Last year Sherry Mayszak did the flower beds at the Fire Station and the Airport at no charge to the city.
As a volunteer she will continue to work on both projects, if the city approves volunteer help..
I understand that Mayor Harl is putting landscaping on the city council agenda for May 13 without resolution by the public property committee first. . Ald. Perez also has scheduled landscaping on the public property meeting on Thursday May 15.
The question now is how much pressure is the mayor putting on Ald. Mueller to do things his way, in order to bypass the public property committee chaired by Ald. Perez. The second question is "Is Ald. Mueller strong enough to withstand the political pressure of the mayor?" Not easy to be a freshman alderman with the mayor breathing down your back, is it.

Doesn't The City of Ottawa have a fleet of volunteers? Why pay to have this done when a gardening club can be formed. Lois, are you saying the mayor is forcing this into a meeting without committee? I understand he is the mayor but there is a reason for committee chairpersons.
Hopefully Alderman Perez and The new Alderperson will stand up to a BullyPulpit.
Personally I'm not so sure alderman Mueller wants to stand up against the BullyPulpit. I think she may have already joined.
Divi up that flower money amongst my neighbors and us, and reimburse my insurance company from all the sewer back-up so Farmers Ins. Won't drop me. We estimated 12,000.00 in damage.
Screw the flowers, Priorities First!I sure hope these administrators aren't that stupid to pay for that.
Why the rush to push this through with Peru Greenhouse? There is more than meets the eye with this deal.
Lois: Exactly what is the list that you have posted? Apparently it's a list of supposed flower beds we have in the city but what exactly does the city want done with them? In other words, does anyone know exactly what Peru Greenhouse is offering the city for $18,000? How many plants, any bushes, mulch, weeding, watering, trimming bushes that already exist, tilling, etc., etc.?

This is the list given to Peru Greenhouse, Specialty Services and TNT picked one up since then. When Bleck was questioned as to how many plants, he was somewhat upset that the question was being asked. He wants the companies to make that judgment on their own and give a price which I believe needed to be under $20,000.
The city is not asking for anything specific. There are probably some flower beds that need to be eliminated in my opinion. For instance one nicely maintained flower bed in Pulaski Square would be adequate. It is pretty much a park to drive by and no one uses it even though there are some benches in the park that are in need of some help. Does Veterans Park need flowers, why not some flowering perennial shrubbery and plant some perennials flowers that are not that dependent upon watering such as tulips, lilies, daffodils and some fall blooming ones. What about some alyssum that comes up each year?
Remember the fireworks, here is $20,000 what can you give us. Well now it's here is $18,000 how many flowers can you give us. What is wrong with this council, it appears now they think they have some money savings with the horticulturist gone, so lets just spend spend spend.
Before too much money is directed to Vereranws Park or money applied in the wrong direction:
What are the plans for a park which is mainly baseball and girls softball fields when they are no longer in use because of the high school complex and the Rotary Park in LaSalle. Presently it appears that too much money has already been put into this park as it is destined for a quick death.
This is what will happen Monday night: Mueller will say she wants to go with Peru Greenhouse, and Harl will back her and say this needs to get started now. Harl will say the weeds are growing and everything is starting to look bad. Potthoff will then say he thinks we should just hire Peru Greenhouse because we're already saving a lot of money by not having a horticulturist. Specialty Landscapes withdrew their proposal, and there is no way TNT will get it because of how Harl feels about Tom Riordan.
The reason for the change of city council meeting day is so some of the elected can go to the IMUA meeting in Springfield IL on May 15 and 16. Looks like a fun type of meeting with golf and meals and libations and awards and we hope some helpful utility info. too.
You know potthoff will give it to greenhouse since they do hid work at the YMCA
I don't care who they go with as long as their company resides in Peru. We need to start acting like Princeton and support our own city.
Lois, what do you mean this was the list given to two companies and the other had to pick one up? How did these companies even know the city wanted a price for flowers? Are all three from Peru? Was this on the city web site or in the newspaper? Will these questions be answered at the council meeting?
Predicting frost tonight so I guess it's a good thing Peru is behind on its planting of it's flower beds. Some of the flower beds that I've checked out appear to have been neglected and unused as flower beds for a long, long time. Why the sudden interest?? And why the big rush?? Isn't the saying "don't plant until after Mother's day"?? Just seems to be another trivial project that should be simple yet we seem to make it complex and want to spend, spend, spend.
