Cleaning Up Peru Thank You Ald. Ferrari & Crew

Early this morning I looked out on east 7th Street over the fill between Chambers and Monks Avenue and saw Ald. Ferrari and several young people filling bags with trash that has accumulated over the last year. If you read this blog you know I have complained about the trash and the lack of care by workers of our Street Department which is a part of the Public Works Department which is headed by Gary Bleck as SPW.

By now I believe most of the aldermen were aware of the problem area that was being ignored by the SPW. The excuse always is that we are short of workers. So we wait for children to go out and do the work of the well paid city employees. I find this unacceptable.

Thank you Tony and friends for taking this on and since the Mayor enjoys taking people to dinner on the cities dime perhaps he could find it in his heart to at least get the kids a gift certificate for a Happy Meal at McDonalds.

It is a matter of principle! My standard for what is right is more than yours evidently.

11:28 Do you think it's right to pay certain city workers darn good wages and then citizens have to volunteer to do their jobs?

Bleck is too busy sitting at home to notice that stuff !

How does someone who gets an unnecessary raise after 6 months of doing hardly anything and only "working" 4 days a week keep a job? Why would anyone pay someone to work less?

Lois, You do alot of complaining but I never see you or your group of(concerned citizens of Peru)that run this blog ever do any volunteer work to help solve some of the problems. But you complain about someone else who does. why don't I ever hear of you poeple ever doing anything but complaining how bad we have it here in Peru? I never see you guys roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty to help. I guess it's easier to complain about it.

What is your problem, I just made a point of thanking Alderman Ferrari for the work he did this past week along with his daughter. I don't call that complaining, it was a huge thank you.

Did I miss you while you were out there volunteering your time and energy cleaning up Peru? Sorry if I didn't see you. Let us know next time you get your hands dirty. By the way, I think you should wear gloves, you never know what your hands might have to pick up.

12:30 I've said it before and I'll say it again. We have highly paid personnel on our payroll whose job it is to keep our city clean. When they start fulfilling their duties maybe more citizens would volunteer. I think what people see now is a lot of wasted time and energy with regards to some of our city workers. This upsets them because it's their tax dollar paying their salaries. While Lois thanked and praised alderman Ferrari for his volunteer work technically he shouldn't have to be doing it. It's not his job description as an alderman so he went above and beyond his duties. I too thank you alderman Ferrari.

Ok Lois, normally we agree on most of our comments, but I am going to butt heads with you this time. Has anyone ever tracked how much time our water/street dept (a few select workers) spent on watermain/sewer breaks in the last year?? Are we averaging one a day yet?? I would assume that the citizens of this city prefer to drink clean water since we have so many emergencies to tend to. Now if I can assume that you are referring to the select few workers that have never gotten their hands dirty, or broke a sweat, or even permit themselves to get to work within 2 hours of their scheduled starting time, then I agree with you. Please don't generalize all street workers in your statement. We all know who the deadbeats are. And it absolutely floors me that it is allowed to continue!!

The Water Dept. was not included in my complaints about Peru being a dirty town while the employees cruise around the city in their city trucks. I do know how hard most of the water dept. has to work on our decaying infrastructure. And with not much relief in sight as money seems to be going elsewhere once again.
I can't pick out specific employees but hope that most people understand where my complaints go. Actually most of them go to the head of the department who is responsible for his employees or should be.

Lois, thank you for your fair response.

It all comes down to the superintendants and foreman for not doing their jobs . They have no clue whats going on throughout the day . Or where their employees are . Here's something to think about , how is it that this time of year before the college kids come back that 1 city worker can cut all the grass in the city but once summer is here it takes 12 kids to do his job ?

Do you believe it would help the super and the foremen to have a timeclock for the employees if they don't know where their employees are.
With one starting time and one and the same lunch period for all and one quitting time for a routine day the super and foremen would have a opportunity to update how each assignment is progressing. Of course they would also have to be present which could cause difficulties. Fact is one superintendent only works four days a week which has been approved by the Mayor.
