Looks like the gardening volunteers will get the go ahead

A discussion tonight at the Peru City Council meeting initiated by Ald. Rodney Perez looks to be a go, starting with several locations in Peru including the airport, police and fire stations, Rotary Park and all planters located along Route 6. A core group of about 10 to 12 people has developed. The city will pay for the plants and the volunteers will plant them and mulch will be obtained from the landfill. It is also available to all Peru residents according to SPW Gary Bleck.

For the remaining parks, the city will go out for bids from any landscaping firm interested in filling in the rest of the areas. This list was posted here a few days ago.

A few aldermen tried to put this down by stating it was too late for volunteers to start working. I guess they were unaware that last night there was a frost warning.  So far I have weeded one flower bed and planted one flower plant. We have plenty of time to get this underway. Sherry Mayszak stated the perennials planted at the airport last year are up and doing well and she will add some annuals for summer color.

A Public Property meeting will take place at city hall on Monday May 20 @ 6:30 PM.  If you are interesting in becoming a volunteer, try to attend for further information.

What are the requirements? It doesn't say what any bidder is responsible for! How can anyone bid for that generic list? How many plants required? How much mulch do I need to use? Do I water or are college kids watering? Can I use city hydrants to get water? What if I weed a section and I looks pretty and a city mower blowers grass all over it?

How long do we have to care for plants? End of September?

1021. Peru greenhouse had no problem answering those questions with the "generic list" they were given

Is Hurl volunteering? He could use the exercise and fresh air!

Hope it goes better than the fireworks fundraising.

Anon 1021 Why don't you inform all of us to what questions the Peru Greenhouse was given and what were their answers? I am sure that all area plant services would do a professional job and also sure that all would prefer to have a guidline to follow within the contact they should be presented to sign from the city.
Past history of political manuvers have made many questionable of Peru business tastics.

I just read a blog that was blogged last night(under title about appointments made) that a person saw a fire department command vehicle, expedition, at SHAKERS in Ottawa on a Monday afternoon. Blogger wondered if this vehicle was being used for personal use. The blogger has valid questions. Was shakers a social stop WITH A TAXPAYERS VEHICLE BEING USED? How many city employees were with whoever was driving vehicle? WERE PERSONAL ACQUAINTANCES IN CITY VEHICLE? Doesn't the fire chief jeff king drive this vehicle? Did taxpayers pay the bill at shakers? Did we pay for gas? Insurance and maintenance. DOES FIRE
CHIEF HAVE A CITY CREDIT CARD? LETS SEE THE STATMENTS FOR APRIL AND MAY. Was credit card used at shakers? Is there a Liberty Fire Company ncredit card? Was donation money used to pay bill at shakers that taxpayers donate to?? Let's hear what the fire chief has to say. Will he come on this blog site????????

Did the person who saw the vehicle take a picture? If they did send it to Lois.

Just amazing how the aldermen will try to kill any initiative offered by Rodney Perez. What a bunch of selfish, spoiled children.

Glad to see that I was not the only one to notice that. I wonder what their real problem was, was it Ald. Perez or the idea of volunteers finally getting approval to do something. I do remember for many many years the CSO has been volunteering and getting praise from all the council and mayor for doing so.

Funny you should mention "Firework Fundraising" it just so happens this will be brought up at this evenings Park and Recreation Board Meeting to see if we can team up this year to make the 50/50 bigger than last year.
Last year I began the 50/50 Drive in June. In just over 3 weeks raised $4,000.00 in Ticket Sales.
That was a HUGE Success!!

I believe with City and Recreation Support we can double that this year.
Although I sense you didn't support this fundraising effort, you should stay tuned to see where and when you can purchase a 50/50 Ticket with a chance to win Hundreds, if not Thousands of Dollars:-)

Thank You!
Rodney Perez

Anon 4:46 must've been a city official. Keep up the great job Alderman Rodney Perez. If you can save us tax-payers a dollar it's deeply appreciated. If the rest of them worked like Alderman Perez I'm sure Peru would be the Leader once again. Until then it keeps spiraling out of control.

Was it 4,000 dollars raised last year? Newspaper indicated it was $400?

855 Small details, if it was 400 then the City netted 200.

What a surprise, another small mistake in facts. City collected under how much? Under a thousand? How much under a thousand?

4:06 here's a fun exercise. Show me one time Mayor Harl has ever admitted an error of any kind. Just one single example in 4 years.
No one is perfect right? It should be easy for him to admit to an error in open meetings act, contracts, budgeting, city resources, environmental issues, concert revenue auditing, ... Things that happened on his watch. Has there ever been one Mea Culpa, anywhere? I know posting it here would be lend the blog credibility, which he cannot do. But maybe he said it somewhere?
That is amazing. The first perfect Mayor. No wonder 35 percent of the people love him.

A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.
Just a quick question for you... How many mistakes did you have to make before you became Perfect?.. I'm hoping to make enough mistakes in life so I can become as experienced as you :-)

Thank You,
Rodney

Very true Mr. Perez and well said. In many instances a person will never take responsibility for their mistakes and actions and pass the buck to take the heat off themselves. These type of people are liars and not to be trusted. A honest person who has integrity owns up.

Wow! That was good Alderman Perez. Great way to shut someone up by having positive professional comebacks.
Hopefully others learn from you.
