Pave the way: Asphalt work to cost $632,500 - My Web Times

Pave the way: Asphalt work to cost $632,500  Ottawa decides to pave while Peru decides to wait. Peru took the advice of Chamlin and Associates and decided not to accept the higher bid while Ottawa chose to accept the higher bid and repair streets with the motor fuel taxes at a higher than estimated cost.

Are Peru's streets so bad that we should have accepted the high bid even though it was$416,854.46 which was 27 percent over the engineer’s estimate of $329,195. I assume the engineer in Peru meant Chamlin and in Ottawa it was the city engineer.

We all know our streets are BAD so can we be assured that by bumping our way through another year, the city will pay less?. Advanced Asphalt of Princeton is the high bidder on the Ottawa projects and Len Trovero was the high bidder on the Peru projects. UC was rejected by both cities. There is some concern that the number of contractors seems to be dwindling and if this is a trend, will we be held hostage for higher project costs..

The Ottawa project was only 26,000 over the prebid estimate while the Peru project was 87,659 over estimate.

Only $26,000 over the bid estimate. Just where do you come from with these ridiculous statements. DO YOU THINK MONEY GROWS ON TREES?

Great Idea to postpone I support the aldermen.

However we should be prepared with this Mayor and his contractor backing that the estimates in the future for ANYTHING wil be much higher then we would expect. The bottom line , citizens of Peru be prepared to get SOCKED!
That is what all of the mayors supporters WANT; HIGHER COSTS , HIGHER TAXES, HIGHER RATES,water & electric!

One only has to look at Ottawa tax rate to understand, When are the supporters moving to Ottawa?

I read the Ottawa paper for a lot of reasons and one is that they DO COVER a lot of stories the News Trib does not.
My point in presenting it was to show that yes we are not the only city with this problem and different cities handle things different ways. Don't you every think outside the box?
I don't want to live in Ottawa, already had that opportunity years ago and said no. But I certainly am interested in how cities other than Peru handle decisions and problems that are not reported in the local paper.
Your views seem to be consistently one sided and extremely negative. Sounds like you are a real fun person to have around. Maybe you need to set up your own blog so that you can put your own ideas into action.
And don't put words into my mouth, I never said the offer should have been accepted, but only said "what if"

ANON 7:03 You are a bitter, bitter person. Obviously you hold a grudge against our Mayor for some reason. That's your business but do you have to be so hateful and resentful. Many citizens were dissatisfied with our previous Mayor but didn't act like spoiled brats. Grow up and do something constructive. At least now you are finding out how much things cost and at least now things are going out for bid. Maybe, because we were left in the blind in the past you weren't as concerned BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T KNOW HOW MUCH THINGS COST UNTIL THEY WERE DONE!!!

To Both
The issue is "let the city council run the city and bring progress as they see fit". Openiness means NOTHING,CREATES NOTHING,ACCOMPLISHES NOTHING.
What the problem here is that you folks think that Mayor Harl is the one and only Lord and Saviour.
My belief is that he is a wolf in sheeps clothing that will do nothing other then take advantage of the citizens of peru by raising ALL FEES , TAXES, RATES and will DRIVE INDUSTRY OUT OF THE CITY OF PERU.
After they are gone, it will be too late , and guess what, we will be holding the bag. I wonder then if all of the supporters will be rejoicing or will they leave town also.

If you really believe all you have written in the previous post, I feel sorry for you as you are totally out of touch with reality and with the world today. Because governments from the Federal to the Local have so badly governed, that the people are saying enough is enough, now you are going to hear from us.
I guess you must be the same person who continually wants the people out of government. Find someplace like Cuba or maybe Iran where you will get your wish and you will have NO say in how your government runs.

People put you in office and they will always be looking over your shoulder as they should.

BTW, we still have the 45 million dollar debt created by the council and previous Mayor. You do know that don't you?????? And we should continue to let them run amuck! Sorry we can't afford that kind of governance. To quote you "guess what, we will be holding the bag" Guess what you have been left holding the bag but it is now empty because of what you did with the taxpayers money.

The rest of your post is GARBAGE!

What tactics are you referring to? If you have some facts and truths to back your stupid comments present them. Otherwise quit posting garbage that makes no sense and is useless. Our council, as you should know, votes on and decides all issues. So, if you have a problem address them as they are the governing body that got us in this mess we are in today.

I wonder why Advanced Asphalt didn't bid on our street project. I seem to recall Mr. Chamlin stating that they had just taken on a large contract with state roads and therefore probably didn't have the time for Peru. Apparently that was not the case since they took on Ottawa and are set to begin as soon as Aug. 17th.
