News Tribune - News - Local - Peru reviewing insurance bids

City will rent storage space for "too many" city vehicles @ $600.00 per mo.

Peru will purchase valve exerciser for 48,500 for water department

Peru will spend $210,000 per ward on streets next year

Peru FD still has unresolved issues as they are unable to mediate them successfully and it sound like bully tactics don't end with grade school.

PVAS will give presentation at city hall on January 3

The newstrib says a lengthy letter was read by a firefighter . Where can we see this letter ? They said they don't have a copy of it .

Lois: Don't forget we're going out for bid on another 3/4 ton pick up with snow plow. Spend, spend, spend. Not long ago we were looking to trim the budget in all areas and now we're opening our pockets and the money is flying out. Went from $125,000 per ward for roads (money which we don't even have yet) to $210,000 per ward.

I was at the council meeting and think that it is ridiculous that the council refuses to address the problems with their fire department . If they don't want to address Tom because of upcoming litigations that's fine and actually smart , but they cannot allow these problems to continue and keep growing ! Cpt. Rick Abbott spying on a fellow firefighter when he is on the clock for the city and apparently the chief allows this . Whats fair for one is fair for all . All those guys need to be treated the same . The past is the past . Let it go . Fix the problems in our towns firehouse .Please !!

Somebody needs to take control of the reins. We need leadership at all levels. We need to quit denying we have problems and look for ways to solve them. Our leaders need to listen to all involved (including ordinary citizens) and find the best and fairest solution for all involved.

I have an Idea!! Since there are never any issues regarding LaSalle Fire Department and they already have an ambulance service maybe LaSalle's Fire Chief can manage just one department that covers both towns because it sure seems like LaSalle has a chief that can manage and lead his troops.
It sure sounds like Jeff King can't manage his troops very well.

Why are volunteer fireman required to drive their personal vehicles to a fire scene anyway . Public Works employess and other departments drive to their building , warehouse ,etc and get in city vehicles to do their job . Police officers don't respond to an emergency scene in their personal vehicles either . And why is it that the rules all of a sudden change and then it seems like they are only intended for a specific person ? Not Fair at All . The mayor and council need to "grow a set" and hold Abbott and King responsible for once !

How come nothing was said in the NewsTribune ? Is this the city of Peru flexing its muscle again and trying to hurry up and quiet this down again ? It doesn't seem this is ever going to quiet down untill someone gets their answers and the city winds up in a MAJOR lawsuit because its refusal to answer these claims of harassment , intimidation and retaliation . There is only a small paragraph on newstrib.com that mentions what happened last nite . I guess the city of Peru keeps the news tribune under it's thumb too .

I was a member of Liberty before it switched to city employees . Those of us that worked so hard hand in hand with city officials to create the best and most respected Fire department in the area are ashamed to say we were ever part of this organization . The city has came in and took the upstairs which was Liberty's and built by liberty members for its members and families . Now Liberty has nothing and is nothing . It's meetings are jokes , the current president is absent 9 months out of the year but still remains the president and a firefighter . Appaulling ! The backdoor politics and shady meetings by the select few are an outrage to the great organization that Liberty once was . The city would never allow this in the past . The past chief would've never allowed this . this would've been taken care of at the first sign of a problem . Disgusting !

it's not "Peru , the leader of the Valley" anymore ... it's "Peru , the laughing stock of the Valley" from now on !

You people crack me up. So most of you get on this site to wine about problems at the Peru fire department. One person writes a letter to the city council and oh my gosh its world war two. Bring back liberty you say. Bring back the days of old. Here is the difference. if you are a firefighter in the area you know that the problems peru fd has now are ten time less then what it used to be when it was a private fire department. The difference is you people talk about back room deals and government needs to be open and honest. this is what your seeing, the peru fire department for the first time. The issue here is when it was liberty and the problems where much worse you never heard about it because if anyone complained, they were kicked off the department and there was nothing the city council could do about it. You people are all out liars if you think the problems are worse now. I promise you alot of firefighters in the area like peru fd the way it is now and you as residents of peru cannot change that. If they refuse to work with other departments then its a problem that needes to be discussed. What you have now is a cry baby who wants to get his way and his way only and his only recourse is try to sway public opinion becuuse nobody from peru fd will support him. You never thought about that did you? When will this person send a letter with all the signatures of firefighters from peru wanting all this so called change you think is needed. When is the big no confidence vote coming? Remember if this person tryed this during the libety days he would be gone. If this person thinks its so bad know and he has been a member for a long time then he should talk about the fist fights and pushing and shoving at incident scenes witnessed by other departments in the area. Oh no, you dont want to hear about that. For the first time peru fire is no longer a secret organization and its open to the public. You are just finding out now how one person can sucker the whole town into thinking the world is coming to an end. WAKE UP if things are so bad this person should quit. things will be much better with out him.

