Is The Mayor Blaming this Blog for his Failures in Leadership

One of the questions asked of the candidates was about the lack of festivities, festivals and community activities here in Peru, unlike La Salle and Ottawa.

I have rerun my tape and here word for word is Mayor Harl's answer to that question.
"It's all about volunteerism.  One of the problems we have here in town and I have to say this right now, the most vocal group is a negative group.  I talked to my good friend, Bob Eschbach, Mayor of Ottawa (he then detailed all the community involved activities that city has), and I would love to see that happen but once again, it has to start with the glass half full people and not the glass half empty.  We have a very large contingency and very vocal group of that.

Mayor Harl I would like to inform you that this group only has power at the ballot box, you have all the power in your hands right now to establish committees and ask for volunteers. To offer to get right in there with the private and business communities and work to get that community involvement going  could be your choice but instead you like to blame others for your failures.

the "negative vocal group" has a whole lot of reasons to be negative.

He sure has that name dropping game down pat.

I really have no problem with those comments, because once again he proves why he should not be mayor. Instead of trying to make amends with the "negative vocal group" he continues his bully mentality. Who wants a mayor who does not care about the residents! I wonder if the mayor of Ottawa would talk to his residents in that tone of voice.

Has he ever asked for volunteers at the meetings Lois?

Funny. I have volunteered to fill any vacancy on any board or commission and have never been taken up on it. Mayor Harl is all about "what can you do for me" not "what can you do for Peru."

Harl says there is too much negativity in this town. Harl says the glass is half full and half empty and asked why the glass is half empty. Mr. Mayor, you've overestimated the quantity of liquid in the glass. In reality, the glass is 2/3 empty and gee, I wonder why that is?

The people of Ottawa like Mayor Bob and want to work WITH him for the betterment of the community. Bob believes in his community, not his personal gains. They RESPECT him and they truly believe that he loves the City of Ottawa. Respect is EARNED Scott. I believe Mayor Bob asked people to help him get the garden city idea off the ground and he rolled up his sleeves and worked right along side of the volunteers. Ottawa is a beautiful city under great leadership. Scott, you wonder where all the volunteers are?? If you recall Scott, you dumped your volunteers like a hot potato after the election.

Anonymous said...

Scott will not ask for nor does he want volunteers. Did he mention volunteers at all today? He wants to keep every job for the union employees. Ottawa is beautiful and Scott could learn a great deal about leadership from his buddy Bob.

9:34 You are absolutely right. When Harl was elected the position seemed to go to his head and now he only values his connections with what he labels influential people. All those ordinary citizens who worked hard to get him elected (not just once, but twice) he's thrown on the wayside. Now he considers them a thorn in his side and refuses to even acknowledge them. He's sat at meetings and allowed two of those so called influential people to attack one of his own council men and he did nothing. Yet, when business owners sought his help he threatened to have them escorted out by the police chief. Is this the kind of man you want to represent and work for you? One who feels his connections with bigger fish is more important than his connections with the citizens of Peru.

VOTE APRIL 9TH FOR MIKE HART (X)

Harl only wants people on committees that are in the outer circle of his club! Harl doesn't want people on a committee that might open up cans of worms. HE WANT "yes men.". Well, guess what? This blog sight has done that!!!!!! Vote. Mike Hart for Mayor!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully TRANSPARENCY IS COMING TO PERU!!! Which hasn't been happening in the present administration! HART FOR MAYOR!! Where is victory Celebration for HART????

The pickleball question was asked yesterday and there were 4 different points of view regarding this issue. Mayor Harl stated that the majority rules, Mike Hart thought the process should have been stopped once the OMA was violated, Mayor Baker was one sentence short of getting it correct. He stated that the people that live there don't want it, he should have continued with "and the people who want it don't live there." Giordano's comment was that maybe they could continue to play at the YMCA. While this may be a good idea be aware that the kids are now being asked to leave the gym so the adults can play their game. So now the pickleball club has taken over the 28th street tennis court along with a Y basketball court. The majority does not always rule (there were roughly 80 kids asked to leave the gym for 5 pickleball players).

