Peru Recreation Decision Making for Your Tax Dollars

AGENDA for Monthly Meeting, April 10, 2012, 6:30pm, City Hall, 1901 4th Street, Peru

1. Call to order by President, Bryan Hartmanl.
2. Visitors – Peru Pickleball Ambassador Representative
3. Minutes
4. Treasury Report – March and April 2012
5. Communications
6. Old Business; Padding for Soccer Goals, Black Dirt for Soccer Fields, Resurfacing Courts update.
7. Review and Approve Summer Recreation Brochure
8. Determine Wages for Summer Recreation Employees
9. View Conceptual Drawing for future Softball Field at Veteran’s Park
10. New Business
11. Next Meeting

I am beginning to have real issues with this "unelected" commission making decisions with our tax dollars. This group of individuals is now determining wages for the summer help. Is this not the responsibility of our Mayor and City Council members?????

We don't have a swimming pool and we don't have the money for a splash pad according to the Mayor but we have money to build another baseball diamond which supposedly would cost $100,000!

Lets give this responsibility back to the city council who have to be responsive to the needs of the residents of Peru. We can call them or email and express our opinions but the recreation commission is not available to the tax payers. If they are then lets have their phone numbers and/or email addresses.

I love this sense of entitlement. We MUST have a pool and splash pad. Give me a break. THOUSANDS of communities across this country do not have them and get along just fine. Swimming pools are luxury items. How about instead of fighting for a swimming pool, you fight to fix the mess of roads or sewers that we have in this town?

You misunderstand what I am trying to say. I agree that a pool is a luxury we cannot presently afford and may not be able to for many years to come.
BUT the recreation commission is planning to put in another baseball diamond for the just about the same amount of money that a Splash Pad would cost. How many baseball diamonds do we have in Peru now? How many Splash Pads do we have in Peru?
Do you now understand?
Infrastructure is very important but you have to give something back to the community as a whole also aka a Splash Pad.

Who is the Peru Pickleball Ambassador Representative and since when did this position get established?

Does the Rec Commission seriously determine wages for summer help? Aren't they on the city payroll? So we pay their wages and the rec commission determines their wages?

Are they seriously looking into adding another baseball diamond at Veteran's Park? Where will the additional spectators park their cars? Hopefully they will also added another access road to the park and another parking lot. If you've ever been out there when just the girls are playing it's totally congested and parking exists all the way to Peoria Street.

Will Pickleball be played only at 28th street park? What about those who use the tennis court frequently to play tennis. What if someone wants to take the equipment and say play at Sunset Park because they live in that area. Can they?

Anon 2:53 PM I don't know where you are coming from or where you have been but I do know that Lois has been actively involved in city politics for over 50 yrs. And, in those 50 plus yrs, although not always in agreement with her, I must say that she always has had her priorities in proper order.
If you have been as active as you express yourself to be, then you would know that she was possibly the biggest advocate in Peru of getting the infrastructure fixed first and savvy enough to want to provide our younger citizens with a splash pad until the time Peru can afford the luxury of having a pool. If you have attended city council meetings the lady standing up during public comment wanting the streets repaired and being ridiculed by those who wanted a pool first was Lois. In conclusion please reread "Peru Recreation Decision Making for Your Tax Dollars" and you will have a much better understanding of Lois' thoughts.
By the way Lois, on this one, I believe you are 110% correct.

To 3:17 Congratulations you are # 1 to begin
Then you all will ask negative questions
Then you all will answer the questions without any research
Then you all will discuss the conspiracy
Then you all will ask yourselves questions
Then you all will explain what someone meant by their comment
Then you all call city officials names
Then you all will call committee members names
Then you all will NOT offer solutions
Then you all will NOT volunteer
Then you all will NOT offer to be on a committee
Then you all will begin again, subject after subject
Then you all, “all 17 of you,” will feel soooo gooood

Anon 3:17 Good thinking and good questions. Also who established the pickleball ambassador?
If they are really thinking of adding another diamond for $100,000 don't you think there should be a need of it first? There are too many hours during the week that the present diamonds are not being used.
Peru cannot afford another diamond since it has no money.
Who knows where pickleball can be played and were the equipment can be taken. First the equipment must be found before it can be used by the citizens anywhere. Peru political system is pretty cagey it has no money but found $3,000 for the pickleball equipment.

Peru has a Human Resource Manager who should be the main player in determining wages along with council approval. She is educated in this field and should have the experience and it is her field of expertise.

