Have You Tried to Contact Your Aldermen Lately? And Other News

It was recently brought to my attention in the past week, that one alderman was unable to be reached, phone calls or emails unanswered.  Also emails to the mayor received no response. I thought they were called our representatives here in Peru. And just for your information, this happens to be the mission statement of our city, taken directly from their web site:

The City of Peru's mission is to provide top-quality, fiscally responsible municipal services in a manner that promotes the high standards of our City.  (please take note of the last phrase)

I guess the pickleball players are definitely feeling their oats and come to play early Sunday morning with lots of loud yelling and even profane language, all heard in the neighbors back yards and even homes. The neighbors were given the wrong information by a member of our city government and were told to circulate a petition with neighbors  because the players really wanted to play at Washington Park and not 28th Street and this was a for sure.  It turns out it was false because the players now say, if they agree to play at Washington Park, that means they don't like it at 28th street and they do like the 28th Street Park. They sure have a lot of friends down at City Hall while residents continue to have their privacy invaded. How can these people sleep at night?

Anyone notice a new fence on the west side of Baker Lake Park? And here we thought all physical changes to a park had to go through the Public Property Committee. This is Peru and it all depends upon who makes the request once again.

The ESDA building will be sold and it will become a gourmet burger place.

Read the article in the Ottawa Times. "State takes action against Peru appraiser"
To bad the NT does not consider this news.

The city expertly will stall the neighbors. A simple lawsuit before the elections would have achieved the result they need and deserve, but they refuse to fight city hall. I know it is hard, but you have known the people you are dealing with.

There is too much reliance on others to fight your battles in Peru. Calling the Attorney General, going to aldermen who are bought and paid for, just wastes of time. Use the resources that are your right as citizens to get the attention and support you deserve.

Sounds like the person in city government gave the neighbors so wrong information. I bet the pickle ball players are having a good laugh at the neighbors expense.

I think it's time for the neighbors to sue the city.

I just hit the snooze button with this topic.

9:27 Too bad there's not a snooze button the neighbors can press to shut the mouths of the eternal adolescents running around with their muffin tops and delusions they are eternal jocks.

Where's the A of DS and his whacking sticks when you need him?

Anonymous said...

9:27 too bad the neighbors can't hit the snooze button on Sunday mornings because the loud pickleball players are out there making noise. I'm guessing you don't have pickleball in your backyard?

Anonymous said...

Are they playing pickleball at 6am? What time do they start playing?

Anonymous said...

Is this still a public park? What are the privacy obligations being located nest to a public park?

Anonymous said...

What are the courtesy obligations of those playing pickleball on Sunday? It's obvious they don't give a crap about their neighbors and the new Alderwoman doesn't have the common courtesy to call the neighbors back. It's obvious these people need to go back to kindergarten to learn manners and how to be considerate of others.

Didn't the majority of the pool funds come from a Charity Concert and a local business?

Anonymous said...

2:51 bingo. And guess who might want all that money back now after getting the positive press from it? If the proceeds were a little thin this last concert, how great would it be to get about 30,000 quietly returned.

If that happens, I can not WAIT to see how the fantasy writer guild at the News Trib will spin it. They really should write the next Harry Potter.

Anonymous said...

1:55 What are the privacy obligations living next a public park? What kind of question is that?

Put it this way, this is really close to houses, like really really close. It's also really really loud. If I went up to the house around Baker lake and got the same distance from them, shouted obscenities and broke Illinois and OSHA (yes they get THAT loud) sound pollution standards on Sunday morning banging sticks together, how long before I was arrested?

To get the same distance I would need to get in their yards tho. Someone would shoot me first.

Anonymous said...

No, twenty seven thousand of the pool funds were from the concert. The rest of the little over one hundred thousand has been from donations and twenty five thousand from fund raisers.

Anonymous said...

Vehicle stickers per year $35-50 per vehicle registration. Put $$$$ to pool. That's a lot of money. Do the math! Don't raise taxes.

Anonymous said...

That would be hard to cover up. Money already given to a cause and the given back to the promoter for the cause. Too many red flags to the IRS. Pretty sure if someone filed a complaint if this would happen the IRS would be involved. Who wants the IRS knocking on their business? The IRS has a easily accessible website to file a complaint. Takes about 10 minutes. But, one who files of course needs real reasons to file. A couple businesses up north a while back were raided by the IRS. Wasn't a nice site. But, got what they deserved.

Anonymous said...

Anon 4:09 Would you kindly explain the difference in cost to someones disposable income if you raise his/her property tax $50/year or charge them $50/year vehicle registration.
Either way it is a increase in living expenses being paid to the government which I don't like.

just like city employs running home all day with city trucks to see if contractor is spraying foundation or not and sitting in drive way 20 mins with another city worker in truck too !!!!! boy i want a city job !!! then home a little while later for lunch ! gotta get job like that ! somebody needs too put a lease on this guy !!! 25000.00 for what ? was told this today a johns place . couldn't beleive it but person says it goes on all the time .

