This is very much of a surprise and personally I will miss the store as they stocked items no one else in the area does.
So now its Jewel and then it was 3 businesses as a result of the Westclox fire: Curves, the beauty shop and wedding store.
I see that P and P pantry is also closed on Peoria Street.
Do these closings have any significance or messages to our city?
We are getting Olive Garden which of course will not be much of a revenue producer.
Are the closings a result of poor business management or the economy?

POOR BUSINESS MANAGEMENT! I work for SuperValu since January of 2007, and I can tell you that it most certainly is poor business management. I'll give you an example. I am on the Operations Committee at Advantage Logistics, the most recent issue, which must have also been the most pressing since it was the first issue discussed, was to find an ergonomic, safe, and operationally beneficial way to take the cap off of a sharpie marker. We pulled six people out of production on a day with mandatory overtime to discuss this for 20 minutes. Trust me, I'm not typically a disgruntled employee, but there are numerous stories such as this one.

Its profits and losses. Nothing to do with anything but the local lack of support for the area Jewel. The message is clear....the economy! I bet Olive Garden will have great sales, just like the local Walmart. The problem is that we have only much money in the area and not anymore jobs. Those same dollars are dished out to the chain establishments(walamart, olive garden, etc). The local restaurants close. I would imagine that the union label of Jewel and the costs associated with had a direct result on the bottom line in the grocery area. Next time you see a picket, ask if that picket helps the local economy?

I liked to shop at Jewel to support friends that work there, but the prices were sometimes twice as high as Hyvee or Walmart. I couldn't afford to patronize the store very often. They needed to be a bit more competitive.

I argree with 1:23, their prices were out of line. If there were two items for a special price, than you had to take 2 or if you took one, the price on that one item was more than the two. If you buy two for $5.00 at Hyvee, and only wanted one you only paid $2.50. Some older people only could use one.

We all need to support our own local community if we want our businesses to survive . Just like we are suppose to "buy American" , we need to "buy Peru , or Lasalle , etc". Support your local community !

Jewel people should visit Hy-Vee to see how a business is run. More than 1 checkout etc. Hope store that replaces has more friendly people.
