I think you could get a real appraisal of it for a pretty low amount. If the two opposing alderpersons wanted to get it they could.
Just like the water treatment contract, if you are an alderman really want to get a competitive bid to show how much more we are paying, you can do it. Opposition without research just looks like sour grapes.
Does anyone know what the buyer intends to do with this property? Wasn't something mentioned somewhere about jobs being added and economic development?
It's funny to see Waldorf always going with the club, the guy never has original idea and he is on the public works committee, is that why our infrastructure is so poor.
No 6:54 pm, No. The "duty" of providing appraisals or competitive bids for any city property is not the duty of the citizens of Peru. C'mon, think about it. I want my elected officials to do the best thing for me as a citizen and taxpapyer. I am not an elected official so I expect them to do what is ethically and honestly in the best interest of the majority of the citizens of Peru. You can't really be saying that "I" as a citizen have to demonstrate to my aldermen and mayor what the right thing to do is. Even if I chose to try to influence the city council "as a whole", how in the hell could I have done so when I didn't know about the property being available for sale by the city because everything was done in "closed session" and neither I nor the public had any idea that they were planning to sell it in the first place. What the hell is going on here? As a citizen in this town I'm asking what the hell is this city council doing and why in the hell do they not give a damn about encouraging input from the community before they sell 45 acres of taxpayer owned real estate? Why is this going on behind closed doors? This is bull-shit. Absolute bull-shit!
I was not saying you should do it. I was saying that the opposition alderman could come up with 150 bucks , probably from good people like you and me, just to pay a real, out of the area, third party to appraise the value.... see if it is in fact a 200 k piece of land going for 75,
Or a newspaper columnist with a small amount of gumption could expose the backroom deal.
Not suggesting you do it. It is your job to b#tch and moan, and you seem good at it.
Thank you 9:59 pm, I am quite good at it. I find it to be good therapy and a way tovent my frustration with an incompetent city council. AAAAAHHHH! That felt good,
Is there a appraiser that does appraisals for landfills. This property is nothing more than a landfill. It looks like the city got the best of this deal.
The large landfill is on the other side and is still being EPA monitored. This is on the south side of the road. Lots of things can be done with landfills. Nothing justifies this approval even as a landfill. Peru has not put anything in the way of fill in that area for a long time. Where was the toxic Peru Sheet Metal buried?
Hmmmm.... does anyone remember Love Canal? Unfortunately, Peru has a long history of selling property with issues - the original People's Hospital and Washington Park is actually the sight of the first Peru cemetery. But I'm sure they went to the trouble and expense of moving the bodies.. wink wink.
I said it SOUNDS like sour grapes. I personally think if the opposition alderpersons actually did their homework and publicized the results, it would seem less knee jerk against harl and vice versa.
If you ALWAYS vote against without some powerful data behind you, it can look the same as those lackeys who always go along.
I am all for whining and moaning here, people expect it. but you as an alderperson have the floor, can hit the others in front of the newspaper with facts, end facts to other newspapers, etc.
Calling the FBI is gutsy , but the power of research can make a difference.
And btw, there are very strict very clear rules for how you handle fill. Lots of the destruction (not construction) around here consists of buildings that would be suspect. You can bury them below grade if you cover them with clean fill within a specific time frame, but we have folks doing them by streams, setback zones, leaving them uncovered for weeks and months at a time.
This area seems to be where the suburban companies can do their work and get rid of anything they tear down without problems. Remember the power plant? The contractors did not want to do it the Peru way, so they ended up getting a local company who finished it up right quick like. I do not trust the construction companies around here to handle debris.
To 3:20 pm, You know that's probably not to far from a very real possibility. The buyer steals the property for a pittance and takes full advantage of a mayor and city council with absolutely no vision or long-term plan for Peru and he turns around and sells or leases the property to a Pot Grower for a huge profit. Now that's truly the "Peru Way" of elected officials helping to enrich their friends and political supporters. Gotta love it!
Pot farm. Now that would be a good use for a landfill. Did you know that a pot farm needs to be indoor if built in Illinois? What would you call a pittance for a landfill? What are comparables?
C'mon 9:22 am, The city did not sell a landfill. The 44 plus acres is south of the existing landfills and consists of "usable" acreage with a portion that once accepted construction debris. Not a landfill. Since you asked, I would describe a "pittance" as $75,000 for 44 plus acres. That's my take on the value. You can do your own comparables if you wish. The only relation to a real landfill involved in this transaction is the overwhelming stench of corruption that hangs over the way this deal was done consumated.
10:40 Have you been buried for the last 30 years? The area was a dump site and a place in which the city crushed rock. Usable acreage is a meaning that would promote farmland. This slu isn't farmable! The city has not used the property for anything for a long time. The area cannot not sustain a building, its in a floodplain. Good luck with your corruption conspiracy.
The major issue of the sale of the 44.7 acres is that along with the TEST contract neither was exposed to competitive bidding. Advertising and competitive bidding would have allowed a true value to be created. It must be remembered that a appraised value is no more than a persons view of what the property or service is worth.

You should never trust anyone that does business "in the Valley," especially real estate business.

6:54 pm. It's not sour grapes, it's voicing your opinion and vote, and knowing you're going to lose anyway 6-2.

If as the blogger wrote this is a landfill, are officials also monitoring it?

It is simple. If Harl is for it, we should be against it.
I heard from someone in the know that this is going to be the sight of the new pot farm.
