Ideas From Princeton and Citizen Volunteers

You may read the entire article by Craig Sterrett at the N.T. web site. Peru has occasionally discussed volunteer efforts for the city but it never gets off the ground. The city of Ottawa has successfully used volunteers and now Princeton is thinking about using volunteers in the beautification of the city in coordination with the H.S.

What about Peru?

Peru has no problem with students returning later in life - they don't.Once gone they seldom return.WHY?

Sullivan's considers building grocery store on old Bassick site

Allison Ryan
Staff Writer

A former industrial site in Spring Valley soon may be home to a shopping complex anchored by a Sullivan’s grocery store.
Scott Sullivan of Savanna, Ill.-based Sullivan’s Foods, met Thursday with Spring Valley City Council’s finance committee to discuss details of the project, which would be built at the former Bassick Co. site on U.S. 6.

Lois Said:

Does this mean that people in the outlying areas and small towns would not have to travel to the larger groceries in Peru. Perhaps a chip out of our sales tax revenue is beginning.
Only time will tell and I think that our local Hyvee would still provide the city with lots of sales tax revenue beside being a good business.

Volunteers take work away from city employees. If there is something that needs doing, do not let skab volunteers fo it. Any work that needs doing should be done by paid employees. If there is more work, then we need more employees - not more skabs!

I disagree with you for this reason, the city workers do what needs to be done to keep the utilities and roads in good condition but it is the volunteers that add the extra and that is the reason Peru has so little extra.
Let all people who want to volunteer their time whether it is to help local businesses with promotions or volunteers to help beautify our parks and downtown area. We all realize a certain amount of pride when we do something in our own yards and it looks good, why can't organized volunteers in coordination with the city help our city look better and save money in the process.
BTW the word is scabs and that is a union word and we don't even need to use it in this conversation. Union workers will do nothing extra to make this city more than it is but volunteers will.
This is not meant to put down city union workers but is simply meant to encourage the people who are not union but simply citizens of this city take some responsibility in making it a better place

Lois - That comment by 11:20 a.m. is an obvious fake. This guy is the same goofball that is always complaining about unions on this blog.
He can't even spell "scabs" correctly.
Please don't let this nut fool you with his phony outrage.

Lois,
I am going to politely disagree with you and the others that say union workers will not do anything extra, but volunteers will. Almost every city worker I know, with the exception of a few deadbeats that should have been terminated long ago for a ton of reasons, volunteer for MANY, and I mean MANY social and civic programs throughout the City. Cops 4 Cancer, youth sports, IVAR, Fire Dept fundraisers, Parades, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy, religious organizations, telethons, pool fundraisers, etc. Those union workers may not always have the time to be hands-on for an event, but I guarantee that they are making donations when asked. Every single fundraiser that I go to are attended by other city employees. We know who to count on when we need help.

Thank you and I do agree with you on all the organizations that are using volunteers but that is not my point.
I believe there are many individuals who do not belong to any of the mentioned organizations who would be willing to help to physically make this a better looking city and more community oriented. Those you mentioned are primarily fund raisers and that is great but that is not what I am talking about.
Several years ago there was talk about getting people with green thumbs to help in our parks with flower beds and such and it went no where as no one in the city was interested in helping develop the program. Yet we pay a so called horticulturist nicely and nothing looks any better. Park benches look dilapidated, playground equipment is broken and most of the parks are crying for help. Downtown Peru used to have kids decorate the windows for Halloween but not anymore. That is what I am talking about.

Looks like I missed the city workers efforts which I do acknowledge but I did not mean to leave out as non caring individuals.

Every so often a subject comes along in which only negative hard feelings are going to be developed without any gain and this seems to be one of them.
In discussions of local city employees it is probably best to discuss work practices directly with the employee, their boss or your alderman or the council committee members in charge. In print, a word or sentence can be translated many different ways, often times not in the manner it was meant to be taken, and the end result is alienation and confusion rather than a constructive conclusion.
Lois your three comments above are all true and very good but it seems that there is always a few that would rather misinterpret them when certain subjects are written about than keep a open viewpoint. These few are the same ones that you, I, and all the city employees who will be in a ditch full of water when it is 10 degrees fixing a water leak or repairing fallen electrical lines in a sleet storm all night or plowing roads in a snowstorm Thanksgiving afternoon when the rest of us are home with our families eating turkey this winter would like to forget about.

It is a FACT that volunteers take jobs away. The only things volunteers should do is pay more taxes and demand that the city, county, and state take care of whatever problem they are concerned with. If equipment in the park needs to be painted, you should demand that the city take care of it. If they say they don't have the people to do it then you should demand that they hire somebody. When you volunteer to paint it yourself you are taking the food out of somebody's mouth. The city does not have enough people to do all the work that needs to be done. So the volunteers MUST STAY HOME and DEMAND A TAX INCREASE TO HIRE MORE WORKERS!
If a volunteer has the time to do somebody eleses job then they obviously are rich and don't need to work anyway - take that extra money and make sure the city hires somebody!!!!!!!!!!

1:20 PM Seems you are a Union lover--- Probably one of those overpaid do nothing union delegates who hires non-union when you have to start paying the bill.

I think we should use inmates at the LaSalle County Jail to cut grass, shovel snow, pick up trash, paint city buildings, and other things. Why waste all that free labor?

Anonymous said...

9:47 good idea. We already pay taxes to support the inmates. Why should they get a free ride?

Anonymous said...

Would the prisoners need to join the Laborers Union? Oh wait… that’s how they got there in the first place. :)

Excellent idea about inmates -- 5:54 AM Do you agree? Maybe you can sit and ponder on how to get inmates to set up a union and what the excuses would be for a strike after the first blister.
