Peru Pages: Things that make you go Hmmmm. – Public Works Warehouse Lease

Well Brian, no point in both of us writing this us and especially since I do agree with your comments. What was more disturbing is that no could give us a reason for the "why" of this arrangement and I noticed that counsel made no comment.

He does not like to answer questions from common folk.
I had a conversation with Ald. P after the meeting and he said the "donation" provision will be in the lease. The big question is - what happens 10 years from now when we have a new Mayor, new Council, and new Clerk and they forget about the "donation." Additionally - since this is a month to month deal - what happens when the owner can no longer afford to "donate." Will the City vacate the property? I don't think so... once in, we will never leave.

If the city currently has too many vehicles to house in the building they have now, they should be looking into buying a building or constructing one on perhaps some of the numerous pieces of property they own because in the future this number will not decrease but probably increase. Perhaps the soon to be empty property on Water St. would be a good location for a city garage.

Dilemma: How did H.J. Tobler conduct one of the biggest trucking corporations in this part of the state at 6th & Peoria and this same square footage is not big enough for the Public Works Department equipment? Does anyone remember the vast amount of trucks Herb had and Peru's favorite old Plow Jockey, Ray Kotecki, parking them side to side and front to back.

GREAT IDEA!!! Put pontoons on all the vehicles for when the floods come.

The property that is going to be rented by the city is located at 2828 Market Street at the southwest corner of Peru. You won't have to worry about anybody disturbing them as I doubt that anyone goes very far west on Market St. which dead ends.

An old building formerly used by Zibert Trucking when they hauled gasoline to local dealers and more recently was used by S & J Electric. From what I have been able to find S & J has now located on Terminal Road.

Ideal, a dead end road with a building on it. How could you find a better hiding spot? Even the guy who installs time clocks wouldn't be able to find it.

Let me see if I've got this right. First, the Public Works building on Peoria St. is no longer big enough to hold all our equipment. Next, that department is running short of personnel (indicating you wouldn't have enough people to man the equipment). Now, the cemetery needs a new truck so Public Works will give them one of their old trucks (makes sense because you have no room to store it anyway). Oops forgot! I think that small pick up is being replaced by a 3/4 ton truck complete with snow plow. Now, where are we going to put this vehicle (remember we have no room left on Peoria St.)? I got it - let's rent another building to house these vehicles because we don't have enough empoyees to drive them. Rent? $600/month? Wait - no $1200/month with a $600 return. Does anyone else find this scenario not only confusing but a little on the ridiculousside? So many questions and no one to answer them.

The sad part is that yes it appears to be ridiculous and those of us who questioned this silliness were made to look like we should not question the decision of the council to take this action.
Ald. Ankiewicz believes that it is one fantastic deal that we just can't pass up. Dare we disagree with him?
Our council seems to be continually looking for ways to spend money. How many residents keep their cars on their driveways or sometimes even on the street because we have no choice. I have to say I have gone by the garage currently in use on 6th and Peoria and there is a large open driveway on 2 sides of the bldg with usually no vehicles there. And across the street at the Peru Twp. garage which is huge in which they keep one truck and the last time I saw it, the rest of the garage was empty. Yet we the citizens of Peru are paying for all of it through our taxes.

How does this make any sense ? The city ever since Mayor Harl got elected having been spending money on un necessary trucks and equipment, AND NOW WE NEED TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $600 PER MONTH TO STORE THEM ?

What is wrong with this picture?

Amazing isn't , all of you that voted for and supported Mayor Harl are seeing the man is draining this city dry and is out for his OWN POCKET AND HIS BUDDIES.
(I guess the supporters are happy , right? i.e.
taxes have gone up, sewer rates have gone up, and more to come)

When will you all wake up and vote to change this spend thrifting of this Mayor ??????????????????????????

Yes, the mayor is partially responsible for what is going on in this city but, remember the 8 aldermen that sit on your council do the voting and decision making. They are all responsible for the things that are going on in our town.

This is what happens when a city's infrastructure is neglected for decades. The city building on Peoria Street has an asbestos problem and the ceiling falls on occasion. The garage is dark and basement floods. The restrooms are in such a condition I dare say few tax payers would consider using them.
I find it simply amazing city workers aren't denting truck and machine or knocking holes in walls due to the limited area they have to move equipment around. I have been in that building in the middle of the night when all the trucks and equipment are packed in there so tight I couldn't walk in between the trucks.
Back in the 80's and 90's when times were good the city should have been building a city complex for all the public works departments. The tax payer would have gotten more bang for their buck. But we do have an airport!
Would you like to talk about the police department next?
This mayor has a lot of catching up to do. The sew project on the south end of town was just the tip of the iceberg. Also, just as a little aside to all the above problems, Peru water still tastes and smells bad.
