Princeton voters have spoken: 'No' to home rule - The Daily NewsTribune - LaSalle, IL

I remember when Peru instituted the home rule we have, it was voted upon when there was only a  school referendum on the ballot and not a major election like this. Princeton residents were well informed and made the decision they felt was best for them.  Interesting that Beck oil who also has a station in Peru did not seem to be in favor of Home Rule.

The success of Home Rule lies within the honesty of your local government. What is great today in a present administration may be horrible under the next administration.

Home Rule worked great under the Baker Administration, similar to Chicago under the Daily Regime. Peru is now struggling under the Harl Administration!

To 6:20 p.m. - You are half right. The current administration has established a balanced budget made possible by initiating the proper checks and balances and ethical management into the process.
Your interpretation that Home Rule worked great under the Baker administration was based on the premise that it was good only as far as you could tell. Problem was, it was a house of clay, ready to collapse at any moment.
I agree with you that Peru is struggling right now, but only in a political sense. That political situation will work itself out in the next two municipal elections.
But financially, Peru is well on its way to getting its house in order. Don't take my wpord for it, review the Treasurer's reports and look at the numbers. If you don't understand or agree with what you see just do what I do. Call Gary Hylla and ask him to explain it to you. If you don't trust Hylla call Dave Potthoff or Mike Radtke who sit on the Finance Committee and ask their opinion.
You will lose the argument every time if you choose to compare the financial ethics and integrity of the current and former administrations.

Steve, Gary Hylla was asked how the sales tax loss from the 2 major stores (Jewel and K-Mart) would affect our budget. Gary side stepped that question by saying he was more worried about the people who were long time employees. Those people would be without jobs. No direct answer was given regarding how the loss of sales tax affects the budget. Empathy is a wonderful thing but he is being paid to answer to the citizens of Peru regarding the budget. Budget figures and misdirecting answers have a lot in common - especially when it is coming from the City Budget Director.

Steve: What proper check and balance system have we initiated? I have been to several different committee meeting and finance meetings and never once have I witnessed a bill or receipt being presented and approved by the appropriate people.

Steve, do you really want to compare the previous administration which includes a Mayor of forty four years elected and than re-elected ten times to a administration in which
the Mayor has been in office three years and elected once?
What do you know or what previous experience have you had with Gary Hylla that you state "if you don't trust Hylla call Dave Potthoff or Mike Radtke who sit on the Finance Committee and ask their opinion". Whatever, intentional or unintentional, I'll take this forewarning to the bank.
