What a wonderful idea. I'd like Peru to take some initiative and start looking into replacing some of our Xmas decorations. Some are so old the lights are not even visible and probably shouldn't even be hung.
Just thinking about that also. How old are our Christmas decorations? I think they are purchased and hung by the CSO and wonder if any CSO members reading this would let us know whether this year we might have some new decorations and if you have not purchased wholesale maybe Walmart might give us a discount. Or maybe the city could take a little initiative on its own and make a donation to the residents with some nice looking Christmas decorations to help many through this Holiday Season.
How about the Recreation Commission? Last I heard they had roughly $46,000 remaining in their budget. Could they provide some help in this respect? I'm really not sure what that group's money is earmarked for. It's a group that I don't quite understand. We give them money and then they independantly spend it as they see fit.
If the Recreation Commission has $46,000 remaining in a budget and this is city money why not take it and pay some of the cities debts. I do believe that a businessman loaned Peru $45,000 to set up a TIF. No one has to look for reasons to spend $46,000 in Peru. It has already been spent a long time ago. Are the $15,000+ cost of the swimming pool study paid for and the same for the $22,000 electrical study. What was the result of the electrical survey? Would it be a good idea that committees such as the recreation committee would have to appear and ask the council for money each time they want something rather than giving them a budget at the start of the year. The Department Heads have to appear in front of the finance committee and get approved on expenditures over $5,000. Appears that committees could also use similar guidelines to the cities advantage.
If cost is a problem, how about buying for 4th street this year and next year buy for Shooting Park Rd. Then you don't have to replace all the Christmas decorations at once. Downtown looks good with the lighted garland around the street lights.
Cost is not the problem! The problem has been stated before and it is that the Leader of the Illinois Valley, a role model of government confusion and financial incompetence prides itself on huge debt and false prosperity rather than austerity. For example: This evening it is on the agenda of the city council meeting to discuss and possibly vote on buying the Assistant Fire Chief a F250 crew cab for over $28,000. Is a city of less than 10,000 population really going to do this? Peru does not have a cost problem it has a huge spending problem.
Anon 5:34 PM Yes the city council of Peru really did this with a unanimous vote of 8 yes to 0 no, and all the citizens got was a out of tune version of "Happy Trails to You Until We Meet Again" Quite a time frame until a year from next April. Good Luck Trigger
