Do You Play Horseshoes?

Anybody remember an area at Centennial Park where residents could play horseshoes? The Mayor is interested.

There is an area located at the north end of the park. Located north of the far north shelter. The pits are in bad shape. Approximately 5 sets of pits.

Time to get out the boots. Horse Crap getting deeper now.
Will this be next to the Ice Skating Rink or PickleBall Court.
Harl needs to finish a project before he starts another. Joke!!!!

How about some interest in a pool for our families and children? Ive never seen families play horseshoes for an outing, usually played at picnics or on a beach. Would the city be able to handle maintenance for horseshoes? Look at the shape the parks have been in the past. I put horseshoes with drinking alcohol in my 50 years on earth. Wonder if this will be like the pickleball deal. Only for a select or elite group of people?

Wasn't he showing interest not for Peru citizens but for people from Tonica?

Peru Town Forum said...

Yes you are right, it was not for the Peru residents, some people in Tonica are looking for a horseshoe pit. La Salle already has an active horseshoe group, I believe. I wonder if it was lack of interest in Peru that caused out pits to be abandoned.

It was briefly mentioned in a discussion between Ald. Potthoff and Treasurer Hylla that the Moody downgrading of Illinois and consequently bond holder Assured Guaranty will have the effect of costing Peru more money. BE sure to watch the video when it is put on the city site.
This has something to do with the Illinois Economic Recovery Bonds which we took out for some project.
Those of you who have a better understanding than I do of bonds will probably have a better understanding than I do. Hylla also mentioned EMMA which I would understand as Electronic Municipal Market Access.

It wasn't lack of interest! There were leagues that played there all the time. They kept up the pits and not Peru! Maybe peru should take care of them if they're going to redo them this time. But most of all why do we do things on request from other towns citizens? We don't do what our citizens want!!

Anon 8:26AM and 11:10AM Each of your comments have aroused interest. Personally I believe this horseshoe idea should be turned over to a Recreation Director. I elected a Mayor to handle major subjects such as hiring a city engineer, hiring a SPW's with a background in justification of the pay for the job, a proposal of employing a city manager.
Peru is in need of going out of town to bring in fresh ideas rather than hiring within. It is also in grave need of electing new city officials who are willing to do this.
After 175 years a fresh look would not hurt.

Pool!!!! How much money is in the pool fund? That just proves the majority of people are not interested in a money pit pool. Use some common sense and forget that stupid idea until the city has about $6,000,000 dollars to throw away! When it comes to horseshoes, it is just an angle for votes.

You would think the mayor would have more important issues to deal with, other than horse shoes..really? But then again it is who wants it and it is an election year.

Anonymous said...

You have got to be kidding me! Horse shoes now! Who is asking the mayor to install these? Lois, was this really discussed at the meeting last night?

Anonymous said...

Horseshoes, a k a "Barnyard Golf" will need an Ambassador within walking distance who can reserve the pits and keep the equipment. Then we'll need to erect a fence around the pits and lock the gate so it becomes a private playground. I think the playground equipment should be removed and the pits installed where they'll get the most visibility from the people at Liberty Village. We'll also need a video showing horseshoes can be played anywhere (that's not insulting to the Ambassador's ego) and a bicycle billboard on West Street announcing the facility. After that's done, I still ain't votin' for Harl. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Anonymous said...

Yes it was discussed. The idea is to bring in more people to Peru to spend money and shop, etc...

Anonymous said...

Yes 12:34 it was really discussed at last night's meeting and the mayor did say people from Tonica requested it. He also asked alderman Ankiewicz to bring the discussion to the next rec board meeting. Wonder why the ice skating rink wasn't turned over to the rec board? They knew nothing about how it came to be. Pretty sure the mayor made that decision on his own and that we paid for it from the general fund.

