Pool Comments Closed Will Wait for Final Williams Report

Since there is nothing to be gained by any further mention of the Peru Swimming Pool, I will not post any "what if" or "it is not a problem" comments. The Williams report should be given to the city within a week or 2 and if they have any new information, we can discuss it at that time
Let's look at new ways to use and improve our existing park system. Do we need walkways through some of our larger parks to encourage adult use. Lots of people enjoy walking around Baker Lake, could we use Washington or Centennial Park to better advantage for walking or even bicycle riding.  Using the parks not for sitting on a bench but being up and about and being physically active.  Any ideas?

I thought it would be nice if there was a sidewalk that went all the way around Washington Park. Part of it has a sidewalk and the other is grass.

Have there been any more rumors regarding the sale of the Mirror Building? I think we should just keep it under cover until all the papers are signed, sealed, and delivered. It's been supposedly sold or leased numerous times already and none of the sales came true.

Interesting that you should mention "under cover" regarding the Mirror Bldg. On 2/10/2010 at the informal city Council meeting, during "public comment", a Peru citizen requested an itemized list of 2009 expenses on the Mirror Bldg. The City Clerk said that he would prepare a list. One month later the City Clerk was asked the same question. Four months later there still has been no information released.

Until the recent appraisal of $595,000 - the last appraisal for $1,200,000 which was done in 2005. It needs to be marketed and/or sold asap.

Would you sell the Mirror Building to a business in an arrangement whereby the city would continue to pay 102,286 yearly to Hometown Bank on the loan on the Mirror Bldg and the buyer would pay 51,583 yearly in that same year for a total of 153,869 dollars which is the total yearly payment due to Hometown on our loan
to refinance the Mirror Bldg. This would be for a 5 year time period.

*Under the above arrangement the purchase price of the bldg would be 650,000.

Lois,
Not enough information to form an opinion. Is the business that wants to purchase the property going to use it as a place of business, make an attempt to rent it, or try to flip it? I would leave this alone until the who, when, and why are known.

Peru Town Forum said...

I agree more needs to be known but some have voiced an opinion that the city does not need to be in the banking business and wondered how others felt. I do know it is a business that is looking at the Mirror bldg but do not know what kind and the city was not putting out more info and I understand as they have been burned several times in previous attempts to sell this "white elephant"

I've heard rumor that some of the summer help have had their hours reduced to accomodate the pool personal. Anyone else hear this?

Whats going to happen next year with the pool people? Are we going to have to find a job for them every year????

Anonymous said...

Why were they hired in the first place when there was a definite possibility that the pool would not open? Who hired them?

Peru Town Forum said...

The city claimed that summer help was needed so they (pool workers) could just apply for those jobs. How many were actually hired I have not heard.

Remembering back to the indoor pool and how the city reacted when the council chambers were filled with supporters of that venture. Also when the Hospital Board of Directors made an appearance with a plea for no building permit fees. And just a couple of weeks ago we had a roomful of people wanting the pool to open because they needed jobs to pay for their educational needs.
Three different topics but just fill the room and that will get you what you are asking for. Of course perhaps there were influential people in each of those groups.

Is the council going into executive session tonight regarding the sale of the Mirror Building or some other property? Does anyone know?

Your Beloved Mayor HIRED all of the pool people for the summer jobs WITHOUT having specific jobs for any of them i.e. last week three Girls painting One fire hydrant all morning.
Good Decision, Right ? Your tax money efficiently at work!
I guess we just need to raise taxes to pay for the poor decision and featherbedding.

How would you know a pool hiree from any H.S. or college student? I wouldn't unless I was told.
Do they wear special id's?

Peru Town Forum said...

If you saw girls painting, they were probably part of the pool group as previously most of the grass cutters etc. were boys. There seem to be lots of unanswered questions about the teens working this summer.
Why was anyone hired to work the pool before they knew definitely that the pool would even open? Was someone in Parks and Recreation given the responsibility of hiring summer help before they even knew if the help would be needed?

Where are the adult supervisors that were supposedly hired to supervise the summer help? I too have witnessed 4 workers doing a very simple job and another 1 worker handling a very complex job by himself. Doesn't make sense to me. And, on top of that I still see things that should be addressed and are being ignored.

Does anyone know what's going on with our ambulance service? I know we've been told in the past that they need to eat but is it necessary for 2 ambulances and 4 EMTS to eat at Applebee's at the same time (7:30p.m.)? It seems to me that this is a waste of gas and wear and tear on the vehicles. Couldn't they call in a food order and just one vehicle pick it up? Or, better yet can't they bring their lunch like many working people do? Don't we subsidize the ambulance service $4000 per month? I think this is a questionable use of our tax dollar.

