere. It is time for the younger men in that organization to step forward and open it up to all citizens equally. I'm also betting that cities around us laugh at this long continued "men only" tradition. They grew out of that mentality and have wonderful celebrations developed by both women and men.

Peru would probably never have even given women the right to vote. The "bring me my slippers" mentality still continues, I have seen it.

Peru Township in the news again!

The Peru Township either needs to go, or the administration needs to go! The Peru citizen that originally called this out a couple months ago needs to run for that commissioner seat and turn it around. That article in today's paper made me SICK!! Typical Peru corruption. Can anyone recall who the citizens were that called them out in that last investigation? I will endorse them to run.

Wow! Liberty/Peru Fire Department. No more
Stag (was men only)!!! Held at the fire department for
years. Was gambling legal there? Did our elected government officials attend? Didn't hundreds attend? Also, are women allowed to become fireman Un Peru? Have any ever applied? If so, were they declined? If so why and by who??? Food for thought.

And tonight Ottawa, Streator and Marseilles will also celebrate the National Night Out. Just because we don't have a pool is no reason for the city not to get its act together and act like a community.

9:39 I found it. Matt Mc Laughlen called them out according to the News Trib a few months ago. I say we search him out and if he can do a better job then let's back him!

Only put Mclaughlin in if everyone else gets replaced! !
Just like Peru needs to do with the council! !
