Why is the city testing for Fulltime Firefighters ? I didn't see any posting of anyone retiring . And why do they need to be an EMT ? The current firefighters aren't EMT's . Three of the 4 Fulltimers never took the class because they didn't want to plain and simple , the other is already an EMT because he already had that cert. This this just part of the big secret plan to get an ambulance crew in Peru Fire or are they going to waste more tax dollars by adding more firefighters sitting there all day because Peru thinks they need a Fully staffed firehouse when they average 1 call a day ? When are they going to test for chief ? Why should King just slide in that position ? it needs to be advertised to get the best candidate , not someone's buddy . It seems like the ones we elect are doing what they want for their personal agenda wasting our tax dollars . We're all just gonna wake up one day and have a Fulltime fire department , Fulltime chief , and a Fire based EMS . This is gonna cost Peru alot of money just to do the testing . Our elected officials think we're just gonna stand by and let this happen ? They have another thing coming , next election ! The ad was in tonites Help wanted section .

If they are trying to hire for EMS, they are going to leave out a lot of highly qualified people by tossing out anyone over 35. If you want FF2, EMT, under 35, and live in town, you are going to limit your available pool quite a bit. That won't necessarily get you the best qualified firefighters or EMTs.

Lots of good firefighters don't have an interest in EMS. Lots of good EMTs don't have an interest in firefighting. Each discipline requires a lot of training. I'd rather have a person who loves firefighting to be on the firetruck and someone who loves EMS to be on the ambulance.

wow this fire department is out of control.

I'm in the fire service and have no desire to be an EMT also . My fire training alone takes me away from my family too much as it is . Why does Peru think they are a Big City and can afford to may more guys or woman to sit there all day ? It seems they are getting by just fine now . Are they trying to be like Ottawa or Princeton ? Those towns have a larger population than Peru . I see us consumers that shop in Peru are going to pay for this when they raise their taxes again . Why did you guys elect Harl ? He seems like a liar and a coward all rolled into one . Can't stand up to his deptartment heads and can't keep his campaign promises !

Lois, could you please post the Illinois State Statute under the Police and Fire Commissioners hiring process. just like the cops the age limit is 35yrs old. there are a few exceptions. The CRANKY PVAS MEDIC has it all wrong. It think you owe it to the everyone to post the law.

I won't have time for a couple of more days to give more time to the blog. I will look up at that point.

Anon 3:48: I said if they were hiring for EMS, these restrictions would limit the pool, and this is true. They do not have to require applicants to be 35 or under for EMS. If they are hiring firefighters, they don't need to require EMS background. If they want both, you are going to limit your field of applicants quite a bit.

By the way, I don't work for PVAS and have no interest in doing so.

The law allows FD and PD's to set the upper age limit at 35 but the local police and fire commission can ignore this and not set an upper limit. Many cities do not discriminate by setting an upper age limit....the purpose of the 35 yr old limit is driven by pension laws....

No person who is 35 years of age or older shall be eligible
to take an examination for a position as a firefighter unless
the person has had previous employment status as a firefighter
in the regularly constituted fire department of the

municipality, except as provided in this Section. The age
limitation does not apply to:

Illinois, (ii) a fire protection district whose
obligations were assumed by a municipality under Section 21
of the Fire Protection District Act, or (iii) a
municipality whose obligations were taken over by a fire
protection district, or
(2) any person who has served a municipality as a
regularly enrolled volunteer, paid-on-call, or part-time
firefighter for the 5 years immediately preceding the time
that the municipality begins to use full-time firefighters
to provide all or part of its fire protection service.
No person who is under 21 years of age shall be eligible
for employment as a firefighter.

Your comments about the fire dept need for a new hire strikes me as "It is about time" that you have finally seen HOW THIS MAYOR OPERATES.

Transparent? right! or just for my buddy and a vote for self (Mayor Harl).

Hurrah ! Remember this when you change your vote in the next election. Harl must go along with all of his cronies (check the infra structure committee members for starters)!

The biggest waste of money right now is the FT firemen both in Peru and LaSalle. Then LaSalle has a FT Chief...Peru wants a FT Chief no matter what they say (even though he was voted in by his Liberty buddies prior to appointment by the city...wouldn't survive a real chief search since he's not academically or professionally qualified)...how can cities two and three times the size of Peru function with all POC departments? Amazing the waste of money in the name of the corrupt IAFF!!

