In this article News Tribune reporter , Jeff Dankert writes that Peru City Council on Aug 29 voted 5-4 approving a half per-percent retail sales tax hike to begin Jan 1.
The Peru City Council consists of eight council members, four with tenure in office who voted against the increase and four who would be considered "infants in learning" who voted for the tax increase. The fifth vote for the increase was cast as a tie breaker vote by the Mayor.
Home Rule allowed the tax increase to be accepted in this procedure rather than a referendum. Everyone thought that this sales tax increase was earmarked for roads and it is to have a sunset of five years.

We can change the name of the project all we want but those who read the paper or attend meetings know this was facilitated by the Eakas expansion. Did the work need to be done in this area - probably? Probably for many, many years. For some unknown reason the city of Peru is bending over backwards for this Eakas expansion that will only generate 25 jobs. My big question is where is the money coming from? The sales tax increase doesn't begin until January and according to the paper Eakas plans on starting it's new operation August 1, 2013.

Here again is the type of B******* that Mayor Harl is giving to the city of Peru. Sales tax for roads ? Bait and Switch , Ha ..

When will the citizens stand up and be heard , enough is enough. When the need for roads are needed the money will NOT be there because the Mayor is spending it for something else.

VOTE THIS GUY OUT OF OFFICE and SOON !!!!!!! We need to vote for someone that we can trust his/her word. REMEMBER in the future.
God I miss the previous mayor and aldermen. At least they were open each meeting to discuss ALL issues, right or wrong.
This mayor comes to the council meeting with behind closed door agreements and then asks for a vote without any discussion.
What Crap and What transparency !
