Looks like the Mayor has turned his back on his commitment to citizen participation in a big way. ScottHarlpic

Local 150 Members Wins Mayoral Race In Peru Illinois

The 44-year reign of Peru Mayor Don Baker has ended because of what he called "dirty politics" and the first term of challenger Scott Harl is about to begin on his campaign message that "it's time for a change."

Voters decidedly tossed out Baker. He earned 39 percent to Harl's 45 percent and challenger Dave Potthoff's 16 percent. Voter turnout was 51.4 percent.

By 7:15 p.m. the Harl and Baker camps had learned the results by checking posted printouts at precincts. Harl stepped outside of the noisy Eagles Club, where his victory party was in full swing, to speak with the NewsTribune.

"It's very fulfilling to see the hard work that we've done in this campaign has paid off," Harl said. "I truly believe it was not because of me. It's because they wanted it and they felt they needed it. Let's face it. No one would have worked this hard for one single person. I just want to let the city of Peru know that if I'm not living up to their expectations - theirs and

mine - to please let me know. I will strive for citizen participation."

Harl said he respects the legacy of Baker.

How quickly they forget who worked so hard to get them in office and the promises they made. And, I thought Harl won the election not the UNION. Something smells fishy in Peru. Citizen participation? He does all he can to discourage it.

Bye bye Hurl !!
You're nothing but a liar along with your select aldermen. We put you in and were sick if your lies so now were gonna replace you and take a chance on the next guy.

Lois, where was this story printed? In our local newspaper? If it was I do not remember Mayor Baker being "tossed" out of office as part of the story.

2:54 PM Lois --- Just shows what it was all about!! UNION - UNION - UNION!!! He lied to ALL of us who supported him. He cried when he got elected and he will cry when he looses the election!

From this you can see who "Hurl" really works for. He never did have the interests of the people up front - only the Unions. And not the rank and file memebers... he works for the Union Leadership that gets paid six figure salaries.

8:09 You are exactly right. He wasn't for the working man -- Just the BIGSHOTS.

All I have to say is WOW! If the citizens of Peru elect the current mayor to another term we all need our heads examined. I am appalled at this article in the unions newsletter ....Local 150 members win mayoral race! I was duped, but it will not happen to me this year, and I hope that is the sentiments of the majority in Peru.

Local 150 members are our mayor??? Is that why he just sits back at council and committee meetings and says nothing?? Is the union telling him what to do?? I will not make the same mistake twice by voting for him again!! I too was duped!!