Hart for Mayor. After yesterday's forum the clear choice and the only choice.

Anyone who has 28 years of military service has my vote. Vote for Mike in tomorrow's election. He will not disappoint, he will be fair in his leadership of this city.

You know I've been thinking all the things you say (and Mike Hart agreed with)that Mike Hart is and will do, is what you guys said about Harl and Harl is doing what you said Baker did. I'm afraid you might be wrong on these three things so I'm going to vote and support the man who brought the city from a time when it didn't have the money to pay for fuel for the power plant to the leader of the county in sales tax revenue low property taxes and low power bills. I'll still take my chance with Don Baker.

11:25 Great comment. I am still undecided so my question is did anyone wash Mayor Baker's car in 44 years of service to his community? I am not trying to be funny or sarcastic, could someone just please answer truthfully?

Everyone makes mistakes and maybe more so at election time. I must say I learned from my mistake of working for Mayor Harl and I don't make the same mistake twice.
This time I personally got to meet and talk to the candidate before I decided to vote for him. Mike definitely has leadership skills and will make a great mayor. Thinking back Scott Harl let everyone else do his campaign work and Mike Hart is out there walking the city, meeting people and making his own decisions. He is definitely his own man and I admire him for that. We need him to run our city, looking at problems with a fresh vision. We have to move forward and cannot go back to what once was.

ITS MY OPINION THAT THIS BLOG SITE IS THE BEST THING THAT'S HAPPENED IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS. Taxpayers have been Mis-lead on a number of issues in Peru, and this site has opened that up to the citizens! KUDOS !

If you remember what Baker said yesterday about Pickleball - he said he goes along with the rec board decision. Well where was that thought process when the rec board unanimously wanted to move the fireworks from Water Street to Baker Lake? Let me tell you, Baker was at the council meeting yelling and threatening legal action if it was moved so close to his home. So Don, it's okay for some people to put up with a nuisance so long as it isn't you?

Mike Hart for strong leadership and MAYOR OF PERU!

Amen 12:17 and a special thanks goes to its creator Lois. Not only have I learned from this blog but it has peaked my interest in my local government and those who run it. They claim to have an open door policy and a transparent government but when questions have arisen many times I've had to "beg, borrow, steal" to find the answers. Many times those who should know the answers aren't even aware of the situation. Apparently there is either a lack of communication at city hall or a close your eyes and ears policy. We need a mayor who not only cares about promoting himself and patting himself on the back but one who will listen to the people. I believe that candidate is MIKE HART.

10:16 yes, I believe Bob Ankiewicz has both the public service record and the service in the military to get my vote.

Lois, you should have stated that you endorse the candidate that listens to you.

Thanks to all those who served in the military. However, some veterans didn't bring back home with them to have respect for others! Just because a person was in the service doesnt make them superior over anybody else. This is a terrible characteristic for them to display, which has happend at council meetings of a certain person. MIKE HART FOR MAYOR, THANK YOU FOR YOUR MILITARY SERVICE! My grandfather was in two wars and received two purple hearts, and not in a million years he would have gloated on his military service. He was a real man. PLEASE VOTE WISELY! HART FOR MAYOR!

1:49 You are exactly right, I had forgotten about Bob's service. Thank you for reminding the readers.

Quite a silly statement. I endorse the candidate that I believe will make the best mayor and nothing more. Mike doesn't need any input from me.

I think the problem is that all these years in public service, meaning the public is serving him, have made Bob think he still is in the military and he is the General.

You can't handle the truth!

To those who may be blaming this blog for whatever the reasons may be, need to get a clue and take note and see and admit that maybe their failures lie within themselves. A sincere person admits fault and failure when it's themselves that are in the wrong. I'm voting for Mr. Hart tomorrow as perus mayor in hopes that Peru will progress for the future for the generations to come. The political clicks have got to go. HART FOR MAYOR!

