Want to post a sign in Peru? Check here first - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

I don't know about you but I am thinking what a joke after the blatant misuse of political signs a few months ago. I also noticed that they did not mention political signs maybe because of state law regarding them. Also see nothing about garage sale signs, are they excused? Does the rat count as a blow up fixture? What about the signs in the triangle that seem to be up in abundance all summer long?

Will the council have a discussion about this or just vote?

They should make the ordinance easy to find on the web page (if they have not). The newspaper could then post link as part of this article.
What is with this area - always making it difficult to figure out the rules. According to the article, you have to go to city hall to fill out the form - why not put an FAQ out that explains the whole process. Not everyone has time to "go to city hall and fill out a form." Jeez - can we make this any more complicated?

As far as I'm concerned - garage sales are the second most abused temporary sign. Followed by the beer sings with small print advertising for questionable charity events.

The RAT should definitely fall under this ordinance. It should not be allowed on the public right-of-way. So unless RAT MAN gets permission to set up shop on somebody's property, he should be ticketed and forced to pull his display down. If he refuses - hall his rat behind off to the county jail in Ottawa.

Did anybody hear about the council meeting on Monday? There was no write up in the NT last night about the meeting.

So tired of seeing those bar and gambling 4x10 vinyl signs hanging all over buildings and sidewalk rails around the towns. Tacky and eyesore. Really makes me want to stop and shop! NOT!

Speaking of signs, does anyone else think that all those banners and flags that are hanging in the triangle between Peoria St. and Plank Road are an unsightly distraction at that location? I've always wondered how those huge banners have been allowed there.

10:28, they are ugly. But they are on private property. The people putting them up are very careful to keep them out of the right-of-way. The "Triangle" is also outside of city limits. It is one of those "islands" of property that are surrounded by Peru but are not in Peru.

No comments on Monday's council meeting?

3:44 PM

It was over within about 15 minutes. Probably just long enough for attendance to be checked.

11:47 So any citizen can put up ugly signs like that on their private property? I would bet they would be told to remove them or get fined.

Anonymous said...

6:44, who is going to fine them, they are not part of the city?

Anonymous said...

6:44, yes,,, more importantly, why is this "agricultural land" outside city limits even though it is surrounded by the city. It should be annexed into Peru and zoned something besides agricultural. To much poison running off that field and being sprayed into the houses near there.

11:47, The city has some restrictions. Please read the ordinance. It is all covered. But, we are in the USA - so if somebody decides to put a campaign sign in their front yard for Adolf Hitler - it cannot be stopped unless it violates a provision in the ordinance.

Anon 6:32 AM That property belonged to a bachelor who farmed it 70 years ago when where wasn't a house except his near by. Than property statred being built North of Shooting Park Road. The man's nickname was Smokey and I believe his last name was Hoffnan. Now how do you believe it should be taxed. He did not want anything but farm property whic it was.

5:15, this is not about tax, but since you mentioned it I would tax it at such a rate that it provided incentive to use the land for something else. Right now, King Corn has such an advantage. Paying virtually no property tax, getting subsidies from the government, selling to ethanol plants that get subsidies from the government. King Corn is the biggest welfare recipient in the state. Since this property, and the one right across Peoria Street, is essentially in the middle of a residential and commercial area. I would increase the tax on that property to the point at which it makes it unprofitable to farm. This will force the sale of the land for residential or commercial use. Keep King Corn at least 1,000 yards away from developed land!

70 years ago? 1945? The Pigly Wiggly wasn't even there in 1945. So you are trying to justify the continued use of that property as an island of agriculture surrounded by housing and commercial development on the fact that it was farmed by a bachelor in 1945? No. Property like that needs to be annexed into the city and allowed to develop. Modern agriculture should not be allowed in close proximity to housing. I'm all in favor of modern farming - but not 50 feet a house. The farmers don't even have their houses that close to the fields.

Anonymous said...

8:18, what don't you understand, the farm was already there, development built next to it, it's not the farmers fault it's money making developers being allowed to by small parcels instead of buying whole farms if the farmer would sell, the city has to set regulations for developments.

Anonymous said...

Farms are poisons.

Anonymous said...

3:53 - the "farmer" does not own that field. The "developer" does. The farmer is leasing the land. Don't you remember that little movie theater scam they tried to pull?

Anonymous said...

The wealthiest man in the county owns that land. Along with most of the development around there.

Anonymous said...

The wealthiest man in the county is a TIF Sucker. He makes more money on TIF's, Sales Tax Rebate Schemes, and subsidized rents to King Corn than anything else. In other words, he is compounding his millions on our tax dollars.

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:27 PM Is this all being done legally or illegally? If legally how any others are doing it?

Anonymous said...

11:20, it is all perfectly legal. And almost everyone involved in "development" does it. The problem is the way our "representatives" have staked the laws in Illinois to allow this sort of crony capitalism. Granted, the corn subsidies are Federal and not Illinois. But if you talk about doing away with them every Podunk Illinois Rep. will scream foul. All Hail King Corn!
Locally - Why on earth would the City of Peru surround several corn fields? I'll tell you why, this lets the "developer" rent the land to King Corn until a better opportunity arises. Only then will the property be annexed into the city. Just look at a map and you will see these little islands of corn.

Anonymous said...

and then when the land is developed, there is some sort of scheme to turn over sales tax or property tax revenue back to the developer. We still are not getting any home rule sales tax from the new super wally world.

like it or not, that is how business is done nowadays. Unless Uncle Sam gives them little sugar, don't count on anything new being built. To bad, so sad, you need to be connected and have good lobbyists to start or expand a business. Uncle takes some of the sting away you see. But once they get rolling, oh boy! The tax kickbacks just roll on in - don't really need customers to make a profit with the taxpayers taking care of expenses. Just need to butter the right bread now and then to maintain the status quo.

Funny how that NT article didn't make a difference- there is currently a sign on plank rd/Peoria st for an event July 25th- ordinance is 14 days prior to event. It's been there 3-4 weeks already and another month to go.

People pay taxes, businesses don't. Any tax that a business pays is directly compensated for by increasing their price. Any tax rebate or kickback is pocketed, not used for "development." So the crony businesses in Illinois - that ones that suck on TIF's and get sales tax rebates, are collecting on both sides of the equation. But Madiagan and the Legislature created this mess. Now they want to run off what little remains of our manufacturing.
