I know it dosen't belong in this section, but people need to be told the truth about the school sales tax. The school districts are trying to sell this as a way to reduce property taxes when the law contains no such provisions. They are trying to say it is fair when the poor end up paying a larger percentage of their money. They also don't mention that the state gets to keep 2% and the stores get to keep 1.75% of the money collected. It is also a way to avoid the referendum requirments for large construction projects. All is all - this is a bad law designed for one thing only - spend money unnecessary construction projects. Just look at who the supporters are - out of town unions!

Peru should not have 8.5% sales tax. Please vote NO on Tuesday.

this is a sham. We can't allow this to happen. You must vote NO!

Peru should not have 7.5% sales tax and would not if it wasn't for one man's vote, Mayor Scott Harl.
Presently he will not have to personally cast a ballot again as he has guaranteed his puppet, Mike Radke, two more years on the council without a ward to represent but with a vote. You can rest assured that Radke will be told by you know who on how to vote.
The general line of thought was that this was going to be the administration that was sworn to cut costs. As the old man said when dealing with a politician "Ask them to put it on paper with their signature".

I am not union and still voting yes. One has to learn to pay in order to receive.

To 5:56 p.m. - I can't agree more with you concerning the first sentence of your comment.
Thank you Mayor Harl for having the courage and strength to fight the fight to improve our streets and underground infrastructure.
It was always pretty easy for previous elected officials (and some current officials) to sit back and ignore the critical importance of maintaing our mechanical systems while they continued to collapse.
Taxes should be kept as low as possible and used as efficiently as possible by the taxing body and that's exactly what is happening in Peru.
It's easy to scream about high taxes without providing an alternative to fund our societies needs.
Fortunately for the citizens of Peru, "high taxes" are not a problem.

With elections coming up why doesn't Radke have to run for office in the ward he is living in? Peru reduced the cost of having ten aldermen to eight years ago. Why would anyone needlessly raise the payroll to nine? Eight aldermen plus the Mayors vote, if needed in case of a tie, should be sufficient. Ottawa, a city twice as big as Peru which is not home rule has a Mayor and only four commissioners.

Weve got too many aldermen, now who are not smart enough to reason things out. Less is better.

Anon 8:34 Peru's taxes have increased and it now has the highest sales tax in the area and the most waste of tax monies in the area.
Time to wake up the alarm clock has been ringing for the last 3 1/2 years.

I'm happy to see that LaSalle County voters have some sense. Vickrey defeated!... One Cent "For the Children" defeated!

Stands to reason that no matter how much money one spends on their campaign advertising doesn't make them the best canidate! CONGRATULATIONS ANDY SKOOG!

Don't fool yourself. He's not paying for all those ads. Can't wait to see what he discloses for final cost from his old employer.

If the news tribune gave any discount for the ads, it would technically be a donation to his campaign and should have been reported to the state board. I would suggest making a call. Lois or Brian could probably get you the number for the board of elections.

9:25 p.m. Agree with you! I personally know what the price is for ads because I used the news tribune twice! And the price was outrageous for a small ad. Imagine the price for 1/2 a page and a full page, and a couple ads on different pages for the same day, and a 8 by 10 flyer! I wonder how much $$$$ from candidates donated themselves to non-profits, etc... Those types of donations is meaningful to me! I'll STOP, DON'T WANT TO GET STARTED! This election is over, can't wait for Aprils. Congrats to all who won, and hopefully you will fulfill your promises in which you campaigned upon!

Interesting reading if you go to the state board of elections website ( there is a link on Brians Peru pages blog) and find the info on Vote Vickrey. Just a quick overview and very low expenses to the News Tribune from what I could see , during the last few months. I do not understand why there would not have been many thousands of dollars spent on those newspaper ads since there were were so many ads run.
Maybe those who are more experienced like Lois or Brian might be able to explain it. I would think that if the News tribune gave him special rates, that should have been reported as an in kind donation to his campaign?

What is the dollar difference between rate of the two. When comparing remember Bob got the Vickrey rate and Andy got the Victory rate.