Thank you for your comment but I think in the "days of Old", there were no laws regarding employment issues and that has since changed. There are laws and they will be enforced whether you or I or anyone else likes it or not. You can no longer run a closed system and in the long run it will be better for everyone.
Peru has not been known as an open and honest community for a long time and things that took place back then are over and done with. Everybody involved in the PFD current problems need to wake up and see the world as it exists now, not as it was or as they think they want it to be.

9:19 And if you think favoritism and cliques don't exist in this day and age you are sadly mistaken. I've witnessed it at council meetings. If someone is considered an ordinary citizen and they bring something before council I have witnessed snickers and shoulder shrugging while individuals who are considered important get full respect. I don't know who's right or wrong in this situation but somebody needs to investigate, listen to "ALL" involved, and take appropriate action. This is a small town and people see and hear things so those in charge of our services are not necessarily always right. We have all witnessed questionable actions by all concerned in government.

Anon 9:19 Congratulations! In approximately 550 words plus or minus a couple you have stated that a 250 lb. bully at the fire dept. today is just fine because years ago there was a 350 lb. bully that no one heard about.
You state that we as residents of Peru cannot change the Peru Fire Department. Get yourself a good seat because if the Peru Fire Department is not directed to proceed with steps to correct the current situation you will see corrective actions taken with a push being made by the residents. The present political administration realizes why they were elected and what they will have to produce in the next year and one half to be reelected.
Now that you have issued all of you dares to us as taxpayers and financial supporters of the Peru Fire Department I would appreciate a response from you to my following questions? Recently the status of the volunteers was changed to allow the firefighters to become eligible for death benefits if this unfortunate incident would take place in the line of duty. At this time of all volunteers becoming city employees How did the Fire Department personnel retain the privilege of voting for ONE OF THEIR OWN as Fire Chief rather than a appointment of the Mayor and city council as is the Police Chief?
No matter how much you believe that the past and present environment of the PFD is justified the citizens of Peru are not deserving of a huge lawsuit but are deserving to have the procedures taken to rectify the situation and now it is going to have to have the Mayor take charge with a heavy hand immediately.
As a indication of the present popularity of the PFD and the way things are how did the recent drive for donations end up in comparison to other years? I understand that they are way down.

lOIS COULD YOU PLEASE PUBLISH THE LETTER WHICH WAS READ BY THE FIREFIGHTER AT WEDNESDAYS CITY COUNCIL MEETING?

Anonymous said...

Its called leadership......Mayor Harl.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:24 I agree with you. Mayor Harl has assumed the role of leadership in the Mayors position. Just recently he has taken two huge tie breaking votes of the Peru City Council to move Peru ahead for years.

Anonymous said...

Can someone Please tell us more about this letter?? I would also like to know if Rodney Perez has stepped in yet? I know that he was bullied by these same bullies just over the past couple years and quit the fd over it. If Rodney and this other firefighter have both been harassed and bullied by certain individuals why are they still there?

Peru Town Forum said...

Why haven't the Mayor and City Council stepped in?
The police in Peru haven't picked their Chief of Police so why is the Peru Fire Department allowed to pick theirs?

All the members of the PFD are now city employees and since when is that type of workplace harassment allowed to take place?

If it is allowed in one dept, is it taking place in other departments?

Isn't there a Police and Fire Commission?

Anonymous said...

Lois yes there is a Police and Fire commission but they are as worthless as the Mayor . They are suppose to do ALL promotions in the Police and Fire departments with the exception of Police and Fire Chiefs . This is a State Law . And it is my understanding the state is investigating this now in our town . The city thinks they can do what the want and not follow the laws , which has been proved in the past . The city of Peru will for sure be bankrupt after this is all over because they refuse to rectify the complaints made public . And i see a few getting fired and losing pensions !

I see the Newstribune did another article on what happened at the council meeting in Fridays paper but never put in about the letter read by the Firefighter . Typical corruption , the city makes them keep it quiet like it has so many times before . We would like to see that letter .

Peru Town Forum said...

I have the letter and will be putting it up soon.
It has to be scanned into my computer first.

I would imagine that if this is a legal matter and the mayor is aware of it, that he didn't want the council to make comments due to advice from attorney's.
The paper said he is harassed by other firefighters from within? I am interested to know who those firefighters are. Does this letter state who they are? I'm very interested to know if Alderman Perez is one of them?
If their fire chief is aware of this and did not fire these guys then he ( chief ) should then be fired.
