Peru Volunteer Ambulance web site, please click here

Peru Ambulance web site continues to remains under construction for the past 2 years and perhaps longer. No history, no personnel, nothing but music and some pictures. I keep wondering what they don't want residents to know. But the city considers them a not for profit organization that they have little control over but if you need their services, well what choice do you have? I want to know how many ambulances they have, how many crews per shift? If several transfers are needed, how many ambulances remain ready for emergencies? Do they contact other local ambulance services to notify them, that they will be short a crew? How long is the average wait to answer a call? If an emergency requires several of their ambulances out on the highways around town, who covers the city of Peru for an emergency requiring ALS especially if they have one out on a transfer out of town at the same time? How many employees do they have and what is their training? Services

Peru will miss two employees lost to early retirement incentive

Two of the good ones got out while the gettin' was good as a result of the early retirement incentive program adopted by the city council last year. Both employees worked for many years in the Public Works Department. Max Billard started his service with the city of Peru in December of 1976. Max was invaluable due to his extensive knowledge of the Water Distribution System throughout the entire city. With a total of thirty four years as a city employee and the great majority of those years working for the two Don's, aka Baker and Kowalczyk, it's safe to say Max knows where all the bodies are buried. I am looking forward to treating Max to one of his favorite cool dark beverages some time soon. Donna Merenda ran the office of Public Works during the past twenty four years for the city of Peru. I have had a few occasions to contact Donna over the past couple of years and she has always been very helpful and professional. Considering the cast of characters Donna has dealt with over the years in the Public Works Department and the blatant nepotism practiced by Don Kowalczyk and endorsed by Don Baker I commend Donna for being the sole source of integrity in that office despite several decades of corruption on the part of her superiors. Max and Donna were two of the good ones folks. Two employees who will be tough to replace. So, thank them when you see them. By the way, there are two other "longtime" employees "pulling the pin" on retirement this month as well. Their legacy is the polar opposite of Donna and Max. Suffice it to say there will be no co-worker tears shed for their loss. They have finally and reluctantly given something back to the city by deciding not to take any more from the city. We should thank them too.

Email to Illinois Department of Public Health

I feel that the residents of this city of Peru have a right to be aware of what is going on at PVAS. This is part of a letter sent to specific people in public positions.

It was part of an unsigned letter supposedly written by employees.

What is On the Horizon for PVAS Peru Volunteer Ambulance Service????

In just a few weeks La Salle will be terminating their contract with PVAS and going it alone. Is Peru prepared to handle the anticipated loss of income? And perhaps the loss of some valuable EMT's.

Considering, that as far as I know the problems at the service persist. Has Director Mark Roberson downsized the service? Has he arranged schedules for reduced travel? Have he and the Board of Directors planned for the future? Remember we do have one Board Member who will be leaving after April 5, which is really only a short time away. Since we are now all aware of the rules by which the service is governed, will Ald. Ankiewicz be choosing the replacement?

All questions that the people of Peru and Dimmick deserve to have answers to.

I also understand that a complaint has been made to the Illinois Department of Public Health about a recent change in policy.

Filling the Vacancy in the Fourth Ward

Peru mayor outlines plans to replace alderman

By Jeff Dankert
perureporter@newstrib.com
Mayor Scott Harl laid out a plan Wednesday to appoint a replacement for Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Wren, who died Jan. 28.

Harl asked interested appointees to submit a letter to him with their name, address, how long they resided at their address and the position they seek (fourth ward alderman).

Citing state municipal law, Harl explained at Wednesday’s council meeting he would take letters of intent until Feb. 28, interview people, and appoint someone by March 28 to serve the remainder of Wren’s term, which ends in spring of 2013.

Too little time was left (67 days) between Wren’s death and the April 5 election, and there was too little time left in his term (26 months) to use this spring’s election to fill the seat, Harl said, citing state law.

Should the council reject Harl’s first two appointment choices, he can make an appointment without the council’s approval. This was placed in state law to prevent a council or board from repeatedly obstructing filling of a seat, said Doug Schweickert, the city’s attorney.

“There is nobody in that family who is interested in that seat,” Harl said. The family is keenly interested in who gets appointed, he said.

Notes Along the Campaign Trail in Peru

Hoping to hear from the candidates as they venture into their campaigns for Peru Alderman. And of course from our residents.

Illinois River Road - Princeton, Illinois

Take a minute from all the snow and ice and think about warmer days, places here on this video that would make an interesting visit this summer.

Illinois River Road - Ottawa, Illinois

Enjoyed this video but disappointed not one thing mentioned of Peru. Can you suggest something historic in Peru that we could suggest to them for future promos.

City Audit by Clifton Gunderson Available to the Public

Clifton Gunderson is delivering copies of the audit to the Clerk's office Friday morning. The copies are for public distribution so if anyone would like a hard copy of the audit prior to next Wednesday's Finance Committee Meeting they should be able to pick one up Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Our Treasurer will also have the audit available in pdf format so it can be emailed to those whom wish to have it delivered electronically. the email address for requests is ghylla@peru.il.us if they would like a copy emailed to them. The audit is easier to read this year and is 94 pages versus the 169 page be-moth we had in previous years plus it contains a considerable amount of information.
