100 full-time jobs coming to Peru? - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

100 full-time jobs coming to Peru? - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

The changing world of economics presenting itself to Peru and the face of new medicine.  Is this something we should welcome? Have all the bugs been ironed out of how this works within a community as an acceptable avenue of employment?  I as many certainly have mixed feelings and believe it will lead to the acceptability  of using the product. considered to be a gateway drug by many to use of harder drugs.  To a certain extent this is an experiment because no one knows what the long term results are of  legal community development and use by many more residents in a legal manner.

Well, Willie was suppose to perform a concert a few years back in the illinois valley. Wasn't it one of his songs about a contact high? Will we have about 100 people who would be employed having a "contact high?" I wonder how many people will persist they have a medical problem to get a prescription for medical pot? O.K., back in the day I use to partake in smoking, and I do disagree that smoking pot leads to other drugs. It's choices people make in using drugs. I also recently read a report that 1 in 6 adults smoke pot. I wonder if Andy Griffith, Aunt Bee, Barney Fife, Joan Cleaver ever smoked it? Isn't arthritis a symptom in order to possibly get a perscription? I say why not get the tax revenue from it being legally grown and sold. It's out there anyway and if gramma and gram pie can fell better smoking it for their ailments, why not?? Yes, this is humorous, but true, and my opinion.

I'm not so concerned. It is only a matter of time before recreational use will be legal in Illinois. What really concerns me is that this business will be heavily regulated by the State of Illinois. Illinois is not known for open government and corruption is a way of life at all levels of the Illinois public sector. I am concerned that any economic gain will be nullified by State, County, and Local corruption. A word of advice - after this thin gets approved, keep an eye on the driveways or our local politicians.

"I wonder how many people will persist they have a medical problem to get a prescription for medical pot?"

You haven't done your research on the program at all, have you? You wouldn't be making statements like that if you had.

Jobs are important and we need them, I would like to see less government for sure

I heard that if a person lived in California today they can purchase a med card for this drug for $30.00.
I hope the Peru police are ready for the increase in drug activities in the city. Is this what are tax money will be used for ?; an increase in police force, police dogs and equipment.

I don't know, maybe I'm missing something. Why is a cultivation center and distribution network required? The whole medical use law smacks of cronyism and corruption. Why is it necessary to have hundreds of millions of dollars in overhead to distribute something that for all intents and purposes is a weed? The quantities that an individual needs for medical use could easily be grown in the home. Why not just issue a license to grow a few plants at home?

I welcome new business bringing good jobs to Peru regardless so long as it is legitimate business.
With that said, I have no confidence that Peru elected official have the slightest idea how to properly regulate and benefit from this type of business. A city manager would understand the need for proper regulation and implementation that would benefit all the citizens of Peru. The current mayor and city council will have no clue how to handle this unique situation and like so many other things they have touched, they will ultimately "screw it up". Sit back and watch closely as Chamlin and other connected business interests divvy up the engineering and construction contracts for this project and ask yourself this question. Who really runs this city anyway?

i heard the township hired a certain someone who was arrested previously for child porn- is that legal to have him working in a government job?

Anonymous said...

10:53 I know who you are talking about I believe he was fired from the city for that reason, anyone know who to contact? I saw him outside and now his truck is their everyday.

As long as he is not having contact with children, I do believe he is entitled to a job even with the twp.

ok, seems wrong, but what part of govt in this city is right anyway

Suzee's alcohol serving gambling parlor going into where the P & P convenient liquor store was located.
I have heard about these places and somehow If trueI don't this will make the city a "classy town". Could we have legally prevented this?
But heard LaSalle was getting one too.

Anyone who does not see this city sliding into a party, concert, gambling, drug center is blind.

It makes perfect sense that Peru will be the most welcoming for a pot farm.

Don't get too excited if the Pot Plant does locate in Peru because the majority of workers will be min. wage and 75% of their pay will head south and not get into the local economy. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to water a Pot Plant. Vickery is blowing smoke with those high class wage estimates.

2:59. I agree vehemently with you. Could be interesting who would apply to work there. I'm thinking of a career change.

Anonymous said...

Lets see, I think they would probably need some accountants, people to maintain the automated systems (I doubt they will have a person watering the plants). Then they will need people to run the harvesting equipment (that's probably mostly unskilled labor). What else... lets see, enough security guards to watch the place 24 hours a day 365 days a year. They will need a few shift supervisors. One big boss. Warehouse workers.
I think if you average it all out, the wage would be about $50K per year for 75 to 100 people. Unless of course the unions get involved. If it is a Union Shop, they won't even open.

What makes anyone think that PERU will get a pot factory? They will need electricity full on for 24 hours a day. With Peru's electrical rates, I highly doubt that they have a chance (this is why others want to move to LaSalle or somewhere else). Mr. Vickery makes it sound good but there will only be 1 pot factory allowed in DISTRICT 17 and that is a big area. Peru is not the only place involved. I would like to know how much money Peru has to put up front to be considered and is it refundable if they are passed up on the deal?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone thought about the economic impact this will have on the people already selling pot?

