April Election - Does Peru Need or Want an Alderman at Large

According to the News Tribune current Alderman Michael Radtke has chosen to run against the current alderman Sherry Mayszak and other hopefuls Megan Keeney and Samantha Nelson. The paper also states that if Radtke loses in the April election, he will then become Alderman at large. It was explained to a friend (by the city clerk) that it was no different than an alderman running for mayor and losing and still retaining his seat on the council as an alderman.
I look at it a little differently. Is it necessary for Radtke to run against the others and lose in order to get the Alderman at Large position or would it be his either way?
If it is not necessary, he loses nothing but just crowds the current number of people who are running for that position and win or lose he stays as alderman. If he loses and becomes at large, it is just another expense the city has added, an additional expense compared to the alderman who runs for mayor and loses and there is not additional cost to the city as he just stays in the Aldermanic position. We don't add him as an extra because he already has a position.
There is another issue that has not been raised that I am aware of and that is the position of Treasurer. When Hylla took that position it was at a very minimum salary of something like $6000 per year but recently he received an increase in salary and an additional title beside Treasurer as Treasurer Comptroller (I think) at $24,000. Does this mean that everybody who runs for the Treasurer position runs and gets the salary of $6000 or the salary that current Treasurer is receiving? or do they run as Treasurer Comptroller with specific financial background requirements?

If this is indeed true with regards to Mr. Radke's position why would he run for second ward alderman? If he remains an alderman win or lose what motive is there for him to run against alderwoman Mayszak? It seems a bit deceptive to me.

As of Jan. 1, 2013 when the new ward boundaries, I believe, go into effect what becomes of alderman Radke?

7:01 PM

It is my understanding that he will remain First Ward Alderman until the April election.

Anonymous said...

I believe the reason all 29 county board members had to run this year was because of redistricting. Why doesn't Peru do the same?

Anonymous said...

6:51 He is running in the second ward to get rid of Sherry...it's as simple as that.

Anonymous said...

I think the State Board of Elections should be contacted.

Anonymous said...

I think that if he runs and looses he should be out alltogether.

Anonymous said...

So, let me see if I've got this straight. Whether Mr. Radke wins the 2nd ward alderman seat or not he still remains an alderman??? If that is correct I would have to agree with 8:00 above and that to me is disgusting. It doesn't convince me that he wants to be an alderman for the right reason - to represent the people of Peru. What would or does he have against a fellow alderman??

Anonymous said...

Hands down, Sherry will win. WHY WOULD ANYBODY RUN AGAINST HER OTHER THAN FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL AGENDA WITH GETTING THEIR FOOT IN THE DOOR TO WORK THE POLITICAL SCENE. Sherry has proven herself as honest and represents her ward in a civil manner. VOTE FOR SHERRY FOR ALDERWOMAN.

Anonymous said...

Why would Mike Radke run against her is the big question especially since he will remain an alderman whether he wins or loses.

Peru Town Forum said...

9:53 PM
Especially since he said he would not run against Sherry about a month ago when the at large issue first came up. Now he wants to, why? I personally believe it is because of Mikes association with the aldermen who are peeved with Sherry because she does her homework and thinks for herself and doesn't follow lock step with the "boss" on the council, in fact has frequently disagreed with him.

Anonymous said...

Really? For Alderman Radke's own agenda? Two months ago Mike told the News Tribune as reported- he would not run against the Alderwoman if she chose to run. " that was the Aldermans Agenda". Since then, the Alderwoman rattled the mayors cage and others within the circle of Harl so they told the alderman to take her out. It's clearly a win win for the Harl camp: the alderman beats the Alderwoman they get rid of a voice for the people. The alderman loses? They're stuck with her but gain a ninth alderman which would relieve the mayor from having to break a tie vote when he'd still have his Puppet Radke. This is their arrogant mentality, not realizing there'll be a new panel taking seats come April.

8:28 What I have been reading in the paper and seeing on the videos I am not convinced that any of the aldermen with the exception of Sherry and Rodney are on there for the right reasons. Time for the Old Boys Club to come to an end. I really thought this would end when Harl was elected, but was I wrong. As a matter of fact ,it is worse!

Anonymous said...

Is Steve W. campaigning for Harl this time?

Anonymous said...

ll:06 I think we were all fooled by the current mayor and Mr. Radke. The front they presented before they were elected is not the one they are currently displaying. The promises and changes that were to be made have been ignored.

