In Honor of All Women on International Womens Day

Lois, since it is International Womens Day I think it is the appropriate time to bring up this subject. The mayor has two women seeking the vacant fourth ward seat. We also have a woman seeking election in the third ward. This gives the City of Peru a golden opportunity to have a woman's perspective on local government.

Just wondering if anyone else finds the story regarding the $570,000 and the airport a little strange. Was it a drug bust or not? If so, what happened to the drugs? How long was the plane at the airport or did it keep coming and going? How did they know money was on board and once again WHERE ARE THE DRUGS?

I totally agree with you ANON 5:11. Too many missing pieces to this puzzle. How can the police chief say this is probably an isolated incident when they haven't even established whether or not an incident occurred? And what can they continue to investigate? They let the plane and 3 individuals go.

The question was asked at the council meeting and I don't believe she got a decent answer. My comment is if you can't give a honest answer to the residents about what takes place in our "favored" airport, then what is the point of making it front page news. We pay for it and very few benefit from it so at least be honest. In this day and age the first thing people think about is drugs and we need honest answers.

Once again, all that was explained was the MONEY and who get what percentage of it. I, again, do not care about the money. Why no arrests, why not mention of drugs being confiscated, why was the plane turned over to its owner? Questions, questions and no one will answer them. If that is the case then I don't think anything should have been released until the truth could be told.

The residents of Peru can be assured that this case is being handled properly and according to the law.Not all specifics can be released at this time. The Peru police should be commended for the excellent manner in which they handled everything and did what they had to and as it all moves along people will know more details. But in order not to jeopardize the situation, nothing further will be forthcoming at this time.
We all have questions regarding the operation of the airport and hope to discuss this at a later time.

There is no question that this case is probably being handled properly but it still does not explain the many unanswered questions that are on many citizen's minds. Too often we are left in the dark and, when it comes to supposed drug situations we become curious when only the money is mentioned and found and not the drugs.

Agreed ANON 11:57 and it also brings up questions about our airport. Since (I believe) there is no one there at night what's to stop planes from coming and going as they please? I'm not even talking just about illegal activity what about oversized or overweight planes?

Are their two different Lois' commenting to this blog? Lois' comment made at 10:13 A.M. 3/10/11 contradicts the comment made by a Lois at 11:50P.M. 3/9/11.

My main thought is that the police department's function is to make the arrest and the court system is to determine innocence or guilt and penalty.

Yes the money is important but we also do not want to leave drug dealers free to peddle some more drugs. Isn't it true when you stop a car and find drugs that the car then becomes the property of the city or police dept. Lots of unanswered questions but it does leave the unsettling feeling that these drug dealers were let go in lieu of the money becoming the immediate possession of the City rather than have it tied up in court. I would certainly be most unhappy if it were my children or anyone I know were buying their peddled drugs.
Were these individuals carrying anything when they got off the plane and were they carrying the same things when they got back on the plane?

Isn't it also true that the cowboy store on the corner of Fulton and 4th Street (which is still empty but with paper covering the windows has not been concluded) How are we to know there has been closure when no news is given.

The United States has the separation of powers which is the division of constitutional government in a democracy between three separate, independent branches: legislative, executive and judicial. These branches may work well together but it must be remembered that they are separate and independent of each other.
Once one of the branches performs its function it is to allow the next branch the opportunity to perform its particular function separately and independently.

What do the citizens of our area think the penalty should be for a convicted illegal drug dealer?

Decided to go to the council meeting last night. Haven't been in a while. Was shocked to see the meeting lasted a grand total of 20 minutes. As far as I could tell no pressing issues were discussed nor were any problems solved. If this is the norm 4 meetings/month are definitly a waste of tax payers money. Is this the norm?

Peru Town Forum said...

