Peru Curb Program Shows What Does Get Done

Yesterday I picked up a copy of the Peru curbs scheduled for repair. Most of the wards were frugal with what needed to be done but I was particularly struck by some of the work to be done in the second ward represented by Ald. Mikyska and Ald. O'Beirne and what is not being done. It just shows me that not only did  Ald. Mikyska not visit the city pool before he voted to "patch and paint", he evidently does not know where the curbs are that need repair in his ward. Of course Ald. O'Beirne does represent this ward also.
A few pictures of the weed infested broken down curb located on Sixth Street in the second ward that is not scheduled for repair.

No matter which direction you look at this dilapidated broken down curb, this is what you see.

But some curbs do get taken care of if you live on the same street as the Alderman.

Yes this curb is on the repair list

Perhaps when the really bad section of curb deposits all of its gravel and residue into the sewer at the end of the block, it will come to someones attention.

Must be because there are no votes on this side of the street.

In 1958 Sixth Street was widened by the City of Peru but the men of St Mary's Parish laid the sidewalk and built a retaining wall. Donation of labor, hauling and use of machinery allowed this improvement to be made for less than $2000. I assume when the sidewalk was built the curbs were also put in.
Assuming I have the correct information that I took from a history of the parish, it means that maybe the city has never repaired these curbs since they were put in.

Seems kind of silly to repair the curbs without repairing the streets.

I would say that since the current mayor and friends have spent all of the city of peru's money and now the city is BROKE, I would suggest you keep busy at something the city can afford to do and quit agitating..
Maybe as you say of concerned citizens they could belly up the cash to solve the problems.. Not me I am satisfied as well as MANY of the city of Peru..
Help !, Mr Baker, but then you had warned us of what was coming. It's tough not knowing how to run a business.

Apparently you were not aware that on the day Mr Harl was sworn in as Mayor, the city was 40 million in debt left to him by the previous administration (known as the Baker administration) and then the city council added another couple of million on a tif to expand sewers etc northward, something the Mayor was not in favor of.
Maybe somebody should have explained that business thing to our city about 15 years ago.

Lois, what would happen if the city was not able to borrow from the electric department? How do other cities who do not own their city utilities do it? Did we really rely so heavily on the sales tax in the past that now with the economy as it is we must borrow?

You are so right Lois. The problem is that the previous administration kept things under their hats. They were not discussed at council meetings so citizens had no clue where our money was going. Today's administration is being much more open and honest and instead of blaming the past they are just informing us of the situation left on their plate. Some people just don't get that you can't possibly destroy our roads, infrastructure, pool, finances, etc., etc., in
one year. These things take time.

Surely the Aldermen in Ward 2 would not consider that little section of curb in greater need of repair than the crumbling one you show - would they? They also would not let their neighborhood influence their decision - would they? Also, good question ANON 5:29. What would we do if we didn't have the electric department to borrow from? And, what do the surrounding towns do?

Let me see if I understand this right - The lst two pictures are of curbs that will NOT be fixed but the 3rd picture (the little section of curb) is considered serious and will be fixed? NO WAY WOULD ANY OF OUR ALDERMEN BE SO NEGLIGENT AND OBVIOUS - WOULD THEY?

Lois If you think these curbs are bad take a ride around ward 1 and 3, check out the roads and curbs. Do the alderman actually drive/walk/ride through their wards and look at the condition the roads, curbs and sidewalks?

I feel sorry for the people that live in the older neighborhoods. NOTHING has been done to their roads in years and they are the ones that have been paying the taxes longer.

Who will be replacing the sidewalks and curbs? I know some towns have their own city workers replace the curbs and sidewalks, Do Peru's city workers know how to do this and can they do this?
I think it would be cheaper than hiring out and maybe more could be replaced.

As a person would drive the city , one can plainly see the power of politics at work.
In from of Mayor Harl's house, new sewers, new curb/gutter and new blacktop road.

I guess one could say that Mr Baker saw to it that this got done before he left office ? right !

Or one could say that Mayor Harl took care of himself first before any other parts of the city ? right !

Your opinion could be different , but does it not seem strange that politicians look our for themselves and the votes ?

I think there were worse spots in the city that Mayor Harl should have directed HIS work towards rather then infront of his own house... After all I assume he would vote for himself.

11:06 - The project on 7th street you are referring to is part of the sewer separation project which was planned and funded well before Harl took office. The street and curb improvements were submitted by Alderman Waldorf as necessary after the sewer work is completed. If you paid attention you might be able to speak with some sort of accuracy on this subject. You owe the readers of this blog an apology for being totally un-informed.
As for you 3:56 - Your abuse of the free speech provided to you on this blog continues to reach new levels of mis-information. You appear to be one of those card carrying members of the "Don" cult lurking in the shadows of anonimity. You are a sobering reminder of what can happen to a democracy when citizens blindly surrender themselves to a "false prophet". We still have guys like you on the city council too. For now anyway!

It was my understanding that the water and sewer project began implementation 18 years ago and the city had 20 years to complete the project. If my assumption is correct, how did Harl know about the 7th street project. Wouldn't the prior administration have managed this much delayed project right up to the end?