Anonymous said...

5:43 I know that is not the same Mike Radtke that came to my door with a petition to sign.

Anonymous said...

I am interested in the entire council meeting from last week, not just what is on the blog. Lois, do you have any idea what the time frame is for them to put the video on the city web site?

Peru Town Forum said...

I cannot believe it is not online yet but I wonder if possibly that the camera was set to start at 7:30 when the council mtg starts and last week Mayor Harl interrupted the meeting by going into closed session which lasted over one half an hour. Does that possibly have something to do with not getting the entire meeting taped. I have the audio and if they do not get it online, I will have the audio put into a form I can put on this blog.

When is the last date that a petition to run for office can be filed with the city clerk? How many signatures are needed for each office and can a individual sign for more than one candidate for the same office.
Has Peru ever had a primary race eliminating the number of candidates to two when multiple candidates file for one office? Such as the second ward is experiencing.
As time draws near to make a decision which would be in effect for the next group of office holders is there still interest in term limitations for city council members and/or administration members (Mayor, City Clerk and
Treasurer-Budget Director-General Fund Administrator-Financial Adviser-Director of Peru's $40,000,0000 plus debt).

Anonymous said...

I still cannot believe alderman Radke is seriously thinking of running against Mayszak. Do you think he will eventually grow up and realize he's destroying his reputation by acting in such a selfish manner? And, if he is doing it because others have asked him to he should be smarter than following their advise.

Anonymous said...

12:04 I think stevie w has his hands full running for township clerk and alderman. kind of reminds us us someone else?

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:35 What reputation? I never heard or knew of Mike Radke before he campaigned for a city office. From his actions in office
..................................
I think a lot less of him now.
During his campaign The thought was that the council was getting a highly intelligent young man on the council what the council really got was a huge disappointment that appears to forget who helped get him there, who can't stand on his own two feet and a person who is not a highly intelligent young man in
political representation of others. .

One would have to study the job description and job analysis of the present Budget Director or past Treasurer to make a
decision as to what qualifications are needed to perform the duties of this occupation.
In all aspects of modern day city finances it is apparent that the position has become too sophisticated to be a elected office and must become a appointed position.

Anonymous said...

Get rid of the twp.

Anonymous said...

Just because persons are appointed to positions doesn't mean they have more qualifications. That's a fact! It's called favoritism with the possibility of scratching each others back. Due diligence should be taken into checking ones qualifications over other interested parties when making appointments. The whole landscape of a person also needs to be taken into account. I don't believe in government that one person should be able to make appointments.

SHOULD ANYBODY FROM ANY STATE OR ANY CITY OR TOWN BE ABLE TO BLOG ON THIS TOWN FORUM? Due to the fact that Peru receives federal and state money from all taxpayers?? If so, pass this blog site on.

The ambassador of Deer Spotting self appointed himself. I think that's a wonderful position. However, he/she must be busy with their spotting of deers because we haven't heard from them. Wait. I need to sign off now and read under the heading of blog topics of, ok I needed a laugh. Everybody should read because this is a busy time of year for deer.

1:17 I personally know of three people who read this blog regularly and even occasionally post on this site who are from Chicago and the burbs. They were notified, and it caught their interest because of transparency and other issues that impact their business organization.

I know it is followed in Springfield, and most likely Peoria.

1:31 the Deer Spotting Ambassador posted his/her sign off for the season on the fireworks bid post a few posts down. Sounds like he/she is keeping their head down during hunting season lol.

Mr. Radtke is not the same man who stood in my kitchen while I signed his petition. Never in my life have I witnessed someone become a politician as quickly as Mike did. Wait there might be one more!

Anonymous said...

Sherry Mayszak is an excellent representation of Peru along with Mr. Perez. In my opinion Mike Radke should be spelled Mike RATke!!

Anonymous said...

Ah! The Ambassador of Deer Spotting has left all a clue that he/she is more than one. "because we haven't heard from them" is a clue of elimination. Therefore it should be known that you are not a teacher since you have failed in being a Master of the Kings Expression. Are you a Ambassador of royalty wearing the double beaked hat to indicate that you are always always moving backwards or do you adorn the cloth of a common he/she?

How about Alderman "Dances with Coyotes" Ferrari and his small pets warning at monday's meeting.
Who says Ferrari has nothing intellectual or otherwise to contribute to this city.
He's on the ball!

Anonymous said...