Anonymous said...

4:21 It all depends on whether the business is claiming it as a one time charitable deduction or a promotional expense. As long as the year they get it back they report it as income, they are fine. Its like deducting construction as a business expense, then the following year getting a refund because of shoddy workmanship.

Like I said, if they have more expense this year to write off this income , it will be like getting the benefits of goodwill and charity donation twice for the same dollars.

It's just so curious that Harl makes the statement that the pool fund donors should be given the OPTION of getting their money back because of a splash pad decision. It will be highly unlikely that someone who was an small individual donor would request it back, but not as bad if a concert promoter said they still want to give the city the money, but would want it to something like little league. Then the donation to little league , or parks, etc ,would be much bigger for PR . One dollar, two style points :) it could even try to be done quietly, so the average citizen thinks these current oncerts are just helping the city all the place now.

All the while, the dollars would have really functioned as a slush fund for Peru Rec pet projects. Just watch it carefully, hopefully it will stay there and help build a splash pad. If it builds a new pickleball facility I will puke.

Often I have read in the blog that the Attorney General was contacted and the contacting person was ignored and/or dissatisfied with the end result.
Recently I relayed this information to a person who has extensive knowledge in public officials responsibilities. He informed me that the primary responsibilty of the AG is in a advisory role.
Could it be that often times people are contacting the wrong office for the mission they desire to be accomplished i.e. should those in LaSalle County be contacting the LaSalle County States Attorney and he in turn contacts the Attorney General for advise when he needs it or otherwise it is his baliwick?

I do know that one individual tried to contact the states atty and he did not return the call. Perhaps this is a Democratic political party thing. Just throwing out a possibility.

The differences is that people have more cars than houses. And sometimes people rent. We need to ensure we get the money from everybody. A better way to do that would be to require everyone to register the number of people living in their house with city hall. That way, we could charge $50 for each person in the city. That would be about $500,000 per year.

Anonymous said...

6:42 If you are complaining about consumer fraud, the AG has an actual Online form. It is their job. Lots of complaints on a single topic get more attention.

If a city is ignoring the OMA, there is a specific reporting procedure to the AG office

IRS also has a hotline . Multiple complaints on a business get more attention as well. But vendettas do not. Have facts.

The AG does provide many opinions. They have a small staff for putting together actual litigation.

There are other ways to bring litigation and sunlight to a city , and experienced groups that will help tell you when it is appropriate. But I have noticed a tendency to want to go your own way here and then complain that no one cares. People mock a blog but rarely make fun of subpoenas , depositions, interrogatories, etc.
The leaders in this city I guarantee will understand only legal action and outside press. The News Trib is NOT an option. Compromise is unfortunately not an option. They are Big Fish in a small pond and have only known the preferential treatment of this small town area.

Yesterday a post came in about the city constructing a new restroom not too far from a residential home and it seems to have vanished so I am rewriting as well as I can remember.
The individual felt that the city was constructing a restroom in their backyard and was disturbed by this.
I know construction is going on for a restroom but don't know exactly the distance from homes.
I do know this city has a very bad track record when it comes to informing citizens about events taking place near to their homes. No public relations dept. I guess, nobody in charge.

Anonymous said...

Alonso...we thought you got traded to the Yankees?

Anonymous said...

Alderwoman Mueller made mention of this restroom being constructed at Monday's meeting. She didn't say where, but if you call her, (and you're lucky enough to have her call you back) you might get more information about the restroom.

I wonder who the powerful individual was that got the consstruction stopped because the 28th Street Park neighbors have been begging for help from any council member and NOBODY helps them.

Anonymous said...

Call the superintendent and ask him where the bathrooms are being located. I assume he would know.

Anonymous said...

The flags for the restrooms are right off the path and yards from the backyard of the neighbor on the west side of the park. As of right now there is no work being done, so I am not sure if construction has been stopped or has not been started. Hard to tell. You do not have to call the superintendent they site is well marked.

The bathroom is in my backyard . I went down to Becky's office and she to me it was approved. Long time ago by alderman Ankewicz a d Mayzack I'm not sure of the spelling, she was suppose to get back to me but has
Not. My husband called the Mayor and he has not returned calls.

Anonymous said...

I asked the person that was staking something behind my house and he told me it was a bathroom . I then went down to Becky Mueller's office. She told me that this was approved a long time ago by Ankewicz and Mayczak. She said that she would see what was going on and get back to me. I haven't heard a word!!!
My husband has called the Mayor twice he has not heard back. We were not even informed of this.

The response you got from Ald. Mueller and Mayor Harl are exactly the response most people get when they know they have something unpleasant to deal with. Please keep us updated on what is taking place on the implementation of
a restroom in that location.

My understanding is that this is for the soccer players and that soccer only takes place about 1 month a year. Please understand that the soccer league is not a city sponsored sport, it is private just like pickleball.