Who in their right mind is going to come to Peru to play horseshoes with the idea of shopping? Alcohol sales to fill their coolers maybe. But, the players probably have their coolers filled with ice cold drinks immediately available upon arrival to Peru. This idea of updates horseshoe pits is laughable. Update the parks that are already in existence now! Beautify them. Here's a brainstorm, new pits at Baker Lake. How well would that go over? LOL.

Peru Town Forum said...

Your comment on the alcohol was right up front and was what I thought when I thought about a bunch of guys playing horseshoes. Now wait, there must be some gals who would like to play too. Maybe they would like to shop afterward.

Anonymous said...

This horseshoe discussion may have been brought to the forefront purposely so that the real issues at hand might be put on the backburner with the upcoming election. Being how much time and effort spent on pickleball. Peru needs new faces and ideas .

Perhaps it should have been sent to the Recreation Board before being brought up at council. Keep the important stuff out of residents knowledge, maybe?

Lois, I'm a female, also known as a gal (thank you), I've played horseshoes possibly 15 times in my lifetime so far (age 52). Honestly, my playing period was at family picnics, picnics and parties out in the county, and on beaches on rivers and beaches on lakes. And to be honest I drink alcohol (preferably beer). And the consumption of alcohol was more important than playing horseshoes. This city needs activities geared more for our children than for the adults. If people want to play horseshoes, all the have to do is get a tape measure and put the two stakes in their yard.

Anonymous said...

This ranks right up there with his wanting to marry people. OMG what is going on with this mayor. And it was not requested by anyone from Peru! Sounds like the playground equipment going to Dalzell deal....it's who ya know.

Anonymous said...

Sure another adult game, that the kids will not want to play. Just like pickleball!

Anonymous said...

Put the horse shoe pits right next to the pickle ball courts, where the volleyball court used to be.

Anonymous said...

11:10 Oh yes we do, do what people in Peru want. You just have to be the right people to ask, then you shall receive.

Anonymous said...

Do we have a director of recreation?

Anonymous said...

Only play horseshoes once in a while when there is a blue moon. Meaning haven't played in 20+ years

Anonymous said...

People who were horseshoe players are more into playing Bags(kinda like ski ball at chuckie cheese), only throw little bags with beads into holes.

Anonymous said...

What does Peru offer for our taxpaying seniors, who can't play or don't know what pickleball is? Shuffleball court would be more accommodating than horseshoes.

DE-TOX -- ANYONE????

Anonymous said...

I would consider this idea If in some way it could be shown to attract more deer to the area.

If you build they will come A of DS

Anonymous said...

Who wants to go ice skating this weekend??

Anonymous said...

Hurl just keeps getting dumber and dumber!!

Anonymous said...

Why, did the Wells Fargo Wagon arrive?

Anonymous said...

No ice skating this weekend but deer spotting is a possibility. I wonder if Alderman Ferrari is going to go coyote hunting? Now, that's a new idea!

We do not have a recreation director which is part of the reason nothing remotely resembling Recreation in Peru becomes an activity. We only have the Recreation Board and from what I have observed they are not very innovative when it comes to introducing much to the community on their own. I will add beside Pickleball and that became much to big of an issue.

The very organized sports of baseball or Little League and maybe even soccer is well done.

Lois, what happened to the respectful part you talk mention on the opening page of the blog?? As I am referring to 8:44 comment. I guess if it suits your personal agenda forget about respect. I'm guessing that the blogger who posted that might have some issues of their own. They will probably be in trouble when their mother finds out what they have been doing on the computer!!

10:35. No different than saying "less intelligent, less intelligent.". Nothing wrong with that blog. There was no offensive language. Freedom of speech. Your opinion may be different than anothers opinion on what's appropriate. Agree to disagree.

The blogger probably saw the movie Dumber and Dumber. Very funny movie by the way. On sale at Wal-mart.

Our mayor is on a role! Think of all the revenue our town will get from horseshoe playing. We'll have funds In no time for a new pool!!
What's next, soapbox derby races down brewery hill??

Anonymous said...