There still is no leadership in this City or a POA.

I think it was Thursday morning I heard on WLPO that the LaSalle pool hired some of the Peru Lifeguards. How many was not mentioned. I too agree something needs to be done. The kids need to be told what needs to be cut and clipped/trimmed. I was at a graduation party at Centennial Park the grass was cut but what couldn't be reached with a mower was not. The trees had grass around them no one used the week wacker, some trees had vines growing on them... Went to Oglesby for a second grad. party and I hate to say this their parks looked better....Does the park board go to the parks to see how they look and what work is being done?
As for painting the lines and curbs does that have to be done every year?

10:38am and Lois
You asked: Does the park board go to the parks to see how they look and what work is being done?
Alderman Mertel and Ferrari are members of Recreation and & Parks.
I would think they would want to hear from you..

Lois asked: Was someone in Parks and Recreation given the responsibility of hiring summer help before they even knew if the help would be needed?
The Pool Manager hires Staff for the summer. Realize she would hire Lifeguards way before the Pool opens.
I hope everyone realizes she did NOT know the Pool was going to turn into this huge debate and was doing her job of securing Lifeguards for the summer.

Last comment: Shame on anyone who wants to speak poorly about Teenagers hired for a job and then being told their job has disappeared.

By the way if they are not supervised well working for the City then ask their Supervisors what the problem is.

Who is the Supervisor of the teen workers? That seems to be the million dollar question.

Peru Town Forum said...

anyone know who it was in years past?

It doesn't matter what happend in the past-it is the present that matters. It is the future of Peru that matters. It is no different than the Democrats trying to blame Bush and "drill baby drill" for the oil leak.

It is moving forward, providing leadership, and the growth/sustainability of our community that matters.

Peru Town Forum said...

I was not asking for names as that does not matter. What I want to know is
"is there a foreman in charge of the summer crew?" OR
Is the SPW delegating responsibility and if so, to what position is he directing the supervision be carried out?

Names are irrelevant at this time.

To the person that has a problem with the EMT's eating. You are 100 percent nuts. I don't know many people that work a 24 hour shift. You think they should bring there lunches and eat at work like most people. I've worked many places and every place I have worked has given me a chance leave work for a lunch break. They don't have that luxury. Unfortunately, you think that it is a total waste of gas and wear and tear on the vehicles. I'm the daughter of a firefighter and the wife of one of those EMT's. My family has been left in the middle of many family gatherings, meals and the middle of the night to go and save somebody else's property and lives and your seriously griping because you don't think they should have a chance to leave and go eat. You know if they got a call in the middle of that dinner they too would have had to leave. So next time you don't know what your talking about, you should shut your mouth.

We have been left in the middle of many family gatherings, holiday's, dinner's and in the middle of the night to save somebody else's property and life. That night they were having dinner it would not have been any different if they got a call in the middle of enjoying a meal. What's pathetic is it seems you have nothing better to gripe about other than its a waste of gas and wear and tear on the ambulance. Maybe like most people they should get an hour lunch for every 8 hour's worked. In that time of them being off duty hopefully it wouldn't be your family that might have to suffer.

Bridget,
I was hoping someone with a family member would respond and you did not disappoint with your candor and life experience.

Well said.

Bridget, we are all greatful to our EMT's for the wonderful service they provide our community but you also have to understand that questions arise when both ambulances and all 4 emt's on duty are eating at the same time. Wouldn't it make for a more enjoyable meal for them if they took turns? That way, if a call came in those eating wouldn't have to have their meal interrupted. Also, if you recall we read that they placed an ambulance in La Salle during peak hours to have a quicker response time to calls at the east end of town. How quick is that response time when both ambulances are at the La Grotto? These are just curiosity questions and if you have a good explanation please provide it because quite seriously it does not look good. What do the firemen do for meals (the ones on 24 hour duty)? I don't see the fire truck riding around or at restaurants. Honestly, I could care less how or when they eat as long as it does not interfer in any way at all with saving a life.

Lois,
What did you think of the article about cars not stopping at stop signs? It hit close to my house. You would not believe the number of people that do not even slow down let a lone stop at the stop signs in Peru. The people in my neighborhood have taken turns calling the police to report the number of cars running the stop sign. We do not get much satisfaction. Just think if those people were ticketed how much money the Police Dept. would have for equipment. But I guess that is not a concern in all neighborhoods.

ANON 4:28 Where is this article you are referring to? We also have the same problem in our neighborhood with the same results as you got.
