An amusing thought occurred to me recently.
Many of us have observed our narcissistic mayor's tendancy to impress us all with his amazing power of "Networking" with all sorts of political "muckity-mucks" throughout the state and even nationally. I really believe those officials take Harl's glad-handing as humorous at best. I don't think they could possibly take him as seriously as he takes himself.
Anyway, I was just thinking of those gaudy, self serving Vanity Plates on Hizzoner's vehicle and it occurred to me. If there was ever a legitimate investigation into this payroll scandal by a truly independent and legitimate Law Enforcement Agency, Mayor Harl could at some point in the near future find himself in a position to manufacture his very own Vanity License Plates at one of the fine Illinois correctional institutions that makes those very license plates.
Alas, there will be sad news for all of us Harl haters as I predict this investigation will lead the Honorable Judge Balestri to soon inform us all that he has been able to determine, drum roll pleae, absolutely "NOTHING". Furthermore, Mr. Balestri's recommendation will be as follows; "Move along folks, nothing to see hear. Your aldermen have effectively covered their asses by authorizing this "phony baloney" investigation and now it's time to get back to business as usual in dysfunctional Peru.
Oh, and by the way. My vague and uninformative report shall remain sealed from public view, to be released only at the disgression of those very same aldermen and good luck finding out exactly what the hell this scandal was all about in the first place folks".
What a damn disgarce these elected officials are. For those of you holding your breath until justice is served in the "Great Payroll Scandal", a word of advice.
Breath deep! Breath deep!
There will once again be no justice in Peru.
Happy Holidays!

I don't care what anybody says or believes but I just came from the vicinity of the infamous Venture Drive intersection and WHAT A MESS!!! Cars coming and going from all directions. Intersections being blocked. Accidents causing more back ups. Entrances to businesses unaccessible. This was still occurring at 12:00 noon. Can't imagine what it was like early this morning.

Anonymous said...

I was just up there at 12:15. I saw a well functioning intersection being disrupted by Illinois Valley residents that just don't know how to drive. Most of the problmes I saw where being caused by the "wavers" directing traffic from inside their cars. Despite the best efforts of the wavers, the 30 something pickel ball moms suffering from "Naperville Envy" could not see them from inside their grotesquely oversized SUV's because they where to busy talking and texting on their phones.
Between the wavers and the yappers, it is hard to believe that anyone is able to drive through any intersection in Peru.

12:20- Was out earlier if course shopping. I absolutely avoid going to stores by that interesection. Black Friday or any other time.

12:40 Your attitude toward your fellow man tells me that you're the kind of person who blames others for your failures. You are right to a certain degree and that is that the drivers do create many of the problems. That's why common sense should prevail and simpler solutions should be found to amend problems. You don't fix one problem while creating many more. The amount of cars that were backed up in "all" directions tells me we have not found the right solution as of yet. I'm sorry you seem to be such an unhappy, bitter person but blaming others for a poorly designed intersection makes me wonder if you're a part of the original design.

Anonymous said...

Boy 12:40, you have to be involved in politics in peru. Not very smart to say that on Black Friday at 12:15 you were up at intersection and saw no problems other then what you mentioned. You must be whacked in some way. Naperville people don't come to shop in peru, why would they? For crying out loud, the illinois valley residents go up there and to Peoria or Bloomington.

Anonymous said...

Of course people don't come here from Naperville. I said "Naperville Envy" which is what many people in Pure suffer from. They think the "Burbs" are the greatest place on Earth and dream of endless bread sticks and talk down their nose at us red necks while they spout talking points from the Illinois Democrat Party.

Anonymous said...

How is a retired judge with no power to subpeona going to conduct an effective investigation. The man actually stated in open meeting that "nobody has to talk to me" for crying out loud.
What the hell good do these aldermen think this "Toothless Lion" of an ivestigator is going to be able to find out when Gary Bleck and other past and present city employees refuse to talk?
Oh, now I get it! The aldermen are going to get exactly what they want. NOTHING!

The intersection was fine this morning.
12:20 - your comment reminds me of the Yogi Berra quote: "Nobody goes there anymore, It's too crowded."

For all you people that HATE that intersection, why not go around the back way? The whole point was to shift local Peru traffic and maybe the Spring Valley yokals away from Rt. 251 to North Peoria Street. It is a FACT that everyone from Peru suffers from a condition that prevents them from negotiating an intersection without either waving others through or yap yap yapping on their cell phone. Furthermore, why is it that all Peru drivers keep two and a half car lengths between them and the car in front of them while waiting at a red light? The intersection could accomodate 2 times the traffic if locals just learned how to drive.

