Meeting of Williams Aquatic Re: Pool - Open Government I Don't Think So

Monday morning there was a meeting with Williams Aquatics of Carol Stream IL. at the Municipal Building.  Five gentlemen consisting of architects and engineers came to Peru to evaluate the condition of the city swimming pool.
Several residents including myself were discouraged from attending the meeting by the Mayor's secretary and when we did come she would not allow for any audio taping of the proceedings so I do not have many of the details of the meeting other than a few quick notes. The Secretary said she would take minutes as she was in attendance, so I will ask for them. Dave Bartley said he was present to keep track of finances.  Gary Bleck was present but had no previous knowledge of the pool because his previous job did not entail working on it. Unfortunately the meeting was scheduled when Mayor Harl was out of the country and the Recreation Committee chairman Tony Ferrari was unavailable because he was working. Neither Ald. Mertel or Ald. O'Beirne attended.
I wonder if the other Recreation Committee members were informed of the meeting.
Basically Williams wanted to know about the construction of the pool and repairs that have been done through the years.
K. Drennan came in to tell of the testing that was done back in March and how it was done. Other than that there was no more good reliable information to give the company. They felt they should have a rough draft done of their inspection by May 1 and will present it to the City Council on May 10.

Lois, do you know if those instructions were given to the secretary or did she make those decisions on her own? And what would be the reason for not allowing the recording of the meeting? What was discussed that could not be publicized?

I certainly would like to have answers to those questions. The meeting was very informative and certainly nothing that should be kept secret from any interested Peru resident was discussed.

Lois - were you as surprised as I was that neither Alderman Ferarri nor the pool man Mr. Drennan were present at the meeting? Those are the main two who have the most interest and time invested in this project. I found this very unusual.

Lois, I thought the mayor's secretary retired.

Mrs Potthoff who was Mayor Baker's secretary for many years retired last May or June. At that time Judy Heuser's niece whom she hired for some job at city hall was chosen by Mayor Harl as her replacement. Judy had hired her several years ago and there is a long story associated with that also.

I knew the Aldermen were not coming due to the timing of the meeting during their work hours. I believe Jack O'Beirne has had prior commitments recently.

Is miss Heiser a Peru resident?

As far as I know, no she does not live in Peru but lives in Spring Valley.

You have to be kidding!! The Mayor's clerk is from Spring Valley, the city bus driver is from Ottawa and the exbuilding inspector was from Dalzell. How does a Peru resident get a Peru City job??? Move-out of town!!! Don't we have any Peru citizens who are unemployed? By the way, when was the last hiring made in the City of Peru.

Lois please tell us the long story associated with Judy hiring her niece.

Is she really Mayor Harls' secretary, or does she think she is? I can't believe she is a qualified secretary. He sure needs someone who knows more than she does. I think Mayor should hire someone more professional, dresses professional to be his secretary.
I'm sorry, but she doesn't give you a good first opinion, of what a city officials, secretary should look, or act like.
I'm afraid the apple did not fall far from the tree.

Do you mean our aldermen wanted to start patching the pool, even though, there are issues of safety. Why don't they give the same standard to the pool, they gave to the ball diamond? Instantly when the word was safety, the ball diamond was dug up within the same week. Now they want to patch something that could injure innocent children. Aldermen, Where are your priorities????????

Lois - the comment on April 23 at 9:13 should probably have a post of its own. If not that at least put it under the newest heading.