I wonder why it wasn't reported in the news trib like Ferrari requested?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone remember the 100 year flood 06?07? When alot of homes flooded up In Alderman Ferrari ward? And the council meetings pertaining to this?? And the city was supposedly going to do some work so this wouldn't happen again. Alderman Ferrari, WHAT DID THE CITY DO? Did you as alderman work for your ward and the people who voted you in? WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME OF THIS ALL THESE YEARS LATER? Wait a second, they fixed it with pickleball court!!!!!!!!!!'. Our taxes at work.

Anonymous said...

8:14, I had to laugh. That coyotes issue with small animals has been in the news(tv), radio, newspapers, for over two years. Owls getting ahold of small pets too! Intellectual competency at its finest. Evidently thats utmost important to Alderman Ferrari. ILLINOIS VALLEY ANIMAL RESCUE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS, does Alderman Ferrari volunteer there? My daughter volunteered years ago there. It's a wonderful organization and could use more
Volunteers.

Anonymous said...

Everyone at the meeting thought the alderman was going to make a public apology for his behavior last week, which he should have. Instead he is worried about the coyotes. Too bad he was not worried about the people who live 20 feet from a pickle ball court. Those residents needed help from their aldermen and all they got was and big fat nothing. No help, no compromise, nothing , nada , zero, zilch. And the same from Alderman Radtke. Where was the representation from those two when the people who live next to the court needed them?

Anonymous said...

Their representation was by the 2nd ward aldermen 5:16. They originally turned to their aldermen and were pretty much treated in the same manner as alderman Ferrari displayed at the meeting. Since that meeting, which I believe they said occurred in June or July, there has been no communication what-so-ever between them.

AldermeAn "Dances With Coyotes" Ferrari recently spotted with book titled "Little Red Riding Hood"
His two peers and mentors, one of whom sits on each side of him were taking turns reading him paragraphs while all three stared sraight forward giggling and of all things SMIRKING.

Maybe they were discussing the movie Coyote
Ugly that came out many years ago- skimpy cloths, dancing, twirling alcohol bottles for drinks. No
Ugly people apply because YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN VIDEOTAPPING WILL BE WORKING AND
YOU DON'T WANNA BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD NOT LOOKING YOUR BEST.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to Wal-Mart to buy the coyote ugly movie, never seen it. Wait maybe not Wal-mart , because I'm very unhappy how they have been treating their employees. Does the movie coyote ugly have any common ground with what alderman Ferrari was referring to- animals?

Anonymous said...

The only thing Alderman Ferrari should be worried about is his constituents. If he would do his job correctly the smirking would stop. Please Mr. Alderman, start taking care of the people who depend on you to take care of issues in your ward. And that goes for Radtke to!

Anonymous said...

I don't know about any of the other wards but I have consistently witnessed favoritism in ward 1. Meaning, it depends on who you are before you get something fixed or taken care of. Be influential or powerful and just ask and you shall receive. Just care and report the truth and ask for safety and you'll get no where.

Anonymous said...

7:37 If that is true then the first ward definitely needs new aldermen. This favoritism has to stop and the sooner the better. If the two aldermen in the first ward cannot serve all the residents then they need to be gone. April cannot come soon enough.

Anonymous said...

Does Peru need the cost of a ninth alderman without any additional efficiency? Why don't the people making this decision reach out to the 11.1% unemoloyed in LaSalle County for input to this question.Additional expenses without honest justification should never be considered by government representation.

Anonymous said...

I'm a little concerned that the people Who already have taken out petitions to run for a political position as listed in the news tribune havent taken advantage of this social media site to do any campaigning on so far. MY QUESTION IS WHY HAVEN'T THEY? It would make sense that they would want to get their reasons for running, discussing issues to we taxpayers. Has anybody wondered about this? Lois, maybe there should be a section on this blog for this topic alone so we can ask questions and see who answers. The reasoning I'm bringing this up is because there has been many times that specific questions asked to specific person in positions and they don't
Answer on here. That in itself tells me alot about getting no answers. And the "call your alderman" doesnt work for me. What's to hide that they won't reply on here. AND FOR ANYONE WHO IS IN OFFICE TO SAY THEY DON'T READ THIS BLOG SITE IS B---/S------g!

Peru Town Forum said...