Anonymous said...

More people are using Peoria street as an entrance to Target, etc. and that is why there are now more accidents on that road.

Anonymous said...

9:56- PERU RESIDENTS SHOULD BE FIRST AND FOREMOST. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO PAY PROPERTY TAXES AND SHOP ON A REGULAR BASIC IN PERU. 9:56- IT'S A GOOD DAY TO FLY A KITE.

Anonymous said...

Entering and exiting the back way is an obvious inconvenience, depending on where one lives. Let's say one goes to home lives off Wenzel road goes to Home Depot, then wants to go to Wal-mart. What a pain in the rear end. Doesn't make since why this intersection was changed to how it is. Down right stupid sad to say.

Anonymous said...

It is a FACT that most people that shop in Peru do NOT live in Peru. Peru has been living off of the sales taxes generated by out of towners for many years. The roads in and around the shopping areas MUST be set up in such a way that access from NORTH (I-80 / Rt. 251) has priority!
The intersection is fine. The drivers are the problem.
I plan my trips and I NEVER have problems. And I NEVER take left turns ALWAYS RIGHT TURNS! Saves gas and saves time. I also IGNORE the WAVERS and HONK AT THE YAPPERS!
I mean really, going to any store in Peru is EASY if you just pay attention and follow the RULES OF THE ROAD! The only ones that have a problem with the "NEW" interseciton just don't know how to drive - AND YES, I EAT AT DQ OFTEN AND NEVER HAVE TROUBLE GETTING IN OR OUT.

4:16, you should be mighty proud of yourself and have the time to be inconvenienced by this fiasco of an intersection . I however find this intersection a mess.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you 11:58

Anonymous said...

4:16 I agree. It's not a big deal. Many towns have their local travel nuances. If you plan ahead and know the traffic it isn't a big deal and people forget the problems it solved.

Anonymous said...

6:24 And what problems might they be that were solved by creating this trap?

Anonymous said...

I like the intersection. I think things go much smoother. That is, as long as you understand the rules. Like really, why do those jamopes try to turn into the mall parkinglot? They should not use that way to get to the mall. They are just jamopes and deserve to be hit.

Is it true that years ago this same intersection was addressed with the end result it was returned to its original plans because any conclusion was disatisfactory. Than over a year ago the issue was reopened with a new approach that many - business and individual were upset with but the Mayor shut the door in the face of all involved.
This is only one example of one of the many issues that have not been finalized because of weak mangement judgement and therefore reoccur continuously, To put a issue to bed you must reach a conclusion that is satisfactorly to more than a few. As Mayor Harl said at the library debates thats how it works, the MAJORITY wins.

Anonymous said...

The intersection is worse now than before. This is the work of an idiot and an idiotic mayor who is too stupid and bullheaded to see it is wrong. I feel sorry for the businesses that are loosing money because of this fiasco.

Anonymous said...

9:37 That is exactly what happened. Mayor Baker tried to correct the congestion at the intersection but found out it didn't work so he put it back to it's original status. Mayor Harl was approached by business owners, citizens, and engineers begging for a different solution because they didn't feel his way was working. As a matter of fact business owners had proof that they were losing money and petitions by customers saying they were unhappy with the change. The mayor ignored them and was in fact, in my opinion, at times rude to them. Obviously the intersection still remains "the mayors way". Not only is it a pain it looks ridiculous with all the signs and pylons.

I live in Peru and am thinking of raising chickens. Both for food (eggs and meat) and as a hobby and possibly make a few dollars. I was thinking of a flock of 20 to 30 birds. Does anyone know what the rules are for raising chickens in Peru?

Anonymous said...

The intersection is yesterday's news. I want to find out how long it will be before the City buys back the old ESDA building.

Anonymous said...

10:47...if you can get enough people to raise chickens, majority rules!

But 11:38 you will need an ambassador.

9:22. Just wait. Soon Harl will not be mayor any more and hopefully Potthoff will listen to those business owners up there on Adventure Drive. I still curse it every time I go up there.

Nice way to try and change the subject from the (maybe) crooks in Peru. Check into who investigated Dixon and get them on the job! If it is possible, let them go back 40 years or so.

