Something has to change! Peru Regional is NOT O'Hare or Midway where thousands move in and out every day. It only serves the rich, who can afford planes, and CEOs who jet in and out. The Plain Janes and Joes should be able to benefit once in awhile by using it. There are exceptions to every rule and now is the time to work on an exception.
FYIO - The 1.2% sales tax increase will be voted on at the Monday, August 29th meeting. Should it be a tie the mayor will be able to cast the deciding and final vote. I believe it will be history in the making for Mayor Harl. I, for one, am very interested to see how our aldermen vote. I personally am against this increase only because 1. I agree with Mr. Bianchi that the timing is all wrong and 2. that there are still many areas in our government where a great deal of money is wasted.
wasting money ... today is Saturday and the Electrical Superintendant isn"t working , however he is using Our tax dollars and doing personal business in our City Vehicle !!
Question for someone-all day today and late last night; every time the wind blows from the north there is an extremely strong stench of anise. Almost burns your nose. Do farms use that in the field or does my neighbor use something that may smell like that? Anyone have any ideas?
Anon 9:54 AM Under blog subject To the Women Who Continue Anon 12:50 PM Aug 26, 2011 has a well written comment on this subject that I am sure most bloggers would appreciate. It is very evident that Mayor Harl feels very confident that with his two handpicked appointees and the two newly elected aldermen he can now wheel and deal to a 4 to 4 council vote and he will have final input on all decisions. Through two unfortunate deaths and the last election he will have a deciding vote in many council actions. Wouldn't it be great if he would go back to his campaign platform and follow it and make the changes he promised rather than continue to look for ways to spend money that Peru does not have. The expenditure of nearly $900,00.00 on city streets this year and the redoing of Route Six plus the normal budget spent on city streets annually would be more than enough to keep everyone in Peru happy. Maybe if this would be enough to keep Mayor Harl happy the finance committee could realize the means to putting something into the electric dept. and the general fund before Treasurer Hylla has to keep taking from the electric fund to make payroll and from the pillow tax ,nearly $400,000.00 , to pump up the amount of road work this year alone. IS THE NEED TO GET ALL THIS MONEY TO DO THE ROADS IMMEDIATELY OR IS THE NEED FULFILLING UNDISCLOSED CAMPAIGN PROMISES? Let's hope not!
No this was different than James Hardie-definitely anise with maybe a slight bitterness that burned the senses. I did not smell it anywhere else in the neighborhood. I wonder if one of my neighbors to the North was baking yesterday?
How can the city administration fail to realize that the citizens do not want a approval of $7 million for roadwork without a plan when they set the example of taking $3 thousand for a bicycle path to pay to Chamlain & Associates Inc. and than disbanding the idea and never bringing it up again. Could this have been a savings program (like a Christmas Club) for the next IML extravaganza on Roger? I'll bet that a city engineer couldn't afford to throw one of those famous political bashs on a city salary. Hard to believe that Peru does not have its own city engineer and also very disappointing. Well I guess it is not too hard to believe since one of the reasons was just stated above and another could have something to do with fishing in Canada. Would it work better to share the engineering in the city rather than to keep a one firm monopoly for the last 60 years? Peru is at the point of being a strong candidate for hiring a City Manager, a City Engineer, and a Superintendent of Public Works from far away with no local ties to correct many of the past practices and poor business habits presently being utilized. Nothing would be more efficient than a good housecleaning and a completely fresh set of ideas and attitudes.
You can blame your past aldermen that Chamlin is still there. I know Harl wanted an outside SPW. also get rid of Chamlin. The council voted him down. I hope there is a tie vote. Then our mayor can break his FIRST TIE. Mayor Baker made every decision they voted on. Yes look back a couple of years, It was always 4 to 4, and Baker decided everything. I hope the .05 goes through. We need something finally done to these roads. As for Bianchi, tell him to go back to his TIFS. G.
Mayor Harl wanted to change things when he took office. Mayor Bakers cronies on the council, voted him down 8-0 every time. When you get rid of Chamlin include Frank Taylor who is useless, and the horticulrist. He is not qualified for anything. And then hire a city engineer, who has a differnt last name, other than Chamlin.
I agree with the comments directly above but what we seem to forget is that we now have some new council members (4 to be exact) and it's been over 2 years since Mayor Baker has been out of office. I have yet to hear it even suggested, let alone presented, to hire an enginner. I don't even hear it suggested that we put engineering projects our for bid.
We have one post that says previous votes were always 4-4 and Baker broke the ties, and another stating it was always 8-0 and they all voted Baker's way! Would it be better if the whole council voted 8-0 Harl's way? Hire Taxes and more spending. I hope a few will stand up to the Team and say No to higher taxes. I won't hold my breath. The political process has spooked some of our elected leaders to be part of the team or face the consequences of the organized process that will come after you.