Anonymous said...

I heard the government is going to put people that get a prescription for pot on a list. Same goes for other drugs used to control people like Ritalin. Once they have the list, they will start taking away rights.
No thank you. If I need it, I'll get my pot from a trustworthy source - NOT the Government!

We are another step closer to "right to work" in Illinois.

"The U.S. Supreme Court today issued a landmark ruling for employee rights in Harris v. Quinn. The ruling wasn't just a victory for the Illinois mom who had the courage to stand up to the state's public employee unions. The decision also bolsters hopes that all government employees will one day be free from paying forced union dues as a condition of employment."

There are a number of other First Amendment vs. Forced unionization cases winding through the courts. Based on what was written in the majority opinion of the Harris case, 2015 might be the year that
"National Right to Work" is enacted - at least for public sector employees.

“…except perhaps in the rarest of circumstances, no person in this country may be compelled to subsidize speech by a third party that he or she does not wish to support.” - Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority in Harris v. Quinn

If we go right to work. Ill move. The few states that are suffer horribly in jon creation. Look at the facts

1:40 - Maybe you should start packing your bags because your statement is not true. The facts state quite clearly that Right-to-work states enjoy higher wage growth, higher employment growth, lower unemployment and higher income. Since 1990, nearly all of the top 10 states for job growth are right-to-work states, while nearly all of the 10 states with the least amount of job growth are non-right-to-work states. More broadly, 18 out of the 25 states with the fastest employment growth are right-to-work states while 19 of the 25 states with the slowest growth are non-right-to-work states. this information comes directly from the U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Many, Many union advocates have already created their own Right to Work Envirnoment. How many times I have seen a staunch union employee call a non union shop of another trade to have work done for themseves and when asked why the answer is always I can't afford to pay what the union shop wants or sure I am union but our trade is one of the lower pay scales.
Today most union people want the highest of wages and want to pay the lowest for someone else's services.
I could never understand how a union tradesman could picket a business and hand out a pamplet asking for support from someone when they would never allow this person to join their union because this person is not related to one of their membership. If you don't believe this just check the ancestorships of those involved in the trades and crafts. The only no names are transferees from other locals.

Lets hope and work for RIGHT TO WORK in Illinois. Is Texas a Right To Work state? If so, bring it on!!!! Texas is BOOMING and Never suffered in the recession. They do not have to give part of their paycheck to a bunch of lazy fat vultures.

This morning on WLPO's Rod Thorson show one of the main topics was the possibility of having a legal drug production facility within the boundaries of Peru, Il.
A couple of comments about Robert Vicery's involvement by the commentator makes one cautious of anything he is involved with.

The only economy Bobby V. develops is his own.

Anonymous said...

6:24 ??????????

Anonymous said...

Can anybody tell me what project Bob V initiated and brought to this area yet? It is my understanding that every economic development project that has come to peru was in the works long before we had an economic developer.

Anonymous said...

He brought CVS Pharmacy to town... oh wait, they where already here. But then their is Olive Garden, oh wait, they had been planning that since Red Lobster opened. Ahhh, the HyVee Expansion - nope, they did that to prevent County Market from moving into Oglesby. He got Eakas to expand their manufacturing plant... oh wait, that was a Quinn deal and Peru was not even told about it until the Governor landed at the airport. He got Unytite to build a 118,000 square foot expansion - oh wait, that went to LaSalle because Peru charges to much for electricity.
Hmmmm. So exactly what has Bobby V. been doing besides funneling advertising money to his cronies for worthless web pages? He has been buying a lot of lunches, gas for his Vickery Mobile, and blowing a lot of smoke.

Anonymous said...

What everyone is telling me is that Rod and the rest of us have no reason to be cautious because Bobby V is truthfully not involved in any development outside of his own inheritance. So why does he receive a expense account from the city? It doesn't make for good business to give money to a Director of Community Development who does no development.

11:33 AM Isn't there a difference beteen the medical and normal M. and its smoke.

Ozzy was waste and debo has been even more of waste he doesn't work a day at twp...do trustees require conflict of interest...Bs 45k and we got same crap

We already know how we can do away with the Peru Township Road District. It is simple and totally up to the City of Peru to make this happen. All we need to do is annex the small portion of Pulaski Street and Shooting Park Road west of Sycamore Lakes. After that, they will not have sufficient mileage to remain in existence.

Anonymous said...

11:49 a.m. I hope the new township trustees are working on doing exactly that. That will save the taxpayers a lot of money!

Anonymous said...

11:49 - the township will never do it. The city must take the initiative. There might also be pushback from the county since the remainder of the district roads (over by the golf course) would become their responsibility.

Perhaps peru should be renamed potters vile is going down hill so fast why not
