This blog is maintained for the sole purpose of allowing the people of Peru and those interested in the cities of the Illinois Valley to express their views.
“It doesn’t take a majority to win, just a tireless minority that will keep starting brush fires in the mind and hearts of their fellow men.” Samuel Adams
A splashpad is a fantastic idea for Peru. A question that is continually being asked is why does it have to be located in Washington Park? Centennial Park is a family park with with a greater potential. Parking has to be considered which Wahington Park has never had and Centennial has. Also the amount of open space is extremely inportant for future development. The city should be making a financial committment and do much of the construction of the splash pad. It is puzzling why young families with small children have not made demands of Peru city officials for this form of water recreation. Peru city officials should be ashamed of themseves for not already building a splash pad. This is just another example of not having any planning - short and long range. The Mayor should have had a presentation of future plans the day he shut the pool down 3 years ago. The pool group should be congratulated for taking the leadership it has and should be given all the assistance needed.
I agree 9:30 am, The mayor and aldermen should have come up with a Splash Pad plan of their own a long time ago. Or, at least a collaboration plan with the Pool Group. The city council will spend like "drunken sailors" when they want to toot their own horns about this or that, but it seems like they just refuse to accept any public input unless it is their idea or initiative. How they can continue to turn their backs on such a simple and worthwhile recreational idea I will never understand. Do you think they are just waiting for Chamlin to suddenly step forward to inform them that they will be glad to provide engineering services for a Splash Pad? That has to be it. Vortex is an "outsider" and unworthy. We must pad the billable hours of Chamlin & Associates eith each and every opportunity. By the way has our SPW/Engineer done any actual engineering yet or has the mayor cut the young man off at the knees to protect those Chamlin invoices?
Why? Because we only have about 1,200 "kids" that will use the facility in Peru (2010 census). The average age our population is 48 years old (male) and 52 years old (female). Not exactly prime child bearing age. The only reason our population increased for the 2010 census was because assisted living facilities where built.
The age of people who will have children have and are leaving the area and not returning. Fact! I have a friend who lives here and his three children left the area and will never return except to visit. Sorry to say the ones who stay either have family money, or no ambition to better themselves. It's a big world out there with a lot more to see and do then peru has to offer. I disagree that peru has a big town atmosphere. Compared to what?
Man this blog is the most depressing thing you can read. Who are you people? The only ones who live here either have family money or no ambition to better themselves? Who do you think you are and which category do you fall into? Or do you really live here?
Maybe you would like to meet me and some of my friends. We are hard working professional people with kids in school and doing very well. I'm not from here but my wife is. I don't think if you knew her you would think she was "old money" or lacking ambition!
What is sad is you people who live in misery every day. Stop blaming the mayor or city or government for whatever it is that ails you. Better yourself. Take up a hobby. Just get off the internet and quit complaining because no one cares that you are miserable and nothing will be fixed sitting behind a computer.
Lois I would prefer that you not publish this as I just want to share it with you. If you do fine, but your blog caters to the biggest group of complainers I have ever seen. I do not think many of these people are actually from here, but they do enjoy making Peru look bad. At one time it seemed like it was for a more positive purpose but that is clearly lost.
Where is the positivism? Where is the organization? What is YOUR plan and direction? Is this going anywhere? Or is it just always going to be a place to spread rumors? To complain NO matter what direction something is going? I mean for whatever reason the splash pad is now on the table and of course this is a horrible thing. Unbelievable.
You never have anything positive to say. Your bloggers are far worse. Name calling, lies, rumors and yes, I am sure some things are true. Big deal. The question is what good is to come of it? Is your purpose just to let people say what they want?
The personal attacks, name calling and nastiness on here are awful. As long as they do not disagree with you, anything goes. I am sure you will say it is justified because that is how they are treated by the city. Is that really the case? I've never heard of that from anyone I know who deals with the city people.
I'm not affiliated with the city and I really don't know the city leaders. I am talking about basic human decency for which you are responsible and for which you provide this public forum. It is sad and I hope you will try to turn it into something good. If not and the current comments continue, you are doing far more damage than any good for our community. I read blog posts on many different websites and I have never seen anything quite like this. I hope it can change. Thank you.
Centennial Park would be a much better location for a splashpad than Washington Park. Washington Park, lacking parking space, is a huge complex of baseball fields with three tennis courts and a tower which for all appearances has left it as being very generic in appearance. Centennial Park has unlimited potential for being a family park with plenty of space left for family activities of all ages. It is logistically located that children from all neighborhoods could get to it safely and with ease.
