If IDNR has no money, why do they accept grant requests like the one we recently sent in for  swimming pool funding? This sounds like a legitimate safety request affecting a city's ability to respond to grass fires? Lets watch this one and see if our tax dollars in Illinois are being spent wisely.

How are most grass fires started? It seems to me that a lot of them start when someone throws out a cigarette. Why is fixing the towpath for a person's recreation any more important than a family recreation area? Why doesn't he get volunteers to do some work. I don't think the state would stop volunteers from fixing it. The Friends for Peru Pool have put in countless volunteer hours to provide something for families. If they put in half as much time, they could trim grass and weeds and fix path to prevent dangers!

Nothing to do with recreation, it is about fire vehicles and men to fight the frequent grass fires in the area without good safe access roads.

In my mind friends for Peru pool are starting to waste time...it will never happen with the mayor running the show...sooner they realize this sooner they can start returning the money

9;59 let's just get rid of this mayor and elect a new mayor will be in favor of a pool. Hopefully the FBI will do what an election didn't.

The IDNR has plenty of money. The fact is, correcting a problem on the Tow Path in LaSalle County does not buy any Cook County votes. Presently, he IDNR is nothing more than an extension of the corrupt Madigan Machine.

This article leaves many questions unanswered. Like what is the IDNR Budget and what do they do with it? It is not as simple as Mr. Volker’s claim that the “IDNR doesn’t have any money” because it does. One income stream that is shooting through the roof is the excise tax collected on firearms and ammunition. I think the issue that needs reporting is how IDNR uses its budget. Among the questionable uses are PARC Grants which fund largely urban recreation facilities. The City of Peru is reportedly looking for a $500,000 grant from the IDNR to fund a splash pad, parking lot, and other park improvements. Readers may also wonder why the NT sought the opinion of “Ottawa Cyclist” Mr. Volker. It should have been mentioned that Mr. Volker was one of the architects of the LaSalle County Forest Preserve District and Chairman of the Forest Preserve Board for its short existence. The district was created by a ballot initiative in the wake of a previous IDNR funding scare that threatened state parks. When the voters fully understood what a locally funded forest preserve district was, they promptly rejected it at the township level. So, Mr. Volker is not simply an “Ottawa Cyclist.”
