Mayoral Candidates at Peru Public Library

Very nice turnout of Peru residents for this afternoons question and answer for the Mayoral candidates.  Not really a debate because no rebuttals were allowed.

No surprises and it was interesting to watch mannerisms, paper shuffling and body language. Other candidates for Peru offices were present including Travis Nelson, Ed Mitchell, Sherry Mayszak, Mike Radtke, Justin Loger, Jim Lukosus, Tony Ferrari and if I forgot anyone, my apologies.

Mayor Harl brought enough papers to fill the file cabinet. Others a few sheets of information to refer to.

A question about Venture Drive was asked as: Will you readdress the Venture Drive issue?
Baker was not aware of issues and thought it was about street addresses.  Giordano gave a lengthy answer but believed a round a bout was the answer. Mayor Harl said it was fine and accidents had been reduced by some number in his file cabinet. Hart was also in favor of a roundabout and felt it was in need of further study.

There was a question about the Columbarium at the cemetery and no one except the mayor could answer that as they had no previous understanding of the issue.

Frequently issues came up which stressed the need for volunteerism with the examples of La Salle and Ottawa by Hart and Giordano. I think it was at this point that Mayor Harl made reference to the Negative Influences within the community instead of positive and that his door was always open.

I thought it was a good forum, it was nice to see a good turnout. IN my opinion...I felt Don Baker came across much better than the first forum.

Giordano killed it, nobody could match his speaking skills

BAKER HAD HIS 44 years!! He should enjoy his retirement! Perez, I hope your vote is with HART FOR MAYOR. Wonder if the forum was at 7 tonight how Baker would have done! Rebuttles should always be allowed! Anything can come out of a candidates mouth to make themselves look good! What should be done is they need to be put on the spot! IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC.

I thought Baker did come away better as well, but after the first debate I think the only way for him was up. Giordano once again spoke effectively, but way too smooth for me. Harl was on the defense for most of the time. Hart offered more detailed opinions and solutions than any other candidate. He didn't beat around the bush as I thought the other candidates did.

A good b*** s****** usually has decent speaking skills, that's why alot of instances a person like that is referred to as a bs-er! Not referrering to the 4:24 blogger! Hope this blog gets posted. Thanks! ITS TRUE MOST OF THE TIME. People see through that though.

Felt sorry for Mike Hart, he sounded angry and put off that know one agreed with his opinion of what was going on in the city.

Mr. Hart seemed to be the most effective to me as being qualified for Mayor of Peru.

Congrats to Mayor Harl this afternoon for finally expressing the opinion of many residents of Peru. Lets get on with the important business of the city and not waste time with pickleball, fireworks, operation promise and the bb gun club.

Mayor Harl should have impressed a lot of people today after the BIG rehearsal question and answer meeting at North Peoria Water Treatment Facility Sunday morning (this morning).

Giordano is full of crap. He offered very few answers with any substance and beat around the bush. He is trying to get every vote out there by giving answers that sound appealing in a general sense. You want to be Mayor candidate get involved in meetings, know the facts, form an opinion and pitch it to the voters.

@6:25, that being said by Harl just go to show that he doesn't care about the people!!!! A VERY VERY POOR EXCUSE FOR A MAYOR! YOU HAVE NO SHAME HARL-YOU JUST LOST MY VOTE! The issues Harl mentioned are extremely important.

Anon 6:25 I AGREE!! Lets forget about Perez and all the citizens of Peru!! We need to keep the focus on Big Union Contract stuff! All the youth who take part in the BB gun club, and Operation promise along with drunks along waterstreet don't matter!! We need to stay focused on what keeps Mayor Scott Harl in office. Screw the neighbors, and our youth who will soon be old enough to vote Harl out and someone who cares in!!! Go Harl!!!!!

