The Williams Aquatics group has given the City of Peru an overview of what they see at first look and how they will proceed with further investigation of the swimming pool.
Minutes were written by Williams Architects and not be any Peru officials or employees.
Their study will include pros and cons and the estimated costs of recommendations, a zoning and code analysis will be a part of the study. The report will evaluate the existing facility for accessibility and it will comment on the existing pool as it relates to the new Illinois Swimming Facility Act adopted February 3, 2010 and the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Safety Act (VGB) effective Dec. 19, 2008. (not in compliance at this time!) Also need a swimming pool permit by the Illinois Department of Health prior to making VGB improvements. The VGB permit review is typically a long process that can take a least a couple of months to secure.
Along with the significant cracks and de-lamination, there are a number of other issues with the pool, including safety, age, lack of accessibility, code violations, lack of code compliance and continued maintenance problems.
The city has been patching the pool floors and walls on alternating years and freeze-thaw cycle damage continues to occur. Ground seems very saturated.
Need to locate the existing sanitary sewer that the pool gutters flow into as no one present was sure where they are. Other existing site utilities, including water, storm, electric and natural gas will be investigated by Chamlin.
It is believed the drainage pipe under the deep end is perforated which contributes to the saturation problem. And we know that excess water is being deposited into a nearby ditch into the storm water drainage that is always flowing through the creek.
I believe that the 5 page summary must have been given to each of the aldermen in their packet. The one comment made by an aldermen to Gary Bleck was "Can we start patching the pool?" And he replied that the company had said "Absolutely not"
I cannot believe that question was even asked.

Do these aldermen not get that fact that this is a SAFETY ISSUE!!
Lois, I always thought that the swimming pool did not make any money for the city. So why is this such an issue with the aldermen on insisting that the pool be opened.
Lois - Are you kidding me? An alderman asked if they could start patching the pool while we're paying $15,000 to have it tested and evaluated! Why do you think they are in such a hurry to patch it and fill it? I don't believe it's because they care that much about the children who will use it. If that were the case I would think they would want it tested, evaluated and proven safe (by experts) before even considering opening it. It seems to me that we are wasting our money because I feel they're going to open it no matter what the outcome of the evaluation. Just my opinion and just curious!

Do you mean our aldermen wanted to start patching the pool, even though, there are issues of safety. Why don't they give the same standard to the pool, they gave to the ball diamond? Instantly when the word was safety, the ball diamond was dug up within the same week. Now they want to patch something that could injure innocent children. Aldermen, Where are your priorities????????

It would be a good thing to know the alderman who made the comment to Gary Bleck about patching the pool. His competency should also be evaluated (along with the pool) for the coming elections. Isn't this part of the Freedom of Information Act recently outlined in this blog. What is said is important - but what we do (or want to do) with the knowledge imparted is even more important. Peru cannot continue down this path of being lead without good, solid, educated citizens using "common sense" in their voting privileges.
I agree with ANON 11:03 but what I don't understand is why our council has been so bound and determined to keep our swimming pools open at any cost. They went through a similar discussion with regards to the indoor pool. It appears that pools are more important to them for some reason than education, our schools, and our library. We, as citizens of Peru, need to become more involved in our government and educated as to where our aldermen stand on vital issues. This needs to be done immediately so we cast an intelligent and well informed vote at the next election of 4 of our aldermen. Attend council meetings, question your aldermen, become involved.
Does anyone know whom the alderman was, that said to start patching. He should be impeached.
Can you do that to an alderman????
It was stated on another another post, that the alderman was Bob Ankiewicz and Jamie Mertel agreed also.
Don't know about impeachment probably not.
