Ald. O'Beirne Takes Offense at Questions Regarding the Dog Pull

Tonight at the Peru City Council meeting I decided I wanted some answers as to what regulations the city will have in place for the dog pull event. I mentioned that comments about the pull were definitely running against the event.

He ranted about the number of associations that were connected to dog pulling events and pretty much said how do I dare question their decision. I hope to see Jack at the event.

The city clerk did say they sent Mr. Rodgriquez a list of things he must do in order to get final approval. Will check for that list and get back to the blog.

Ald. O'Beirne believes that no resident should have the right to question what they (city council) do. I would like to inform Jack that we the public are asking the questions he should be. No one seems to know how many dogs will be competing whether it will be 10 or 50. I thought we the people elected our aldermen to think and ask questions and get all the answers before they vote on something. It only makes sense to know what you are getting into before you jump into it. Will someone please tell Jack we are not living in a Communist country and we are supposed to question our elected officials in a country that calls inself a democracy.

Jack will no longer be an alderman soon. And I don't want to hear, "because he chose not to run again." IMO, he humiliated the election process by the stunt he pulled last election. Let it be reminder to the remaining alderman from the "Ol' network" to stay honest and vote according to the wishes of the people they represent in their ward. The majority of the community comments are against this event. Bartley provided the event coordinator with a list of requirements and they should be held to that list. Actually, I am surprised Jack spoke on his own free will!

As an alderman, he should have replied with Thank You for you input, we appreciate it.
Sometimes I do dream what it would be like to have a responsive and knowledgeable city council.

Your making general assumptions when you say responsive and knowledgeable as you refer to all council members. Jack has been on the city for 24 years and has represented our citizens well. From a leadership position the Mayor could take control and issue directives or rules if he wanted to be involved.

The Mayor did not vote on this the aldermen did and that is who should bear the responsibility for the decisions they make. The Mayor did not vote on this. I only wish he had expressed his own opinion on this which is his disapproval. O'Beirne and Mertel voted on something which will take place when they are no longer on the council. Easy for them to do as any repercussions from their decisions they will not have to deal with.

I totally agree with you Lois. I was appalled at alderman O'Beirnes attitude once again. He is the epitamy of arrogance and repeatedly displays a lack of respect for the people he is supposed to represent. If we as tax paying citizens are not allowed to ask questions then our democratic rights are being denied.

And why didn't he express his opinion, again?

A good question

Lois, check out the Ottawa Times article today regarding their fifty year old pool. Recreation board president called for a united community effort to study ideas for the Ottawa City Council to consider. Think that is a possibility for Peru.

Good article. First thought as I read it was that they recognize that their pool which is only 56 years old has problems. Our city did not recognize or were not interested in knowing what might happen to an aging pool
They don't seem to be looking to the city for help but reaching out into the community for ideas and funding. We did none of this.
Ottawa made a beginning with the building of a very nice splash pad last year.
Also Ottawa is one community and we in this area are part of a twin city arrangement that gives us a few thousand more in population but we in effect have to duplicate everything city services or recreation facilities. It is not too our benefit when one city is trying to outdo the other.
We couldn't even maintain one ambulance service to service 2 cities so how could we ever get together anything else?

Would anybody have access to the price of repair parts charged to the pool (s) for the last 10 or 15 years. I would love to know exactly what was spent in R&M for those pools. Were all the R&M parts used at the pools or elsewhere?

Why do you ask such a question 9:39? Anyway, I would think you would be able to FOIA that information with the City Clerk's office. That would be some interesting information.

Sad to say I have been following the recent dilemma in Peru of having the cart before the dog story since it started and cannot believe it has gotten this far.

I do remember a group wanting to rush with their idea with the city council because they wanted to hold the event on May 14th. I understand that none of the organizers were citizens of the City of Peru? Why was Peru chosen as the local site not one of the organizers home towns? Now, today a comment is in the blog that Peru Police asked three people to remove their dogs from Peru Parks last night.

Why was Baker Lake chosen as the events site, and since the citizens of Peru thought enough of Mayor Don Baker to name this beautiful park for him, has anyone thought to ask Don how he feels about the park being used for this controversial subject?

If the dog pull is something the majority of Peru citizens want would they feel more comfortable having it in a fenced area such as Wiggly Park rather than Baker Lake?

In conclusion I would like to ask how much input was given to the Parks and Recreation Committee before this was presented to the City Council by the petitioning group to hold this event in Peru. Also what is the attitude of the committee in regards to being the host of this event? The committee chairman seems to be very negative towards it, what position do the other two committee members have? Being that the committees should do the heavy pulling and bring their homework to the council meetings and this homework utilized to make a council decision I would prefer to know how much homework this committee has been allowed to do? I hope this isn't a case where the dog got to wag the councils tail?

Asking about committee meetings, How's everything going with the Street and Alley Committee and its scheduled meetings? Come on guys those reports can't be falling out of the sky, although a strong west wind could be helping!

Tomorrow will be a interesting day at the Ottawa downtown courthouse. If I get time I might just go up there and claim $537,000 - I might just as well get it - seems no one else wants to claim it.