I am applaude that the word failure woul be used in any shape or form. The post shows that all candidate have mor respect the the words used. I can only assume you who wrote the blog on failure is one. I am pleased to be a peru resident under the current mayor. I havea family life and job that keeps me happy here. Maybe you dont and are bitter is seek of a beetter life. Leave things as is and maybe you can be happy to. Shame one you. Thank goodness my children donts see this. I am shamed for you. If you think you are so much better Missy ... why dont u run.

He pretty much said department heads do what they want and he encourages it. No leadership at all!!

A mayor is judged by the leadership and inclusion of the citizenry. Even the worst mayors will have people who have done well during their term, often at the expense of the majority Only in this backwater town do people cry out and pray their children not see the words of the opposition.
Thank God your children will grow up to think for themselves and recognize opinions are not things to be feared. With more inclusion, diplomacy, and compromise this town would never have gotten to this place.

To 4:04, WHEN A PERSON HAS A PETITION FOR SIGNATURES WHEREAS THEY ARE RUNNING FOR AN OFFICE OR POSITION AND THEY MAKE PROMISES FOR A BETTER GOVENMENT WITH THEM GIVING SPECIFICS, AND THEN WHEN RE-ELECTION TIME COMES UP AND THEY HAVE NOT FULFILLED ALL OF THEIR CAMPAIGN SLOGAN FROM THE FIRST TIME, I CALL THAT FAILURE! DO YOU HAVE A BETTER WORD TO USE? NO SUGAR COATING IT!! I'M VOTING FOR MR. MIKE HART FOR MAYOR. If Mr. Baker were younger I would have had a tough decision, I hope he enjoys his retirement. MIKE HART IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR PERUS MAYOR!

I don't think you understand that here in the U.S., we are entitled to disagree with each others politics and it does not make anyone a bad person. When I don't agree with the policies by one person and I see someone else who will do a better job, it is my choice to vote for him/her. That is the American way. It has nothing to do with you job or mine, it is just a matter of different policies. This election is very important to the people of Peru and how we will be a better town or we will continue to stagnate with the same people feeding off the system and not doing their jobs to improve Peru.

I think he means those who have cyber muscles and love to cry and complain. Much easier to do that than it is to run for office. I don't agree with everything harl does but I see what he means.

Peru Town Forum said...

After Mayor Harl declared No Problems with Our Parks on Sunday, today he found that a group from JCP wanted to help clean up the parks and several other individuals offered there services to clean other parks. Evidently there are people out there that see what the mayor does not. Thank you whomever you are for offering to work for a Better Peru by offering to help. It is a beginning.

In answer to your comment, I will add that age provides limitations otherwise I would run for office. But I can do this and I do believe it provides a service for those whose lives are too busy with work and family to otherwise obtain the information.

Bob always tells everybody about his military background. Constantly reminds us all. A true honorable man that provides service to his country doesn't brag about it. A true soldier gave from the heart and expects nothing in return. Bob doesn't fit that category.

I don't think it's fair for Scott to say that the blog is hurting his re-election campaign. It might be his inner circle of advisors. "Four University of Illinois truestees offerred their resignations...bowing to the wishes of a governor who has vowed to overhaul the board follwing an admissions SCANDAL that has jolted the state's most prestigious public campus.
Board members ..... Schmidt, ROBERT VICKREY, Bruce, and Dorris said they had notified Gov Quinn's office of their decisions and awaited his response. (Chig Trib 2009)

8:48 Well first off, you "kids" should understand a few things about volunteers taking away Union work. And also, I really don't see how Lois has ever stopped anybody from doing anything?

If you want to all just get along and follow what the unanimous votes of the council will be, with decisions made in lock step in private in back room deals, by all means plant flowers "kids" and get along with everyone. Welcome to Stepford.