What do you mean the business needs to reside in Peru? Over the past few years Peru public property committee and the rec. Board has hired everyone outside of Peru to do its work. R&R (lasalle) did the ball diamond work 2 years ago and last year, D&M (sv) does fertilizing for the parks and grounds, Yard Pros II (lasalle) did work on ball diamonds last year, Bleck buys his mowers from Joliet instead of Smith's, that's just the tip of the iceberg!
There aren't any of the larger companies that reside in Peru anyway! Greenhouse is Peru Township, Specialty is from Granville, TNT is in Sv, there isn't one of the larger companies that is in Peru! They all work in Peru but not from Peru
. It should be bid to the most competitive bid by several! That is good business!
The Sheriff (bobby) lives in Peru!
Maybe he will bid on it!
How come excavating, construction, asphalt, and infrastructure work isn't bid only to Peru companies? Because you don't get a fair bid then! Peru citizens ,some if you think you are so high and mighty! The world doesn't evolve around your crappy town! Get down off your high horse. There's a reason you aren't the leader of the valley anymore!! Lasalle is passed you by far!
12:22 I have to agree with you, competitive bidding is the solution
You snobby peru people amaze the rest of us common sense folk more and more everyday!!! How special you must feel that you will pay twice as much just to have one of your pride and joy hometown businesses do your work!!! Everything isn't in Peru. You only get a good price by bidding it out to all the companies that do the work. Pull your head out of your cat poop filled sand in your filthy parks and wake up!!! Fire Bleck so he loses his pension since he admitted in the meeting he told the Greenhouse what Specialty bid it at so the greenhouse could beat it. How much of a kick back is Bleck getting from the greenhouse for getting them the contract illegally??
$20,000 and under is an excessive amount to give to someones buddy! Anything over $5000 should be bid out to anyone that has insurance etc. Corruption needs to stop. Let's all be honest!
Saw the Sheriff cutting grass at the southwest end of Peru today in full nuniform with badges shinning. Has he been contacted to submit a bid?
How come the lazy city workers can't cut the grass at the municipal building? Its on the flower bid sheet. Is Bleck and workers that lazy ? How do these guys get these jobs to do nothing ?
Has the U of I or IVCC been contascted to see if our locality has anyone studying to be a Master Gardener to help in Peru as a unpaid volunteer, or if either school has information that would be of assistance to Perus' planting program? The city worker who had the planting responsibilities is not a loss nor a sum of money to be used as a standard for financial savings as he should have never been granted the duties he performed. It is not rocket science to plant flowers and he sure could not plant trees. Because Peru threw away over $50,000/year plus benefits does not mean Peru saves money if they throw away no more than $20,000 this year. It simply means they are still wasting money but at least less money.
What is the educated guess in decades before Peru will have a swimming pool? Will it be long enough that a splash pad would be beneficial for a form of summer recreation during those years?
Most cities are building splash pads rather than swimming pools. Maybe it is time to find out why.
How many mowers does the city own?
You will never see a pool or a splashpad as long as people think that spending our tax dollars with companies that don't pay taxes in Peru is fine. Let the companies that you want to spend money with donate for it since Peru companies won't.
Hire college kids at minimum wage to be gardeners . Should only need 2 . If Bleck and foreman can't supervise them then fire Bleck and his foreman!!
What exactly does Bleck and his foreman do if they admit they can't control the help ?
Make the worker who wanders aimlessly downtown making $80,000 a year weed the flower beds. City workers need to work for their money!
Ya why do we pay a guy to walk around the same 6 blocks and carry an empty sack. All he does is throw the stuff in the street.
How much does the city pay for t-shirts for employees?
city t-shirts:
What is the cost/t-shirt?
How many does the employee recieve free before he has to pay for his own?
Does the city t-shirt have to be mandatory wearing apparel when the employee is on the payroll?
9:42 PM
I don't know about regular employees but a couple of years ago there was a discussion because the city purchased T-shirts for the summer help to wear and I don't believe they had to pay for them. Not sure I am correct but someone else may remember that each shirt was over $20.00. Can anyone help me on this one?
I will see what I can find out on the city employees.
Over $20.00? Who got the $10.00+ which the city possibly paid too much per t-shirt. There are a couple of individuals who need those 5x's to get the shirt over their head as well as fit the body which could have cost a few dollars more/t-shirt but they are city administrators not city employees. These shirts were not billed through Niemann Marcus or the IML Convention were they?