Yes pretty much the norm. FYI perupages.blogspot.com (link on the left side) presented all the candidates with a list of 20 questions and the answers have been slowly coming into Brian Fosters blog. You will find it informative as to how the 4 that have answered so far, feel about the question of reducing the number of meetings. As far as I have heard, the newcomers running for the alderman position in all of the wards would like to reduce the number of meetings per month.

Lois what proof do you have that this airport case is being handled properly and according to the law? How do you know that all specifics cannot be released at this time? Our questions are not in regards to the operation of the airport but in regards to the highly questionable incident which took place at the airport.
I personally can't understand how a city official can confiscate $573,000.00 from another persons property without making a arrest. How much currency can I have in my possession before I am subject to having a government representative relieve me of it?
Nothing here is adding up, but it sure doesn't appear that a bunch of good old boys came to our village simply to have a tour of the area.
From previous comments it does appear that a lot of the citizenship of the area want the facts, nothing but the facts!

Lois,
If you have questions about the operation of the airport, why don't you make a separate post with some of those and I will try to answer them.
To ANON 1:13, There is nothing to stop planes from coming and going as they please. Just like there's nothing to stop people from driving around all night long. What keeps oversize and overweight trucks from driving on our roads at night after you go to sleep?

I am sure it must look like I did a turnaround and lets just say I was informed that the police felt I was accusing them of not being honest and I did not want that to stand. Yes I still have the same questions and many of them are the same as yours and I hope truth will win out in the end.

Chuck thanks for your offer of making yourself available for questions on the airport. I want to do that right, so I probably can't get to it for a few days but i will.

I have the word of the Peru Chief of Police and nothing more. Most of us want more specifics but until answers are given we can only use our own intuitions.

Seems funny the PD nor LCSA will NOT take additional information I have that may assist in the case say maybe Palmdale California? Oh well...

Anonymous said...

What are you talking about? 10:22, What you say doesn't make any sense.g

Anonymous said...

Handled properly are you serious? Why not dig a little deeper and see if maybe any police officers or their family members have any "side" jobs like maybe "cleaning" an auto dealership owned by someone who may just happen to be a pilot and own a jet at the airport? Or why the boot store operated in the middle of Peru right next to the clerks office and two blocks away from the police station and was never busted? Not to mention again, where did the boot-store dealer DJ at again? Trust things will be investigated properly-that is most definately amusing!

I wonder if the police had found a small amount of drugs and paraphernalia in a teenagers vehicle would they have been interviewed then released with no criminal charges.

Anonymous said...

Another issue regarding the money, did it violate the Patriot Act? Where did the plane depart from and it's final destination? All airspace is monitored and I believe the nearest FAA tower is what Bloomington?

Again this is a Federal issue that could possibly involve Homeland Security, drug trafficking, money laundering, etc. all in the middle of a cornfield in a small community of 10,000 welcome to the most corrupt State in the Nation!

p.s don't make to much of a fuss about it. Heated issues tend to bring the pyromaniac to Peru!

3:56-everything adds up!

The rumors and stories are already running rampant regarding the airport incident. That's why, when allowed, the true story needs to come out. Citizens are entitled to know what's happening in their own back yards.

11:25P.M. Are you insinuating that the plane belonged to a local business man? If so, does that mean it's parked at our airport at all times? If that is indeed the case them why would it even be considered suspicious? Still too many unanswered questions. Also, if there was any connection to a bank that might explain the money.

I am not insinuating anything and know just about as much as you do regarding that event. After all grasshopper you must look beyond the trees to see the forest...and there are MANY forests too choose from.

That airport has traffic at ALL hours and seems quite popular between 2:30 and 4:00 am. I want in! That is the best kept secret with the highest political protection wink wInk right Frankie!

In order to release the plane, I imagine this was a
cargo/courier flight. And mostly likely since they where carrying bulk cash smuggling (Supreme Court differentiated in 2008 bulk cash smuggling and money laundering) I assume the pilot stated he was unaware of it's presence. The money was seized and off he went. Now if that is the case-where or where is the bulk house/bank storing the cash for this operation?
