Since many of the readers of the blog have no idea of what Water Street looks like but read all the discussions, almost passion about the area I drove there today camera in hand and this is what it looks like on an average day. Most of the usual traffic is industrial as cement mixers and city trucks.
At the western end are several areas where the road is dropping and small cave ins have been occurring in recent years.

For those who are interested in the new super committee established by our mayor I believe the 1st meeting is Monday, Sept. 26th at 6:00. The names of those who have been chosen for this committee (including 4 aldermen)have not yet been released to the public as far as I know. This is the committee designed to work on our streets and infrastructure. All meetings were to be made public I believe.

The time and date? From the city web=site.
Took a ride down Water Street tonight. Lois, your pictures, while not pretty, actually make the street look better than it is. When, if ever, are they going to finish the old Power Plant building? There are signs all over warning "danger, asbestos present". Isn't this a safety issue?

I agree my pictures do enhance the area and I was unable to capture the sinkholes and road cave ins. You have to drive through the road to believe how bad the entire area has become. And I always wonder how thoroughly the area that once contained National Sheet Metal was cleaned of all the contaminants and hazardous chemicals used there. It is now buried at the landfill and it is true that the amount of methane coming up from that ground has to be monitored by the city by epa regulations.
Based on the pictures , the comments, Looks like what is being said is that Mayor Harl and the Super is not doing their job. Finally some recognition.
I guess without rebuttal, this statement is correct.

Lois - you "wonder how NSM was cleaned of all the contaminants" but in the next sentence you make a factual statement that the contaminants are buried in the closed landfill. As proof os this you state that the methane release from the landfill must be monitored by the City. How can you jump to these conclusions? ALL closed landfills are monitored by the owners.
I did not say it was cleaned, I said I wonder if it was cleaned. Read it again. And yes I know that all landfills are monitored as required by the epa. Do you remember the Electrical Utilities cleanup in LaSalle? I don't know but I can wonder, right?
Brian can you tell me if the tearing down process was monitored and approved by the EPA? Considering the chemicals used, why was no further monitoring done and why is the city holding onto that land? Is it for sale? Or is it not owned by the city any longer but someone allows the city to use it whenever they wish and also the Waterstreet Pub?

You missed my point. You stated that contaminated waste from the site was disposed of in the now closed Peru Landfill. If this is true, you need to give your proof to the EPA.
Brian, I stand corrected, it most likely is not in the Peru Landfill.

"Mayor Harl and the Super is not doing their job" FYI: Mayor Harl and the "super committee" hasn't had a SINGLE meeting yet, yet you throw stones accusing them of not doing their job. Perhaps you should have the facts before making such accusations. It is so frustrating to see people on this blog point fingers at each other, while hiding behind the "Anonymous" profile. I congratulate Brian Foster, Lois, Steve W., and whoever else posts their name behind what they say, at least they aren't "slinging mud in the dark." Why don't the people who post on this blog on a regular basis MEET FACE TO FACE to discuss issues relating to the City of Peru? There is such a lag between postings because of Lois (no offense) probably isn't sitting at her computer 24/7. I see so much on here, LIKE THE EXAMPLE I GAVE AT THE TOP, as having no bearing or facts to support it(like I said, they haven't even met yet but are being accused). Stop speculating, and start supporting your theories, or better yet, just meet somewhere in public to discuss issues that you have.
5:13 most use anonymous because they are not going to get into personal debates with individuals who for example do not understand that the Super is the SPW not the better than others of its kind committee. It is best to understand to what you are replying to before you reply.

We will stand up. We are going to change and vote OUT this Mayor and all whom rode in with him. Next election will be very telling about what the people of Peru want for their leaders.

Very nice picture above Lois. As a picture, nice. As a setting for bringing a family to witness the fireworks I see rocks, railroad tracks, more rocks, boulders, a drop off, and then the river. Where do I set my blanket or lawn chairs?
Frank Thompson - I take it you are on the "super committee" because you are defensive of something that none of us know much about. The "super" mentioned above was referring to the superintendent of public works.
SPW = Superintendent of Public Works. 3:41 Wad you thought about Frank attacking someone because he misinterpreted the comment is entirely correct. I agree with you that if Frank would have understood the comment and stuck to the issue he would have fulfilled the goal of the blog.
I personally would like to thank Frank for informing us that the "super committee" has not meet yet as this is the only information that any of us "outsiders" have been informed of it. The Mayor has never informed the citizens why the "super committee" was formed or what it is intended for. He simply stated that he was forming a "super committee" and he would take letters of application until Sept 12. Is this committee going to be similar to President Obamas. It must be remembered that the Mayor has a super committee of 8 council men (six selected by the people and two by himself) as the President has Congress.

SPW = Superintendent of Public Works
Much talk about this "super committee" that is supposed to be established to discuss our infrastructure and roads. It is supposedly to consist of 4 aldermen and 6 citizens all selected by the mayor. The lst meeting is to be Mon. Sept. 26th at 6:00. What I'd like someone to report is = WHO HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR THIS COMMITTEE? It seems to be a mystery.

No one was fooled for 44 years but I must say we all benefited from the 44 years in the progress to our city, low taxes and jobs. (Even You must admit that Lois, facts are facts and not hear-say or rumors)
What has Mayor Harl done for us ?

But the reason our infrastructure roads and sewer and water lines are in such bad condition is because they were not maintained probably for the last 10 to 15 years. Now even you have to admit that.
You're absolutely right Lois. Our past administration was busy with businesses, taxes, building city halls, and large wages. Because of the lack of routine maintenance our streets, sewers, water lines, total infrastructure is collapsing daily and needs immediate attention. The current administration was also left with a large debt. We can go on and keep blaming the past administration for their faults and the current administration for theirs, but it's time to unite and mend the ship before it sinks. Because, it is goinng down rapidly!
perhaps the weather elements these last few years has made an impact on the roads, i dont believe for one minute peru in the only one with bad roads and honestly the repairs going on now have to detour everywhere just to get somewhere what sense does that make? without the former administration we may have had alot worse roads than what we have now, and yes i am a big fan of the former mayor and staff, at least i felt some sort of pride in my city now is just an embarrassment.
Lois, wouldn't four aldermen and the mayor be a quorum? Will this super committee be able to vote?
What a lovely place to pitch a blanket, and let my 2 year old run around as we gaze at the fireworks. Just watch out for the two railroad tracks, the broken glass, the gravel, oh, and the river.