I'll be the Ambassador of Eggs and Bacon.

Since the general distaste for the intersection has been brought up again, I thought I would share this link to a video. It is just under 15 minutes long, but it is interesting to note how deregulating the intersection has made things infinitely better and smoother. Occurrences such as this are gaining traction in Europe. Hope you enjoy

Ok. back to the intersection discussion. I noticed that the entrance on the south side of the mall & other businesses does not require you to only turn right to the west when exiting. I noticed that the entrance to Hyvee does not require you to turn to the west only when leaving the store and other businesses on that busy frontage road. I noticed that the entrance to Menards, Staples, the bowling alley and other businesses does not require you to turn only one way when exiting. I noticed that the entrance/exit south of Kohl's by the truck stops does not require you to turn only one way when exiting. All of these intersections are extremely busy, with large semi's too, yet exiting is still allowed to the east and west. So why is it that only the entrance by Dairy Queen requires that you only exit to the west? Seems like the original study done by IDOT is outdated now that walmart is no longer by Dairy Queen. Traffic is far more congested at the other entrances. Something seems odd.

4:16 A of DS here

I have taken your advice of always pre planning my trips around Peru to make only right turns, to save gas and money. I have taken it on step further, and must agree with you that it is people that are the problem. I now plan my day around the house only turning right, and have changed doctors because I got trapped turning only right in my old doctors lots.

I agree wholeheartedly that there really is nothing the Mayor can do to us that we cannot deal with by just a little pre planning, and I too eat at DQ with absolutely no problem, especially since I drive a deer spotting Land Rover with 20 inch clearance and can pretty much four wheel myself out of there through the culvert.

The intersection is only a problem for people who do not ignore it, and the pylons come down easily, and the bank never turns anyone in any more. I have it on good authority that the businesses North of the intersection are enjoying a quieter shopping season and are happy there is much less hustle and bustle.

And as far as your points about people outside of Peru coming here and doing most of the shopping, I have to agree with you that they are the problem. There are far too many people who live outside Peru that come and bother us, and I wish they all would stop congregating at that intersection and those hotels. Whose idea was it to build all those hotels anyway? Didn't they know that would attract outsiders?

They were all built, along with almost every business or factory in Peru long before Mayor Harl took over, so you can't blame him for bring in all that hubbub and outside riff raff. From what I can see he has done all in his power to get rid of all these bothersome businesses and flatten the land so it can be paved and LEVEL. A quiet and level town is what most of non bloggers want, a place where you can raise a family and spot some deer in peace!

Sorry, I did not want to get all political but I think you all know that intersection is a sore spot with me, since I praised the mayor for his yellow phallic sculptures on the new art campus there. Lets give some credit to the man.

7:45 - apples and oranges? How about this. Try to turn left from the HyVee gas station (leaving the south entry / exit). People have learned that this is difficlut, to say the least. The only people that try to use that route are out of towners or people that just don't think beyond starting their car. It is much easier to join the south bound traffic on Plaza Drive from the gas station's north entry / exit. Even then, it is often difficult to turn left (south) due to many people going to the grocery store. I often resort to taking a right turn and turning around in the Pizza Hut parking lot - not much traffic at the end of the road and this is faster than waiting for all the traffic going to the grocery store - in fact, by doing that you can kind of turn the tables on them since they will have to yield to you when you return to the intersection. Come to think about it, now that the old KMart building is empty, why not extend Plaza Drive all the way to Wenzell Road? It's no like anything will ever move into that building anyway.
My point is that people need to be aware of all of their options when driving. The fastest way often involves going the "wrong way." This FACT is something that often confuses Peru drivers that are either so set in their ways that going a different way is out of the question or are incapable of abstract thought.

I like eggs. It would be nice to purchase eggs that where "made" in Peru. It looks like nobody knows the rules though. I searched the city web page and there is no mention of chickens.

Anonymous said...

Isn't that just like the snooty Peru people. Complaining all the way to the bank with OUR tax money. I'm sorry that we clog up your streets with all the shopping we do.
On the subject of sales tax - there are some people in Springfield that believe that the current method of distributing sales tax money is NOT FAIR. And they are right! Sales tax money should be distributed just like income tax money - based on population. That way, as long as we shop in Illinois, OUR tax money will come back to OUR City.
Lets see what the hoity toity Peru people have to say when they have to share their golden goose with Spring Valley, LaSalle, and Oglesby and the rest of the State!
Majority Rules! And there are more people shopping in Peru that don't live in Peru!

