News Tribune Election Guide or Not

When I received todays newspaper, I scanned through it as usual and came across a heading titled Election Guide and a large picture of a pinback button VOTE.

A brief glance told me that the so called Election Guide was not exactly that because I immediately noticed that some of the candidates were not listed. Looked over it several times, trying to figure out what the problem was. Then I noticed a small paragraph stating that their election guide was only a section of political paid advertising.

Excuse me News Tribune if you are going to publish something in your paper and call it an election guide, it should be exactly that and not just the candidates that were willing to pay for it. Tacky to say the least.

Before the election I hope you will publish a complete unpaid for information section of ALL candidates in the towns you service. This was definitely a sham and misleading.

It's all about the money Lois.

I just expect our newspaper to perform some things in the public interest but I guess I must have expectations that are beyond their management.

The News Tribune by using the same format as used in previous years for a summation of all competing candidates as this evenings edition of paid political advertisements is in poor taste and very unethical.

Those candidates not acknowledged deserve a printed apology, and something bigger than the newspapers disclosure of this format being a pd. pol. adv. placed under a multicolor banner stating "ELECTION GUIDE".

The subscribers of this newspaper also deserve a apology although they will never get one. The newspaper and radio stations which are owned by the same people have a glaring weakness - lack of competition - therefore instead of reporting political public interest information they are making a profit on the subject instead. Oh! Well! In eight days or so we will be back to four and five page editions.

hi lois they been doing this for years I was a alderman in lasalle 8 years ago and its all about money, not the public interest i agree with you

lois another example of our fine local paper when i was alderman in Lasalle Mr. Craig sterrett wrote a article about a lasalle alderman supporting the repair of a road in front of his business. The only problem was the alderman had no business on this particular street. When Mr. Sterrett was informed of this he published the smallest retraction you can imagine. This alderman just happened to be pressing for the city to reduce there advertising costs with the news tribune, imagine that. again its all about money

News Tribune you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You owe the paying customers a list of all people running for office. An Election guide is just that, its to list everyone. Come on, be big enough to correct your mistake.

They can correct their mistake but some of the damage has already been done. They got their point across.

First a comment and then a question: I have seen that large inflatable rat at House of Hunan and over by Walgreen's supposedly because of the people doing work there. My question is about a union worker or workers hiring someone to do work on their house for a lower price than the prevaling wage...do they get the large inflatable rat in their front yard?

The local media group is very similar to a old western movie cattle baron or the owner of a coal mine with the company store. They have complete control of the local media and once again have demonstrated that they are going to use this control unfairly. Yes 10:07 some of the damage has already been done and they got their point across.

I think one of the all time John Wayne sayisems (say is ems)was " Round em up and head em out"or was it Gil Fabers of Rawhide fame. Remember Rodey Yates (Clint Eastwood)? Remember we have five more days until April 5th, Election Day, word of mouth is the best political campaign ever created so lets go do it "Were burnen Daylight"

If that was the case, we would be seeing those comic rats all over. Pretty sure that is not the case and they have only used it at businesses.

I can't believe I'm defending the NT... but they ran articles on every candidate - you published copies here.
Their "Election Guide" is no different than AFT Local 604's "Election Guide." Or how about the Building Trades Council "meet and greet" - all the candidates where not invited to that.

I am not familiar with the AFT Local guide and I don't feel you can compare the Building Trades meet and greet as more of the people there were candidates running for office than Peru residents. Yes I was there FYI.
My complaint is that they called this an Election Guide and that was false information and disgraceful for the paper NT to mislead people. If you want to run paid political ads, be honest and call it that in the title and I will have no problem with that.

Looking back at the reply I just printed, I want to say that the Meet and Greet consisted of 7 candidates running for office, their families and a few other people listening to the event.
I just got a paid political ad by Mertel attached to my newspaper tonight.
Not a problem he or someone paid to have it put on and I am aware of that.

Again I am glancing though the NT front page and find a large picture of the sewer separation which has been ongoing in the 4th ward for several years. Also attached to the front page of the paper on the picture is an ad by Dave Potthoff for re election. Kind of funny that his ads do not say re election, perhaps trying to avoid the fact being mentioned that he has been in office for 20 years already.
Well known that the management of the NT has well known ties with the YMCA and that Potthoff is chief executive officer of the Y. Coincidental or orchestrated? Is the NT trying to use the media?

This sounds to me like a little bit of backing by the local media to promote Mr. Potthoff. Is this any different than a union promoting a candidate? I think not! Actually, I feel it's worse because the paper wants us all to purchase their product yet they seem to favor a particular candidate. Not my choice for both the candidate and the local paper.

The paper is biased. Miller Group, is backing the CEO all the way. Even though hes been in 20 years, I can't think of anything major he has done for our city. He gets paid for being on the council, whether he is on a special committee or not. I think its time for all new aldermen, alderwomen, or councilmen or women. New blood new ideas.g

Oh give me a break. Anyone who lives in this community knows the local newspaper supports and promotes their own selection of candidates. We should all be accustomed to that bias by now and able to make our own decisions.

As for Alderman Potthoff, I couldn't believe the 3-page promo papers he stuck in my door last Saturday. His copy said, "I have fought hard to improve our water supply in the south end and cleaned up run down properties."

Regarding the water supply, the only time I received a communication from Alderman Potthoff was when in the fall when it was confirmed that Steve Weberski was running against him. Then Alderman Potthoff delivered an update on the sewer project that had been going on all summer in his ward. I didn't need an update as I had been living with it.

Apparently he avoided looking across the street from my property (when he was delivering his Saturday promo) and see all the junk piled up on the "run down property" and yard across from mine. But then I've seen him drive past it, too.

Alderman Potthoff might be good for the Y, but he isn't doing his job as an alderman for, per his words, "... I fondly call, Southwest Peru."
In my opinion, the southwest section of Peru would be better served with a new alderman.
