How much longer does the city need to study the intersection of 38th Street and Venture Drive? The current solution is pathetic.
Now there are huge signs placed at First Federal trying to deter people from turning around on the property and not to u-turn. That is very unattractive and uninviting to patrons! Did anyone else notice the small green sign north of Target across from the entrance to Jalapenos? It points west and reads to U.S. 251. Why would the city make it difficult to shop this area? What do you plan to do on Black Friday? Is the city planning on keeping officers out there all day? That would be a wise use of payroll. Has the city looked into closing the road between the two banks and creating an entrance off 251 resembling the one by Olive Garden and Kohl’s? That would prompt people to use the south (36th Street) and west entrance/exits at the mall. Please don’t tell the citizens there isn’t money to drastically change this corner in some way. Peru has had 10-plus years to assess the situation, develop a plan, and allocate funds. Stop throwing good money after bad at these half-baked attempts to fix it. If the current idea was Chamlin and Associates best work, get a new firm! Denise Scolari, Peru

Last night I noticed a new sign on the berm of Hobby Lobby Lot.
Don't Turn Around Here or something close to that.
What's even more pathetic is that one of our aldermen asked a business owner for proof "in writing" that his business was losing money daily because of this intersection. What did that alderman think? That the business owner was making up his losses? For what reason?
I feel so bad for DQ that I go there now more than ever, just so they will not have to close their doors. How long will they make these business owners beg! Another sad day in Peru.
Lois, I was coming South on Adventure Drive today and turned right onto 38th St. and followed a car into Hobby Lobby and we both did u-turns right in front of the sign. I took great pleasure in doing that I must admit.
I noticed another Stop sign was taken out probably by a semi that couldn't make the turn. I wonder what union sign shop is getting rich off the city?
Did an alderman really ask a business owner to show proof of their losses? What a shame if this is true. Who was the aldermen? Pothoff or Perez?

Considering there may possibly be a decent case that the decision was made illegally, in violation of the open meetings act., I would think that the alderman might be concerned that the business might decide to gather that written evidence for presentation to a judge for damages.
A city basically made a voluntary decision that harmed business without due forethought or discussion, with no "written" studies or proof there was a measured problem ( from foia requests). I know that someone thought they were helping a traffic problem. But I have never seen any reasoned discussion or written study BEFORE this change was implemented. I laugh when the paper says the most studied intersection of all time. It is like saying we can't understand why the patient died, we had hundreds of top doctors come work on the autopsy. But not a one did a diagnosis.
First off...the "No U-turn" signs are can't be enforced. There is nothing in the IL Vehicle Code or even the Peru ordinances that prohibits this.
Second...and this is only food for thought, not sure if anyone thought of this or even if it would help..how about turning Venture Drive into a one-way "loop" around the businesses? This would keep traffic flowing in one direction and really wouldn't take time away from customers exiting the businesses. They can exit back onto Venture or out the back way to Peoria (for the businesses on the West side of Venture).
Could this work? Just looking for input...can't be a worse idea than what Chamlin came up with!!
10:15. It was alderman radtke
DON'T PATRONIZE DQ AND OTHER BUSINESSES UP THERE OR YOUR DOING WHAT THESE IDIOT'S WANT. LET THE BUSINESSES COMPLAIN AND THE CITY WILL HAVE TO PUT THINGS BACK THE WAY IT WAS OR CHANGE THE PRESENT MESS.
This was only one of the two open forums this week regarding that intersection. Will the city continue to ignore the problem? Mayor Baker changed that intersection years ago then put it back because of the added problems. I take it Mayor Scott the King Harl is to stubborn and arrogant to admit he made a mistake and to fix it? I wonder if a Union business was located up there and complaining i'm sure it would be changed. We need a city that will listen to the citizens of Peru instead of their own special interest groups. Harl is the poster child to political campaign lies.
Hurry Up Alderman Rodney Perez and get these council meetings recorded so we can let the citizens of Peru see the real city ignorance before the next election.
10:15 It was neither.
I believe Radtke requested that the business owner presenting at the council meeting show proof of lost revenue, not Perez or Pothoff. While I can appreciate Mike's need for appropriate accounting paperwork, I believe it takes a mere thirty-second observation of the intersection to appreciate the negative financial impact this is having on businesses, especially DQ. Were I DQ, I'd put up my own signs facing 251, advertising a great blizzard special too delicious to refuse, and I'd see what happens as traffic backs up to I80. Maybe they could even market a special "Adventure" blizzard. Point is... this fiasco was unnecessary and businesses shouldn't have to worry about traffic patterns during a sluggish economy when there are so many other factors impacting revenue. Someone please step up! Admit this was a bandaid. Adopt a better solution AFTER consulting IDOT, PPD, local businesses, and the full council. Lastly, please remove the barriers and signage immediately!
Has Radtke been up there to observe the chaos? What if Alderman Waldorf had his business where DQ is located?
the few times I have been there, I always wonder how often the Mayor has been in one of the parking lots to see all the confusion and how people ignore the signs. I can only imagine what people from out of the area must think when they see the profusion of ignored signs.
Are we, the taxpayers, paying for all those ridiculous signs that keep appearing because this intersection is just not working? Instead of admitting failure and instead of supporting local businesses our administration keeps spending more money and adding more instructions. Someone needs to step up to the plate, take responsibility, erase the slate clean and start over. We all make mistakes and should learn from them. Quit wasting taxpayer money!