Anonymous said...

Is this intersection unpopular with the majority or only a few who keep submitting their dissatisfaction to the blog? North Peoria enables a easy access-exit to all of the local area, so why not use it? If this issue is only a problem over the holidays why not post notification and proceed it as such? It seems as if this has become a matter of being stubborn and not wanting to accomadate reality.

8:31. I assume your last sentence was referring to Mayor Harl??

Anonymous said...

No, it is referring to everybody including Mayor Harl! It has been proven that this will never be a easy fix but as time goes on there should be attempts to improve upon the present one and until that time comes lets not scare sales tax dollars away. To all out of towners we of Peru do not like the present setuup any better than you and are trying for a improvement. Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas.

Anonymous said...

Since the gas prices are so low now, I'm doing most of my shopping in Peoria and the "burbs."

Anonymous said...

8:09 just so you know there is a huge infrastructure cost in a town like Peru. These are costs that I assume your town does not incur. Besides the additional infrastructure costs for the streets and roads and maintenance so you have a nice close place to shop we also have a huge police force in comparison to other towns our size. Just keep that in mind when you talk about us "hoity toity" people.

I know this concept is hard for many people to grasp but when you pay your low sales tax its not like Peru is getting rich. Yes we have more money for some projects but we also have other huge costs that we pay into as well. It's all on a matter of scale.

Also most of us are not complaining about shoppers "clogging roads". Don't be fooled by a few people who complain on a blog. No offense to them, but most people don't give the intersection a thought. I could have driven through it three times in the time it took to write this. Not everyone is unhappy to be in and around Peru. I love my town.

I wonder how many towns would give anything to have a problem with "shoppers clogging roads"?

Answer: all of them.

Anonymous said...

4:09 - just look at your property tax bill. Other cities use property taxes to pay for stuff that Peru uses sales taxes generated from out of towners. On top of that, your school board has their own sales tax to pay for your new fancy school. Then they get half of they get a grant from the state for half of the cosst of the school and they are using that to pay for another hoity toity school expansion. Then your Mayor puts another sales tax in place to fix your streets. Yes Peru is cashiing in and making it on the backs of workers from other towns. Then your city gives fake overtime to city workers just becasue the city has extra money.
Yes, the technology exists to distribute the sales tax money based on the address of the person spending the money. That would be fair.

11:25pm -- 5:31am -- EXCELLENT!!!!! GEE 4:09pm I wonder who you are AND the CONNECTION???

Anonymous said...

4:09 of course there is a huge infrastructure cost When you have to pay phantom wages .

And you really need to get a life driving three times around that crappy God awful traffic knot you seem hell bent on tying to whether you love Peru or not. Peru sucks. Peru is great. Matter of opinion. But that intersection is a friggin fail and has hurt the business'.

Just admit it. Move on. Its easier to get an annulment from the Pope than it is to get a Peru insider to admit a mistake. If you want to find out what ordinary folks think about it just aak them. Most hate it, but this " do not challenge the Holy Peru rulers" attitude has beaten down most people here. Complainers here are ignored. They get listened to in other places.

Anonymous said...

5:44 so do all towns where people go to shop or eat or whatever. They usually have a lower property tax rate and a higher sales tax rate. That is one of the benefits to being in that town. We have the traffic and other costs and don't forget those of us who live in Peru shop here as well so what is the difference? Spare me the "working people" crap. We are all "working people" in the Illinbois Valley.

Some of you seem to think that one town should build all of the infrastucture and pay for that but your town should do nothing and get a check sent back. Really? Sorry but that will be the day when you can go somewhere and shop and have the tax money follow you back home. Just because you live there? So I can go shop in Chicago and they will send the sales tax back to Peru? Please.

Yes 6:19 I love that someone has to be an "insider" with a "connection" to like my town. I'm not an insider and I have no connections.

I'm not crazy about the intersection just for the record. It could probably be done better BUT they solved the backup problem to 251 that everyone was complaining about and they did it at almost no cost. I just don't see it as a crisis when I drive through it and I do on at least a weekly basis. It's not a big deal is all I am saying.

Sorry for disagreeing or expressing an opinion or if I offended you in some way. I thought that was what "blogging" was supposed to be about but clearly that is not the case here.

Anonymous said...

The intersection is old news. We are in the investigation phase.
