From learning to living: Marseilles school converted to apartments

From learning to living: Marseilles school converted to apartments

Now this is impressive, saving a building and converting it into a more practical use, it just takes ingenuity and not sure we have much of that in Peru. Buildings just continue to be taken down.  I know I am venting about something I can do nothing about but when I read an article like this, I am thankful that there are some people who have a can do attitude. I personally have met people who own and live in refurbished very old homes here in town and my hat off to all of them.

Lois,
I know you want to vent about Washington school coming down but the cost to convert that building to an office or even apts. would be in the millions.
I think it would be wonderful to have something like that to service adults with disabilities, or even affordable apts. for seniors. So who will pay for this the same tax payers who would't support a referendum to build a pool??

It should not be funded by the taxpayers. If there is a need the "market" will address it.

Are the taxpayers paying to take it down? Who is building the addition to Northview? Who funds our schools?

Lois @ 9:34 - If there was a private buyer for the school I'd say sell it. But we don't need to spend many millions of dollars to upgrade the school building for housing that is not needed. At the same time, any unoccupied building will quickly become a hazard. Therefore the school is doing the right thing by demolishing it now - while they have the money reserved to do that.

We need to force this with private commercial buildings also. Look at the former ESDA building on water street. The city will eventually be forced to condemn that and tear it down. What of the buildings to the east of the RS 251 bridge - sitting empty for decades. Who knows what goes on there.

Empty buildings need to be dealt with immediately by the owners. I say give them a year to sell it - but if it continues to sit empty force them to demolish it before it becomes the government's problem.

We will need to deal with the old Tobler building once the secret project up north gets finished. I will personally oppose any attempt to sell that building unless the buyer has definite plans and financing to use it. If it is some one dollar deal like the Gourmet Burger Joint - no way!

Anon 8:18AM Sadly everything that is of any development is a million of above. Freighting isn't it. The older I get the less I like it because it raises my taxes. Taxes, utilities and insurances plus normal maintenance costs of labor and equipment are eating savings and pensions alive.
Still spending must be efficient, and efficient spending starts with putting apples in the apple basket and the oranges in the oranges basket. The city has a building already erected that should be studied for any other use if the finances are advantageous to do so. Those who will not pay for a pool are exactly who will pay for a building conversion if it shows a positive addition to the city,

Don't get into an uproar, this will never happen unless a private investor thinks otherwise, move on to the next subject.