Since you are "anonymous", there seems to be no harm in publishing your post. I find it interesting that you live in Peru and have a very positive opinion and many have experienced downright nasty ugly experiences and both live in the same city. I have seen special people treated "special" and I have seen ordinary people treated poorly, I won't publicly tell you what I think. The complaints should not always be looked upon as something not to be mentioned in polite society. I think before you criticize so severely maybe you could step out of your comfort zone and be aware that not all that is written here is done just to be mean, they may be relating real life experiences to you and you would not believe. I personally could relate some and you would not belive.
The organization, planning and doing needs to be coming from the top and not from this blog. The positive attitude needs to be developed from the top not from this blog and it is not. Would you believe I just talked to someone who is involved with the city and discussed this very thing.
5:21, i could blog many more things that would enlighten people. I haven't due to the fact of being related to a person down there at city hall. I understand you blogged about rumor, lies, etc..., I'm sure there are questions and eyebrows being raised on some things that have been blogged on here. Let me tell you something, a couple of those blogs are my blogs and they are 100% true. Where there's smoke there's fire. When bloggers actually use names they are referring to, I would say they would be able to back their blog up by facts. If blogs don't have truth to them, don't you think the persons who name was supposedly being slandered would file a lawsuit? Haven't heard of any lawsuits, have you? The reasons a person wouldn't file a lawsuit because they know it's the truth!. I believe this BLOGSITE is the best thing that has ever happened in peru since 2009. Every city should have one. Really think about what I just blogged. If you were being slandered in truth, there wouldn't be a thing you could do about it. Especially if the blogger has facts or witnesses to back up their blog. The excuse that will be used is to say people on this forum are miserable, ..... Not true, people on this forum are smart and can't be b.s.ed.
I think you are all overrating how many people read the blog. It's not a big number. Ask around.
Lois, 5:21 brings up some very good points. No one is saying that there is not leadership needed at the city level, the person asked what are you doing to help. I agree it is nothing but a place for malcontents. People to not gravitate toward negativism. Why not use this to try to do some good? What the hell is wrong with that idea? Never mind. It's easier to complain and just pretend you are doing something good.
As for "truths" 6:09 I have insight myself and I've never read to much BS in my life. I am not doubting that you have blogged things that are the truth but just scroll through some of these posts. You don't find "truth" in there. Just because there are morsels of truth does not mean anyone can come here expecting to get facts.
I agree the blog can be a great tool but this is shameful and sad and I am sorry but it is not representative of the hundreds of people I know in my community. MOST of whom don't know or care about people whining on a blog.
I would have expected your comment to offer and expand upon the good you will offer to the city.
For my part, I have signed the petition to reduce the number of aldermen and will continue giving my opinions on the manner in which this city is being governed and how it is affecting the residents of the city. I study and get in touch with other cities and am learning so much about what is good and what is not and how we can do a better job. Maybe you should ask our officials what they can do to make this a better city. It is in their control not mine.
The blog will and does consider your public comments and opens them for discussion. The city representation has decreased its public meetings to by 1/2 and reduced citizens public comment to a 3" X 5" index card and 3 minutes maximum plus no answer because this is public comment not a debate. Would you in comparison of the two please tell me which you think describes a example of democracy better. Which enables transparency? Peru always had a formal meeting every other Monday in which all votes were taken. The opposite week every Wednesday the city council held a informal meeting in which no vote or final action was taken and only discussion of issues were exchanged. It was informal and open to discussion from all in attendance. Under this administration all meetings were changed to formal and eventually will become only 2 meeting per month. Oh! this could only become possible after changing the pay of council members from pay/meeting attended over to a yearly salary which amounts to the same in total dollars as when they met every week. SWEET!
What about having the splash pad at 28th street park? Makes sense. Instead of pickleball courts have a splash pad. Don't think the neighbors would object.
9:47 I bet the 28th st park neighbors would trade pickleball for a splash pad in a heartbeat. The sound of children laughing and water splashing would probably be a welcome sound compared to what they have to listen to now. But no matter where they decide to build the pad it will be a popular spot for kids from all towns to enjoy. This should have been in the works the minute the pool was closed. And many thanks to the pool committee for all their hard work.

Proud to live in Peru!

Please leave Abe and Maud rest in peace. They weren't here long enough to really know anyone and if they were they probably wouldn't come back.

But sometimes we all need a bit of a refresher course especially on the right way to govern. Politicians seem to have very short memories.
Lois, where did you go on vacation that you met a politician with a memory?
You have to wonder how much "voting" is done before meetings. And on the phone vs email/mail trail.
What about having the splash pad at 28th street park? Makes sense. Instead of pickleball courts have a splash pad. Don't think the neighbors would object.

it is all done before the meetings by the rubber-stamp board less rodney of course.