@12:43 you're on to something, are you on the economic growth committee? Peoria has a brewery on the riverfront in Peoria. Peoria also has a wonderful splash pad for kids to play and cool off also on the riverfront. Peru could put a brewery on waterstreet where plans are to put a park! Put some public docks so people can dock their boat and see
Peru's BEAUTIFUL WATERSTREET. Soapbox derby competitions can be the main attraction too. Just kidding, but laughing at the thought.

Mike Harl has my vote!!!!

IS MAYOR HARL REFERRING TO PLAYING HORSESHOES ON A HORSESHOE SLOT MACHINE? YES. I HAVE PLAYED THAT SLOT MACHINE IN VEGAS, ON MY LAPTOP, ON MU OUTDATED KINDLE. AND LASTLY ON MY CELL PHONE ON THE INTERNET. SO. I'M PROUD TO SAY I DO PLAY HORSESHOES. TO ANYBODY WHO LIKES PLAYING HORSESHOES THE HORSE SHOE CASINO HAS THE GAME TO PLAY.

Mike Hart 4:34 With a T. Very important to distinguish the two, very important!

Anonymous said...

Lois, you are wrong as usual on the comment from treasurer hylla, watch the video.....

Anonymous said...

Be sure to look close at the ballot when you vote and know the position of your candidate. HART is first on the ballot and harl is second.

Anonymous said...

6:13 Lois is not usually wrong, from fact checking in the past. If she is wrong this time I need to celebrate the fact that someone with opposing views FINALLY posted an accurate rebuttal! I have been waiting so long to see that.

Maybe you would be kind enough to tell us what was wrong about her statement.

Scott Hart is not on the ballot but I bet you already knew that.

Seems like 8:29 pm is a desperate harl supporter.

How about yard darts!!! Kinda like ring toss! Was horseshoes brought up to take the heat off the real issues with the upcoming elections? Parks need to be kept up first! Forget horseshoe pits.

Anonymous said...

Who's in charge of the parks? I thought they were under the jurisdiction of the park and rec board but I don't see any improvements made by them. Who inspects the parks and makes sure the repairs are made. I believe Mr. Hartman of the park board made a list last year of the problems that he spotted in the various parks. I believe the list this year is about the same. This tells me that no one is taking control and seeing that equipment is taken care of. Last year all the efforts seem to be directed at the pickle ball court while the children's equipment remained in desperate need of repair.

If horseshoes would become a city sponsored recreation are intentions to keep it under lock and key similar to a private country club for a few or is it going to be open to all the citizens of Peru? Why is present day Peru unsuccessfully trying to be all things to everyone - citizen and non citizen rather than taking care of its own citizens first? I will not vote for a politician who will not take care of his own first and be fair to all citizens of the city in which he is running for office. Pickle ball, fireworks, support of private venues such as the concert, dog pulls and creation of recreation which has already failed in Peru is not what I want my dime and time to be spent on. Peru needs a short and long range plan to work within and has many real issues to be visited. It would be great if the upcoming campaigns start to fill this need.

The parks are no longer for the kids, they are for the adults. Pickleball, and now horse shoes. I see a pattern here. Parks are for kids, the adults are there or should be there watching the kids, ie baseball, tennis, swings, slide, sandbox, softball, running, jumping, laughing, and just playing in general. We are turning ours into adult play lands. Let's get back to the real reason for parks in our city. The park board should not be catering to adult whims, but lately that is all they seem to care about.

11:47 - get used to it. The population is getting older and young families are getting smaller. What really needs to happen is for our Mayor to promote economic activity that attracts young families. Good jobs. Everything else will follow with time.
As for the Horseshoe pits. Why must the City do anything? If somebody is interested in using the park for their club, then they should out their shovel, buy some sand and pound in some stakes. Simple enough. Leave it up to the city and it will turn into a twenty grand job with bid lettings, over time for Chamlins, big earth moving machines for the 150 boys, and plenty of shovel holder uppers from the public works department. That is what "Hurl" really wants. Maybe even add a sign saying "This Pit brought to you by..."