Lois, I agree you have to give something back to the community! Can you please start with a more civil tone when you start a new subject for your readers. Unless of course this site is all about you, your agenda, your opinion, your splash pad.

Steve, Quote from Peru Town Forum
You are welcome to agree or disagree but please do it in a manner that is respectful to those who are reading this blog and contributing their ideas or searching for answers.
Steve what is your opinion on how this subject and others are presented? Was it respectful? You are on a Committee in Peru. Is this how we should address our concerns with you? Thanks.

I'm sorry you took offense but we have many baseball diamonds and many are not used for the whole summer whereas we will have nothing for the non sport playing kids other than some crafts and thankfully we have that. My children and grandchildren do not live in Peru and would not benefit from a Splash Pad located here but many children would. do it is not my Splash Pad. When I see money being spent needlessly I do get angry and more so when it is not money spent by elected officials. Everyone should be angry about this, it is your tax dollars.

The HR manager was a part-time position; did this administration change it to full-time?

The human resources position in Peru is a joke like everything else. If anyone needed to sue for sexual harassment its her. She got the job because all the male employees thinks she something. She does nothing! She does less than our slow minded mayor when it comes to solving employment issues in Peru. We might as well as dress up our city attorney and put a wig on him and noone would know the difference. She's doesn't do the hiring or firing. She doesn't counsel or discipline. Just another wasted payroll position in Peru.

Because someone disagrees with someone else or the methods in which certain situations are performed does not mean that you should not respect one another or one anothers methods. Sugar coated cookies and a couple cups of diplomacy will accomplish more towards getting things done than rubbing salt into already opened wounds.

I understand that baseball is good for the young people , but a pool would serve more young people . Also the fuel costs are up and the gity would save lots of money each year if they didn't let parttime employs take city trucks and large mowers home for lunch . I know because i was a manger and i never took a company truck home . Lets wake up people and start saveing where we can and then we can get a pool and other things for our younger generation !

Will pickle ball courts, equipment, and clinics be made available to those of us who live at the west end of town - say at Sunset Park?

Speaking of saving money. Who ended up paying the Mayors Olive Garden Dinner? I heard from a reliable city source yesterday we tax payer's paid about $3000,00 dollars. Lois could you verify this?

Anonymous said...

The city was going to pay for that dinner but the city took so much heat from it by the tax payer's. The mayor announced Olive Garden property owners were going to pay the bill.
Mayor Harl wouldn't lie!!

6:54 Ask Steve he seems to know everything the mayor or king or lord or prince or czar or god (sorry got carried away) said or did, but you don't hear much from steve now. Maybe cats got his tongue or maybe he was beheaded (sorry did it again) I better quit before I get the wrath of con thrust upon me. Sorry just couldn't resist

Haha the mayor wouldn't lie . I hope that was a joke . I wouldn't trust Harl to hold a box of Girl Scout cookies for me !

All the summer rec staff should be paid minimum wage. Times are tough today and even adults can't find $10 an hour jobs. Lots of good kids would love to have these summer jobs that they can put on their resumes. Minimum wage and nothing more.

Anonymous said...

I could understand minimum wage for the first year of service. The following year the person should have to reapply and if rehired they should receive a slight increase in pay. This increase should be somewhere in the range of a dime to a quarter per hour. Has the city a history of giving each summer employee a booklet stating the rules, dress code, and work ethic expected. It is very important to set high goals for the summer employees and hand out a few atta boy atta girl when these goals are achieved. A private monthly evaluation from the human resource manager would also be of extreme motivation and value.

Check the paper ! Professional Lawn care companies only start people out at $9 an hour ! Why should kids make more than adults supportting a family because the city of Peru thinks it's so rich ?

From the Recreation Commission Minutes of 3-13-12.

Regarding the prospect of a new Girls' Softball Field, a West Field at Veteran's Park, Ray made a motion to contract Chamlin and Associates to shoot grade for the new diamond and to have a conceptual plan for the whole Veterans Park Complex completed for a cost $3000. This will take us to the development stage. The motion was seconded by Tom Stuart and motion carried. Ray will have drawings copied for the board members and City officials. Next meeting will be held on 4/10/2012.

We have a volunteer citizen committee spending $3000 of your tax money again.
$3000 must be the magic figure. Remember it was $3000 for the Bicycle path to nowhere and $3000 for pickle ball equipment that they are still trying to figure out how to distribute to the residents who wish to use it.

Its your money and you don't get a chance to let the city know how you want it spent.