I do expect a few of them to possibly post to the blog. Do you have a specific question or questions you would like them to answer? I have met most of them but not all and would be willing to ask them if they would like to comment on specific questions.
Those you won't see are Mayor Harl, Gary Hylla, Mike Radtke, Tony Ferrari, Bob Ankiewicz and Jim Lukosus.

Anonymous said...

Lois, those four aldermen above are up for reelection in April, correct?

Anonymous said...

Since I have been following the city council decisions on the blog and the newspaper, I do not know how anyone could vote for an incumbent. Their decision making is pitiful, and so politically motivated it makes me want to scream. Where is the common sense, respect for citizens, and doing what is right for all that live here in Peru? Vote them out, vote them all out!

Anonymous said...

Here is just a few questions that could be asked: 1) How would you have voted and what would you have done differently than the current group in regards to the Pickleball issue, Ventura Drive intersection, Charity concerts, Swimming pool, Water Street Fiasco, Westclock Building fire cleanup, ?if they would have been against a new city hall when that was in the works, thoughts on tax increases, fireworks fiasco, signage for street improvements with Harls name on it as mayor that taxpayers paid for, all vehicles purchased that
Were possibly unnecessary, Etc.. This is just a couple questions.

Peru Town Forum said...

2:12 PM

All of those alderman are running for re election and all have opposition.

Anonymous said...

2:39 All very good questions. And most just need some common sense thinking. Charity concerts..not at the airport, venture drive....if it is hurting the businesses, no way put it back to the way it was, Westclox...call City of Streator for advice, pickleball...if it is disturbing the homes closest to the court take the nets down, swimming pool....build a splash pad for kids, water street fiasco... move the fireworks back to Washington Park like they use to be! Any other questions?

I JUST HAVE AN INTUITION THAT ANYTIME THAT A HOT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED OR A PUBLIC COMMENT IS MADE OR DISRESPECTFULLNESS OF ALDERMAN/MAYOR/ OR DEPARTMENT HEADS, ETC. IS UNLIKEABLE BY GOVERNAMENT-A PROBLEM WILL ARISE WITH VIDEOTAPPING PROBLEMS AND IT'S NOT AVAILABLE. FOR PUBLIC VIEWING BY SOCIAL MEDIA. WHO AGREES WITH THIS? I WONDER IF THIS WAS DISCUSSED BY SELECTED PEOPLE PRIOR TO THE VIDEOTAPPING APPROVAL, NOT BY ALL .

Can anyone explain when the tennis courts are being locked up? I assume the 28th street park one is to protect the pickle ball court which was not as portable as we were led to believe (permanent bolts were left stick up from the surface). However, I've been told Sunset court is also locked up - WHY??? Citizen owned, citizen paid for facilities are now being taken away - SOMEONE EXPLAIN PLEASE!!!

Anonymous said...

It's Nov. 27- this weekend temperatures suppose to be high 50's/low60's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOESNT COST THE CITY ANYTHING TO LEAVE THEM UNLOCKED FOR TAXPAYERS/CITIZENS TO USE! However those who made the decision to lock them probably don't exercise. Makes alot of sense doesn't it? What's the purpose to lock courts anyway??????

Anonymous said...

I would venture to guess that the courts at 28th are locked because they removed the nets and left bolts sticking up out of the ground, and now have added more screws for the 2x4's over the bolts. The reason the Sunset Courts are locked is because they had to make it appear that they had to lock both because of the new surface. Let's face it, this is just another throw it into the face of the neighbors that have caused the problems regarding pickle ball. Nothing more , nothing less. They could have just removed the bolts and left the gates open, but OH NO! So now we have nice weather all week and the courts are locked. Just another reason to make sure you vote in the April election. The first ward aldermen should be all over this issue but once again they are MIA.

Anonymous said...

The lst ward aldermen only ask for stop signs for the elite in the lst ward. The rest of the average people are ignored.

Anonymous said...

Why would the city create the position of Alderman at Large for a person whom the majority of the 1st ward believe that has not fulfilled campaign promises or good political judgement. From most you hear that Peru will have two new aldermen in the first ward, the same in the second and one new each in the third and fourth wards.

Anonymous said...

Not only unfulfilled campaign promises, poor political judgement, add to the list no representation for the residents in his ward. That is probably the most important of his duties as alderman, yet he ignores us.

Anonymous said...

The more alderman per ward, the better, they can kiss
Someones Fannie. We need alderman with some guts that don't want the glory. "No guts no glory." Any more petitions taken out since the newspaper article?