I entered the doors of the Peru Library undecided as who I will vote for this coming Tuesday. The characteristic which I seek in the candidate of my choice is HONESTY. After hearing all 4 candidates, I believe that Hart is the person I would trust the most.
The incumbent Mayor at times foolishly talked down to people and seemed to be focused on a group of people who he wants to bully. The former Mayor showed up as a strong and alert 82 and through previous years of experience he will always have to be respected. But even he has his limitations and age is presently his. Mr. Giadarno is a fluent speaker who is too much of a politician for me. Mr. Hart along with his honest characteristic addressed many of the questions with common sense and good judgement. He also carries himself with discipline that would be accumulated in his 28years of military service. 28 years in which the necessary leadership attribute appears to have been obtained to enable him to perform the Mayorship of Peru.

I think Mike Hart would have done better if he didn't seem so angry about most topics and he seemed to make it personal and it never should be. I did support him but I think I might vote Baker because he only fumbled once and he didn't have any notes to go from that impressed me and Giordano is full of bs with his answers. tuff decision!

7:13 I liked the passion in his voice, not necessarily anger. It is a tough decision, I will agree with you there. Mayor Baker did a much better job today, and I know he felt bad after the Venture Drive question. I will not vote for a candidate just because he can speak well, and I certainly will not vote for a mayor who chooses to pick on groups of people who do not agree with him. But hey maybe at his rehearsal today he was advised to do just that.

Brain foster expressed who he is supporting for fourth ward alderman on his website, perupages.blogspot.com As a fourth ward constituent I support his decision: I encourage people in the fourth ward to check it out. Thank you

What to do about Adventure Drive at the debate?

1. Harl says - nothing - it's fine, leave it alone.

2. Giordano says install a round about.

3. Hart says re-engineer it and install a round about.

4. Baker says - where is it???

Anon 6:25 For four years Mayor Harl has allowed city time too be wasted endlessly on poor decisions with pickle ball, fireworks, operation promise and the BB Gun Club. So much time that it has been suggested that time has been wasted to cover up endless mistakes.
The Mayor was not intentionally expressing the opinion of many of the residents of Peru but was describing his inefficienes of his last four years in office.
In addition to the above sujects add in the $500,000 unclaimed bags at the airport, the concert Dalzell gave Peru in return for the playground equipment, his increase in sales tax with no referrendum and now the potential loss of jobs in Peru due to his meandering in the electrical rates.
The next important business in Peru will be to elect Mike Hart as Mayor this Tuesday. Harl is correct it is time to look at the glass as half full rather than half empty which his sad lack of leadership has not shown anyone how to do.

Baker seemed to be a little bit more in control today, but not nearly enough to run a city. Enjoy your retirement. Giordano said a lot, but really didn't say anything. All too general. Too many bad rumors and he scares me. Scott sounded angry and blaming everyone for his woes. Mike seemed to lash out a few times and that lack of control concerned me. I think I need clarity about his park supervisor issue before I decide. I was ok with Hart until that point. Also, how many kids do we have on summer payroll. did I hear over 40 something? if so, where are they and who do they report to?

Anonymous said...

Three years ago when there was still the possibility of having a swimming pool the summer help hired was 38. Two years ago summer help with no possibility of having a swimming pool was 41.
Does anyone know if a figure has been set for number to be hired this summer and who sets the number? Peru has a Human Resource Manager. What is her role in the summer help program?
Who does the interviewing and who does the decision making as to who is hired?

Mr. Giordano wanted to show his great business experience. He stated that he sold his business. Who bought it? I haven't heard of any extension of his business in the 90's. Perhaps this is another overstatement of his qualifications?

Anonymous said...

He didn't sell it. That statement is a flat out lie. Do you know of any Giordano Engineering Association in the area? After losing LaSalle as their most vital client the business could not stay afloat and they closed their doors. He then went to work for Trovero Construction and really screwed that one up. I won't go into details but him working for Trovero had hidden agendas.

@7:13PM I encourage you to reach out to Mr. Hart tomorrow before Tuesday's election. Perhaps you will get a better understanding of why Mike Hart may be frustrated with how Mayor Harl has run this city and get some insight on what Mr. Hart has to offer the city of Peru. Here is an FYI: When Mike Hart approached Mr. Hylla with questions about the city's finances, Mr. Hylla kicked him out of his office. As a citizen, doesn't Mr. Hart have the right as any of us do to ask the questions under the "Transparency" of the current administration?