It's Pretty obvious That Peru will do whatever it wants when it comes to Police and Fire . No matter the cost ! Look at all the shady dealings , and corrupt behavior that this blog has brought up and uncovered . A police chief with a checkered past that got him removed from a previous Chief job in Florida . Ignoring accusations of imtimidation and harassement in the Fire Dept. . Previous supervisor of the police dept. forced to retire due to sexual harassment claims for other employees of the PD (of course this was swept under the rug to keep it quiet) . Cash hoarding of Liberty Fire to sidestep paying taxes . An Assistant Fire Chief without State Certifications . An Engineer/Fulltime Firefighter that doesn't even have the state certification to do his job and he's been allowed to do it for the past 20+ years without it . Then not mention all the crooked and illegal activities that took place this last year with the Police Chief and Fire Dept . Peru already has the plan with what they are going to do . Also i'm sure they already know who they will hire when the time comes . Those decisions were already made in the backroom of city hall or a bar ! Sad that "the leader of the Valley" has come to this . So very Sad !

And we want to have the fire department take over ambulance services?

Rodney Perez said...

Lois, Please verify with any other Fire/ Police Dpt. An eligibility list is required to be renewed, then posted every two years. There is no plan, or talk of hiring a full time Firefighter for the next fiscal year. God forbid we have a permanent injury or lose a FF, the Peru Fire Department, like any other fire/ police department will be prepared and have the eligibility list to move on. As I stated, "it is required"
As far as one of the requirements listed as EMT?.. This has become a standard, and, or mandatory qualification for Fire Department Testing.

Thank You,
Rodney

Rodney, are you saying that this is just a list of qualifications that a new hiree must follow and that there is not actually a position open? That the list just needs to be published and you are not asking for applicants? Yet, you are saying that if you lose a FF the list is ready to move on. Why would someone apply for a position that is not available and may not be for an extended period of time?

Anonymous said...

For anon 4:07 many career minded firefighter/paramedics do test and get on a list that they know nobody may be hired off the list. Its an insurance policy for the city and there are many of times you may be on a list and then someone unexpectently retires and you get a call offering you the job. It also gives the candidates practice in learning the testing process which is done in the same way throughout the entire state because its the law. Lawyers don`t take the Bar exam until they get a job do they?. its the nature of the industry and the law in Illinois that a city with a fire and police commission must follow fire hiring police and fireman.

Anonymous said...

6:18 Sorry but I don't agree with your statement about lawyers. Why would they wait to take the bar until they have a job lined up? What if they failed the bar as many have the first time around?

Rodney Perez said...

4:07 Yes, That is what I'm saying! As 6:18 stated this also benefits the candidates. many candidates test and don't even get put on the top 20 of a department list, the more departments they test with the better chance they have of placing higher on a list. Anyone in the field of Fire and Police understand this procedure.

The Tide has turned in the Emergency Responders Field.

Years ago Firefighters just fought fires, and auto accidents.
Police Officers only fought and trained in crime and traffic enforcement.

Today.. our Police Officers are trained in EMS. If someone is having a heart attack, having a stroke, choking at a restaurant, or involved in a crash. The PD is usually first on the scene and can now assist and hopefully save a life of someone in need before the Ambulance arrives.

Fire Service- Just recently The NFPA ( national fire protection agency) has made basic EMS part of the state test to become a certified Firefighter. This is now part of the curriculum in the Fire Fighter 2 certification state test.

The public assumes that all firefighters are EMS trained already. I personally am not, for example..Last week a co-worker had a work injury just before I arrived to work, management saw me walk in and they called me over with one manager saying to the other.." Rodney can help us he's a fireman" I advised right away to call for an ambulance because all i know is basic first aid. I have seen, and heard many times when people in need of medical see a FF and count on them to be an emergency first responder with the knowledge and medical skills.

The new generation Firefighter throughout the U.S. is preparing and becoming educated in the EMS field knowing that if they want to become a firefighter in this day and age, becoming a paramedic is a must, because with building codes and standards along with fire prevention and education.. fighting fires are few, and life safety remains on the forefront of Public Health and Safety, therefore EMS has stretched into the fire service.
Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Rodney
