This is a Democracy and This Post Sums it Up For Many

Written by an anonymous poster that speaks for many people of Peru

I am very happy that the City Alderman voted NO to this event. Their job is to listen to the public and vote according to the wishes of the residents of their ward. The residents clearly stated that they do not want the event and the alderman appropriately represented the comments of their respective wards. This is a Democratic society and the majority rules. Mr. Rodriquez, if your event is so important to you, by all means, please find a city that welcomes you and your fellow participants. I have read the comments posted on the News Trib and if I understand you correctly, you have threatened to say that "this is not over yet." Did I hear that you brought your lawyer to intimidate us further? That attitude does not come off as "welcoming" to me. I do not consider myself small minded, but rather an individual expressing my strong opinion against something I do not believe in. I will continue to promote family friendly events in Peru that ALL Peru citizens will enjoy. I have to tell you that the visual I received from watching you walk your dog down route 6 with chains and tires doesn't seem very appealing as family friendly to me. How do I explain that life style to a child? Is that the norm on how we should treat Fido and Fluffy in the house? The norm in this country is to treat cats and dogs as domesticated pets and companions, not strength enhanced victims of their owners desires to compete and "pound their chests." As for the pitbull comments you continue to defend, I totally disagree with you on the safety of this breed. I just read AGAIN today that a "responsible?" neighbor's 4 pitbulls got out of fenced in back yard and killed a woman in New Mexico on Monday. ANOTHER sad story of a breed of dogs that are trained and kept for their strength for whatever purpose their owner's desire. Her name was Margaret Salcedo and she was only 48 years old. Can you imagine being ripped apart while you are alive? I understand that is a harsh visual that will upset many people, but it happens time and time again! A witness tried to help but couldn't even open her car door because the dogs were attacking the car. Police shot one of the dogs and it was able to still run away. ONCE AGAIN, the responsible owners can't understand how this could happen. NOBODY is in full control of any animal. PERIOD. I don't care how behaved you think your "pet" is. I will take my SMALL MIND, MY VOICE, and MY VOTE to our alderman any day to say what I believe is best for my community that I live in, work in, and shop in EVERYDAY. Once again, I have to thank our Alderman and Mayor for standing up to the beliefs of the Citizens of Peru. They did their job well!

As a Peru resident this post does not speak for me! What about the idarod and those dogs pulling sleds, what about horse carriage racing, what about all the circus animals that were at our airport. Sounds to me that some people of Peru have this perception of Mike Vick coming to town to have dog fights! I know nothing about this dog pulling, and have never heard of it until now, but Peru is losing a small amount of revenue from not having this event and it puts out the perception of Peru that outsiders are not welcome! Get informed! p.s. I have no clue who Mr. rodriguez is

The people who have been elected to represent the citizens of this town have made the decision. The aldermen and city officials have been contacted by the people of Peru letting them know how they felt and that is how they voted. I'm sorry you don't agree but that happens to be the way our government works. I have learned more about dog pulling as it is used in the pulls and I don't agree that Alaskan dog teams and horse carriage racing are in the same category. Let it rest, the decision has been made and Peru has more important things to deal with.

I would just like to point out that someone needs to mention that there is a difference between the United Kennel Club (referred to by those wishing to hold the event) and the American Kennel Club. I believe that the American Kennel Club (AKC) is what people often think of as the reputable source of information for animals. I hope the event organizers were not trying to mislead the public.

It would be nice if Peru were ruled by law instead of majority opinion. However since finding Peru's ordinances is difficult, I suppose majority opinion and the whims of the city fathers will have to suffice.

Some day it would be nice if their website was user-friendly and showed more than just the subdivision and zoning ordinances. Unless that is all there truly is...

I see it's official that the county and Dimmick school have filed suit against Peru regarding the TIF. Read the article in today's Tribune.

To post 11:29. I have viewed, in detail, the ordinances of the City of Peru online. And I mean "extreme detail" in regards to a separate issue involving my property. I was able to find my answers in a very clear manner. My job also requires review of ordinances of other cities for various purposes. In comparison, Peru has outstanding references to their ordinances on their website. Link to their web page and click on City Government. Select code of ordinances. The software even has a search field for the topic that you are researching. I don't find the search field very often when I review ordinances of surrounding cities. I also believe that a very simple phone call to the City would resolve any questions you have. As for your comment about the "whims of the city fathers" I can't imagine how you came to that conclusion. I assume you have read blogs if you are on this one. I also assume you are somewhat internet capable and have read the News Tribune comment field in regards to this event. The citizens of Peru, where the park in question is located in case you didn't know, strongly voiced their opposition to this event and the alderman responded accordingly. As for your comment, "ruled by law" vs "majority opinion", I believe the City has an attorney. If you have concerns or questions, maybe you should contact him.

Lois, regarding the issue of the Holiday Inn Express TIF. What is the history behind Dimmick and Peru involving what used to be farm land? Why did Peru turn that property over to Dimmick to begin with? Could you possibly make this a heading in order to get some feedback?

for the misinformed in this blog. the AKC is the American Kennel Club and the UKC is the United Kennel Club. both are dog registries and only dogs can be registered - not humans. they are not clubs you as a human can "join." however, there are local kennel clubs all over the US that individuals can join and they host events for both the AKC and UKC. these breed clubs in either registry host events, sanctioned by the AKC and the UKC ranging from junior handling in conformation, health checks, weight pulls, conformation shows, hunting events, etc. through these events dogs can become titled as show champions, weight pull champions, obedience champion, rally champions, etc. both registries are thought of very highly and have MANY dogs registered in one or both registries at the same time. there are also a few of the more exotic breeds accepted by the UKC that are not recognized yet by the AKC. the AKC tends to cater more towards conformation, agility, and obedience. the UKC tends to cater more towards events like lure course, herding, various hunting events, weight pulling, dock jumping, etc. in addition to conformation. another major difference is at UKC conformation shows no professional handler can be in the ring, whereas at most "major" shows in the AKC the owners hire a professional handler. another difference is in the grooming of a dog for a conformation show. in the AKC all sorts of enhancements are used to make your dog look closer to the breed standard. in the UKC the dog is removed from the ring if any grooming products are felt or seen on the dog. the dog is to be show in its natural state. once again, i repeat - both organizations are highly thought of and what breed/activity you are interested in doing with your dog will help determine which registry you use. so IF a person were to say that the AKC and UKC have sanctioned events that include weight pulling that would be completely correct. and BOTH registries have highly respectable breeders, handlers, bloodlines, and dog owners associated with them. they BOTH also have the less desirable that use their registered dogs for illegal or morally wrong purposes.

i can understand fully if someone is not "into" a dog event that is approved and sanctioned by the AKC and/or the UKC. this is a democracy and we all are allowed our personal preferences. and i can understand how a community may not want an event that includes pets held at a park that does not allow local pets. BUT if they kick out one group of dogs they had better kick them all out - IVAR events, pet walks for charity, dog shows, etc. otherwise the validity of the integrity of the argument comes into question and then one starts to wonder if there is prejudice involved.