I would like to add to 10:56 PM
Mike Hart is always willing to answer your questions and feel free to call or email (cell number and email on the upper left of the blog), he would like to talk with you, if you did not understand something he may have said today.

Was going to vote Hart, but he appeared agitated at the forum, doesn't seem that he handles stress well, what happens when the going really gets tough?? I also disagreed with his pool resolution, if Peru builds a new pool it should not be scaled back.

Anonymous said...

its obvious Mr. Baker is out of touch with issues in Peru. The most important being the venture drive fiasco. I can't believe he was thinking about the addresses up there. when was the last time he was up there?

Anonymous said...

The bloggers who presented inaccurate misleading and unsubstantiated accounts of the Giordano Engineering company and related activities that occurred more than 20 years ago should be ashamed of themselves. Here we see a blatant example of dirty politics-totally inappropriate in any election campaign.

Anonymous said...

Lois Hart is not the Mayor, Do you think he is going to take the time if elected, to answer all your questions? Maybe at the start, but after awhile he will be overcome with decisions, and not have the time for you. Who then will you back????

This is not about me but all the other people who have tried to contact the mayor. I learned shortly after election, he was pretty much only interested in those that could promote his career. I am concerned about all the emails and telephone calls he received from others in the city that the mayor chose to ignore and not respond to.

Anonymous said...

@7:51
1. Who did he sell his business to?
2. Where is there a Giordano Engineering Association in the area?
3. Under his watch was he not responsible for the City of LaSalle's water treatment fiasco?

Are you accusing the paper of writing lies? It's documented. Go to your local library and look into the microfilm on file and there will be able to discover articles on the issues that have been presented on this forum.

Now we have some understanding how Harl budgets finances. At the debate, he gave a simplistic example of setting up a budget of say $100 per week for groceries. According to him, if some weeks you don't need to spend the $100, then you don't put the saved money back into the grocery fund account for future week allotments, no - you transfer it into some other account you have - say the entertainment account or general fund. In other words, you rob Peter to pay Paul. I thought the City is supposed to be run like a business and not in a half hazard manner.

Sounds similar to the social security fund mess in Washington where the politicians steal from that fund also. This must be a mind set thing for BIG SPENDERS AND TAX MAKERS.

i know it is hard to lose your teddy bear and that warm fuzzy wuzzy feeling that that peru has seemed to offer. mike hart is trying to tell you issues we have and will have later on if you take time to listen and not get caught up in the hype thats why he is running. mike has nothing to gain or lose by running but WE do if he's not elected. mike could just sit back like everyone else and let things happen but he cares about what he's seeing and thats why he is running. big names aren't always the answer, it's the no names that get it done and if you doubt it just call mike and ask him you won't get his secretary you'll get him

Sorry about the late reply to your question about the Park Supervisor that Mike Hart mentioned. It is a part of our ordinances and our first and only Park Supervisor was Philip May sometime in the late 1950's I believe. My husband found it in an old city directory. By ordinance there should have always been one but as usual Peru picks and chooses which ordinances they will obey and which they will disregard as shown by the political signs this election.

As specially the signs in your yard you arrogant .............. you are such a phony lois

The signs in Lois's yard are legal. Learn the ordinance 9:01 before you become so vulgar and ignorant. Your kind of post and attitude is the reason people are becoming more informed and involved in government. Maybe your should try becoming informed before you comment

9:01 Did you mean the two Mayzak signs acording to lois two signs for one person are illegal 10:04 maybe you should learn the ordinance and I didn't see vulgarity in 9:01s post it said she was arrogant and a phony, I don't know her maybe she is.

(:01 Dont you mean uppity, daring to talk like someone important? Someone who matters?

Arrogant means someone who is full of themselves. I always use Harl as an example for the class, if you need to use it in a sentence.
