How to Submit a Resume to Become Fire Chief?

I think the really important issue is the manner in which this city chooses their Fire Chief. Is there a process that is followed? My understanding is that the current chief was chosen during a party of Liberty. This has never seemed appropriate and no one has ever told me what the proper procedure is to choose this most important position. In other words what is the protocol? This is all very disturbing.

Sitting around a table all having a beer seems an inappropriate way to designate the person who will lead the fire department. Is this the way the city has always chosen their FD Chiefs? And then they just boot out the guy who is currently wearing the Chief Hat? Tell me this is not how it is done!

It is how its done. Been that way for years. The chief is not always the person with the most schooling or certs. The dept. had an election, after the secret by invite only garage meeting, and voted king in as chief and the mayor approved it. king will be chief until he quits, the mayor decides he wants someone new, or we get another mayor and then he can appoint someone else if he sees fit.

Sounds like high school student council elections. Popularity deal. How is Asst. Fire Chief chosen? ???????

No application and no resume required by mayor when he appoints positions? That wrong! Just wondering what degrees, class certifications, years in service, EMT cert., did Mr. Eccles have? And what exactly does out current fire chief have? Where is that website that use to have pictures of fireman and their information? When was that taken down? ??????

Would it be possible to put this website in the cities newsletter so that those who don't know about it become aware of it. Those newsletters are sent to the taxpayers therefore they have a right to be informed.

Anonymous said...

The web site does not have any info on it about the firemens certs or schooling. I guess they dont want anybody to know. if it was up there you would see that the officers have less certs then the firemen. I should say most.

Give a call to the city clerk and make that suggestion to him. He is the one putting it together.

Everybody has spent too much time on fire department topic. Alot of false accusations.

Anonymous said...

Why is the city clerk putting it (website) together. I had read that a firm in Spring Valley had submitted a bid that is much lower than all past or present bids and was of better quality than firms the city dealt with previously. Customer friendliness is a qualification that the Spring Valleys firm is supposed to have all others beaten hands down and that Perus website needs a considerable amount of work on. When do we get this improvement and than next maybe Peru will televise it council meetings.

And the false accusations are?

In the citys newsletter that there is a town forum blog regarding Issues and concerns. Not singling out the fire department. In agreement as far as a website for our fire department. Our future firefighters might like to surf it after fire safety week at school. It can be looked at as a teaching tool.

Nicely stated Lois, I assume the blogger will not respond to "false allegations.". They are more than welcome to respond and we would like to read. Anyone who thinks that the fd is being torn apart on blogs and the fd is the only one being torn apart evidently doesn't read the other posts regarding other departments. It's concerns, questions, and issues!!!!!!! From tax abiding citizens in Peru.

City Hall is not controlling webpage I do believe a firefighter set it up and monitors it.Peru Fire Department is NOT a brotherhood of firefighters, they are a brotherhood of Boozers.Go to Elles tap some meeting night or a Friday for their Happy Hour aka- safety meeting. I haven't been to Elles in about 4 months since I started my new job but you could always count on the chief and about 7-10 other peru FF having their so called "safety meeting" I always thought what they would do if a fire happened then what? Their Chief of Peru has the core of that departments FF as his buddies. "FACT"

Nothing is illegal about having a few cocktails. There have been fire calls I would assume during these happy hours and then what?? There you have it, the fire chief leading by example. Also what an example to set forth with the fire department funding a majority of cost for operation promise(drinking and driving). Get a firefighter license plate and you might not get pulled over. Chief King will run this department as he sees fit and no one is going to tell him any differently! King should be just a fireman not a fire chief. What examples is he setting?

Maybe these hours at Elle's are part of chief kings 30-40 hours where he states doors are wide open.

Interesting blogs in regards this title blog section. Nobody answered or debated about the process of hiring
our fire chief. To just appoint the position and not do research on credentials. ??????etc....???!! In yesterday's news tribune there was a picture of fire
Chief King and another fireman at the scene of an auto accident. I believe in the picture in the back were two command vehicles. Why two at 10 a.m.???? These also personal vehicles on taxpayers dime. Chief King drives one, who drove other one to this call!????

I surf all these blogs and my question is that nothing has been blogged into questions that were asked in regards to Asst. Chief Duncan's neck brace/injury, and being at fire calls, being paid(?), driving a command vehicle(?). Insurance liability(?)! What protocol was done with this? Another issue swept under a rug??! Behind closed door meetings in regards to this? Was this issue discussed at a city council meeting???? No answers!! Who is really in
Charge???

Peru Town Forum said...

the pictures I saw of the FD at the accident at Wenzel and Marquette yesterday did not show a neck brace any longer on the asst fire chief.

Anonymous said...

Lois, I believe the fire chief was in picture. Not Asst. Chief Duncan(neck brace fireman) in picture.

His fire suit had assistant chief Duncan on it, I think it was the asst.

Mayor Harl appointed Jeff King as Peru's Fire Chief/Fire Marshall. How can he have title of Fire Marshall? If I stand correct that "Fire Marshall's" are under state jurisdictions and must have a MASTER'S DEGREE in Fire Science.it's also my understanding our fire chief doesn't have any degrees. Also, In Martinsville, Illinois they have a volunteer fire department (approx. 70 members, $35 paid per call, after 2 hours on a fire call, an additional $$12-$15 per hour). Their fire Chief and Asst. Chief don't get paid additional salary for their positions. This was interesting information that one of their fireman told me. Also. a requirement to be a volunteer fireman is certification as a EMT.

A few months ago on a blog, some blogger did blog something about Fire Marshall. How can the city of Peru have a position as "Fire Marshall," not accredited by the state? Lois, can this be investigated? Very interesting.

Anonymous said...

If those are truths, it's very interesting. One would think that any Mayor in any City would know if a person can have the title of fire Marshall . ?????? If so, with what qualifications?

Anonymous said...

Its my understanding that Peru's fire chief is also fire marshall in our city. And each titled positions gets a yearly salary from the city(we taxpayers). What job description does fire marshall have/does? I've seen a white car in the areas of Peru and lasalle that's has a logo on it that's says "state fire Marshall.". I said white car, not the famous white truck that was purchased by the city for the fire department.

Anonymous said...

Rodney: Can a person legally have a position as Fire Marshall without the qualifications for that title. What's the status of this. Can anybody who is a fireman in Peru be also a fire Marshall? OSFM (office state fire Marshall)(?) website.???????????????????????

Anonymous said...

It's very apparent that many taxpayers direct their questions to alderman Perez, because he may answer. Alderman Ferrari should have knowledge on All questions ask in regards to fire/safety and be able to answer. Isn't he on that committee? So, maybe he should step up to the plate and swing the bat with answers. Just a thought.

Anonymous said...

Could the ordinance be posted for "Fire Marshall?". For peru's fire marshall. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

The Fire Chief can be appointed "from any rank within the fire department.". So an 18 year old could be appointed fire chief. Who on this earth wrote that ordinance? Did city council approve that ordinance? Amazing how that ordinance was passed with not too many guidelines as to who is fire chief. Referring to the above posted blog. Definitely seems like a popularity appointed position in Peru. Of course: my opinion.

I have read this blog several times and do find it necessary to blog my opinion. Some questions of bloggers are very legimate. And i'm wondering why nobody, Alderman Perez for one has not responded as he often does to questions. The question I would like to have an answer to is the FIRE MARSHALL questions. Is it really that difficult for it to be answers in a manner that would be facts?? Many times as we all are aware of when questions are unanswered a red flag goes up.