This private group would also like to relandscape the park by cutting land standing trees and moving others.

It seems that the priorities of this city are very confused and that special people get special considerations while others get tossed aside.

Anonymous said...

We saw the flags back there but we thought that they were checking the sewers.

Sherry Mayszak said...

Former Alderman Mayszak here. Ald. Ankiewicz and I discussed a bathroom on the west side of Baker Lake Park. I can't remember if we approved it or not, but I can check the minutes. I do think a restroom on the west side of the park is needed, however, I know we did not pick a spot for it. I think the SPW would have that responsibility.

Anonymous said...

11:43 The neighbors of 28th st. park learned the hard way...you must go to every meeting the city holds to find out what their plans are. They will not come to you. You still have a chance though they have not started. The council had the chance to at least put this court on hold until they did their homework, but chose not to. Once again the city is guilty of poor planning, poor planning, poor planning. Contacting your aldermen will not help, that is if you can get a hold of them. Talk to the neighbors by the park, maybe the timing is right.

Anonymous said...

Sherry, Those same people that wanted those restrooms will now be complaining that they didn't want restrooms. You can't win. Soccer plays from March till November, last we checked that was 9 months. Those people that were mad about soccer players using their backyards need not worry. Residents that live nearby can use the public restroom to save water costs. Win for everybody!

Linda said...

Sherry: That's what I told Jill but she said she was told by alderman Mueller that you and Bob were responsible for the location. I told her I didn't think so.

Anonymous said...

Alonso...do you prefer soccer or pickelball? Yes we should let everybody know the number of people living in homes. Also have them get one of those forms. Also have the police go to every home to check. And charge each home a resident fee. Hope you continue to run for office. Keep trying your military state of mind is catching on in the Middle East.

Anonymous said...

Alonso,

Whats wrong with living in your car? Is that fair to tax people that live in their car?

Anonymous said...

I hope the restroom is big enough to provide shelter, concessions and a future pool.

Anonymous said...

Baker lake is a perfect area for a pool!!!!!!!

Sherry Mayszak said...

Linda, there is no way Bob or I could approve the location of a bathroom at Baker Lake. We would have to know where pipes are underground and where water can be hooked up.

I did check all the Public Property minutes that are on the city website, and there was no mention of a restroom on the west side of Baker Lake, but I do know we discussed it at some point.

I'm not trying to pass the buck here, but I won't stand for wrong information being given out by aldermen when Bob and I are not there to defend our position.

The SPW would be the man to talk to about location.

zLinda said...

I know Sherry but I'm just telling you what was told to Mrs. Kotowski.

Anonymous said...

We have to know where pipes are underground? Why would anybody have pipes located at Baker Lake. Its simple-you hook up to the nearby sewer/ water. Do alderwomen have to locate pipes before they approve a restroom? I would think not.

Anonymous said...

2:36 they don't have to locate pipes to approve a restroom, but they do have to locate pipes to approve the location for the restroom. Duh!

Anonymous said...

I vote for Baker Lake for a pool. Excellent idea.

Anonymous said...

Didn't the rec board put in a request to the concert for a cause for a restroom at Baker Lake?

Alonso Quijano said...

The City needs to encourage real sports like football (soccer for you Yankees). Like it or not, this is becoming the world standard for sporting. The other sports need to be taxed heavily in order to allow more soccer. The government needs to control this and align the US with the rest of the world.

Anonymous said...

AQ Like it or not you are in the U.S.A. and best learn when in Rome do as the Romans do. As for government control I have turned you into the Immigration Authorities. Put your ear against the wall do you hear footsteps. So long Al!
Do you think AQ is still in favor of government control and heavy taxes?

It would be interesting if the bathroom at Baker Lake is done by the same individual/friend of the concert promoter who built her pool house or sponsored any of the concert events. Who is building the brick bathroom?

Anonymous said...

I read in the public works minutes that city employees will build the bathroom at Baker Lake.

Anonymous said...

This bathroom project is another example of how this city works. Just as the neighbors of the pickleball court where not involved in the decision to locate the court in their backyards neither was the neighbor who will now have a restroom in their backyard. This is how the city functions. There is no planning or thinking beforehand. They just jump in, do what they want, and then are disturbed when people begin complaining.

Anonymous said...

9:55 They are not disturbed by their decisions they are disturbed that people are disturbing them with decisions they make and no one should question them. They are the powerful and almighty OZ, just like in the Wizard of OZ and now you can follow the yellow linked fence to Baker Lake.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know for sure how long this soccer at Baker Lake lasts? And is the restroom being built because of soccer? And was the only reason the fence was installed because of soccer? And do the temporary signs on Pulaski only come out when soccer is being played? One more, who lines the soccer fields?

Anonymous said...

723 The city lines the fields. I would assume the fence was put up because of soccer. I would assume someone complained about cars being parked there (isn't that city right of way property). Yes, the temporary signs are because of soccer. So are the two newest stop signs on Pulaski Street.
