"Great Expectations" for 2011 and beyond

With every new year comes a sense of opportunity to improve ourselves and our community. 2011 brings with it an extra sense of urgency and uncertainty about the economy, jobs, taxes and of course politics in general. Right now in Peru there seem to be three seperate and distinct "schools of thought" when the discussion turns to local politics. The first group, of which I identify most with, are convinced the city of Peru needs an infusion of new faces and ideas on its city council. We read the City Treasurer's reports and we understand his comments regarding the deficit spending that has been the standard operating procedure for many years in Peru. We realize the seriousness of the city's financial state and we are amazed that the current aldermen continue to deny any responsibility for it. We prescribe to be optimistic in the new year, a new perspective, new energy, and new possibilities for the future. All in all a pretty optimistic view looking forward. The second group consisits of individuals who are convinced that there is absolutely no need for a "changing of the guard" on our city council and the current aldermen are doing a fine job. They believe there is no room for improvement in the way our city does business and they are content to continue to think "inside the box". And furthermore, this notion that the city of Peru is in serious financial distress has been overstated by those of us in the first group. These folks see no reason for all the clamoring for reform in Peru and they dismiss those who disagree with them or hold them accountable as "Troublemakers". In fact, shortly before the Mayoral election of 2009 Alderman Jack O'Beirne was so upset with me for reporting to the Illinois Attorney General's office that O'Beirne and Mayor Baker had knowingly violated the Open Meetings Act for the purpose of illegally negotiating a contract with TEST, Inc. that my pal Jack cried out in open meeting, "We got some real troublemakers out there like you Mr. Weberski". Jack did us all proud that night. The AG's office conducted an investigation which determined that O'Beirne and Baker had knowingly violated the OMA and a letter of reprimand was issued to the city. Finally, there are those citizens of Peru who have no interest whatsoever in the goings on at city hall. Chances are they have never paid much attention and have never bothered to vote in any election. It's likely they have never even been registered to vote. In fact, as I was gathering signatures for my petition of candidacy for alderman in the 4th Ward there were more than a few residents that asked me who the alderman was in their ward. These folks are totally dis-connected from the very political process that will ultimately have a tremendous effect on the quality of life they experience in Peru. I think we can be optimistic about the future of Peru. The economy is improving, albeit slowly, and more and more people seem to be paying attention and getting involved. Those of us who demand a voice in determining the future of our city understand that we will be labeled "troublemakers" by the guardians of the past. We find ourselves in good company with others in our country's history who were called the same.

STEVE HAPPY NEW YEAR! GOOD LUCK IN YOUR CAMPAIGN, I WISH YOU THE BEST. WE NEED NEW IDEAS ON THE CITY COUNCIL. I ALSO, THINK THERE ALSO SHOULD BE TERM LIMITS.

For the first time Steve I agree with you per this latest post. "YOU ARE A TROUBLEMAKER" AND WOULD BE VERY BAD FOR THIS CITY"
You have no ideas and you cannot stand up and say what you would do for the city? You do not state how you would change the Union influence in the city or How does the Union bring business and jobs to this city ? The only thing you are disappointed about is that Mayor Baker gave TEST a contract that maybe you thought should have been given to you. Quit bashing Mayor Baker & looking backward and turn your head and look to the future.
Waiting for an answer! Maybe the answer will come out in your false promises to our people of the 4th ward.
This note probably will not get published because it is biased against the wonderful STEVE.

Disappointed to see you back on the blog. Most comments lately have been intelligent well thought out postings and until you came back with your constant complaining.
There will be many changes on the city council within the next 6 months and it will be making Peru a more vibrant city with decisions being made by intelligent men and women who have seen what needs to be done to make this a city run by people who are looking out for all the citizens. A ray of sunshine on the horizon.

Anon 6:51 Steve did not say he himself is a troublemaker. He did state that Alderman O'Beirne called him a troublemaker at a open meeting because Steve reported to the Illinois Attorney Generals office that O'Beirne and Mayor Baker had knowingly violated the Open Meetings Act for the purpose of illegally negotiating a contract with Test Inc. The AG's office conducted a investigation which determined that O'Beirne and Baker had knowingly violated the OMA and a letter of reprimand was issued to the city. I am sure that Steve has many good ideas and will say what he can do for the city. In answer to your mental wanderings I must remind you that Steve is running for the position of alderman in the city, not business manager or business agent. P.S. your note was published! Steve, good luck in your campaign. Looking forward to having you represent the 4th Ward.

Anon 651; Could you please elaborate on what union influence there is? Please state specific examples! If you can recall, in your uninformed opinion, all the employees who are union agreed to NO raise this past year. Also agreed to pay more for there health insurance. How about all the money Baker spent fighting organizing of the employees, going back to the police 20 years ago. I believe the figure was around a million dollars collectively for all the departments over the years. Now that's leadership! Finally we have candidates running for office who genuinely have the city of Peru's good interests at heart! Not the what can I do for myself on the taxpayers dime. Steve is one of the most informed candidates running for office, and the people of the 4th ward will see that come April, along with the other wards. The prospects for future advancements in the city of Peru are looking bright with the election of a NEW alderman this spring! Sounds like to me anon 651 YOU are the troublemaker!

Anon 6:51 Obviously you have a vendetta against Steve and that's your perogative. Maybe you should talk to him and find out his view points and objectives. But, you have got to realize that if the Attorney General found the former Mayor and alderman O'Beirne knowingly in violation of the Open Meetings Act then things were not as they seemed in the past. And, where are you going with this Union stuff? Please explain your reasoning and thoughts behind your issue with the UNIONS. Also, if you think that alderman O'Beirnes behavior at a public meeting (calling Steve a troublemaker) was justified then you have no character either. I guess you could label me as a part of Group I - the troublemakers.

To 6:51 p.m. - Happy New Year to you too!
I would be happy to buy you a cup of coffee or a beer if you would contact me for a meeting to discuss any issue you choose. I'm in the white-pages. I have stated that my campaign website will explain my position on many issues. weberski4alderman.com will launch very soon for your viewing pleasure if you choose not to give me a call for a face to face meeting. Regarding your comment about the TEST contract. As I have stated many times on this blog, I work in the Water/Wastewater industry. I have never, nor do I now have any interest in doing business with the city of Peru in that respect or any other. But, I am very interested in knowing exactly how the city and TEST have been doing business for the past 25 years and who has been the beneficiary of all those no-bid contracts. If I am successful in April that situation will be reformed to the benefit of the city as it should be. What are so you afraid of?
