No Swimming Pool and Lots of Flowers and a Splashpad

And to Think the City Could not Fund a Swimming Pool

Did the public works committee, who voted on this expense, ($140/planter/80planters) get the 3 quotes needed for any project between $5000 and $20,000? Didn't they just recently re-establish this purchasing policy? The same will hold true for the tree planting if and when it gets voted on.

According to Mondays city council agenda an additional $110,000 will be added to the splash pad tally. Also, Seth Brannan will be in charge of the pad at a cost of $7500. I'm sure there will be additional kids hired to overlook the pad this summer.

Curiosity question - was the position of splash pad manager posted somewhere?

Very good question. I don't have an answer but hope someone does.

the city has never looked better and more is supposedly in the works. I think the splash pad is going to be used way more than a pool and it is a gem. Hopefully with the ice-skating rink it will be a year round facility park. This is all good stuff. there is just a small group of Peru haters who cant stand to see such good things happening. that is a shame.

agree with ya 353. it is very obvious there is a group, a small one at that, who cant see the good because they are so blinded by there personal animosity to the mayor and council and staff. there 15 minutes was up long time ago but they cant take it. Keep working hard for us Peru. we are a great city regardless of these people and there agendas.

This comment doesn't belong under this heading but I don't know where else to place it. The "minutes of closed sessions" listed on the city website tell us nothing. Two of them reference the mayor leading a discussion of the purchase of a particular parcel of land. That's it. No location. No reason for purchase. Word on the street is that these closed sessions are not about property but instead about topics that could easily be discussed openly at a "COMMITTEE OF A WHOLE MEETING". Why the need for the secrecy and the lack of truth to the residents of Peru?

There seem to be a group of people who enjoy calling people who disagree with them or else just have alternate views, derogatory names, in particular "haters" seems to be their favorite. On FB, I have seen a few people who openly express the word "hate" in connection with Peru but as usual most people are just expressing the point about not agreeing with some of the things done in Peru by their city government.
As has been said before, most of city government operates in closed session without knowing or even caring what their residents think of a topic. The last I heard we are still living in a Democratic Republic and people have a right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution to express their feelings. So respectfully ask that the power brokers of the city show a bit more respect to its residents.

well sorry to have to be the one to tell you this but people all over the area think you are haters

You are hanging with a bad bunch because the people I know in Peru don't talk about haters.

Please don't worry about a pool when you have something bigger to worry about...Bergner closing. Where are you going to buy your expensive shirts and dresses? But wait, our great BV says to not jump to conclusions. Maybe he's planning the largest Chik-Fil-A in the world to replace them. The real reason for Bergners leaving is the loss of the fireworks show.

Since Peru has spent very little money of its own on for this splash pad will it charge admittance. Being built by state grant money free admittance only makes common sense. After all non residents already pay for Peru schools and streets with Peru's 1/2 cent increased sales tax.

Correction on your comment 10:17 AM

Donation from J.A. Happ was $100,000
State Grant $300.000

Subtract 400,000 from at least $2,000,000.00 and that means that you and I and our fellow citizens paid 1 million six hundred thousand dollars at least before doing additional work on the park.

But I do believe admission might be free. Any corrections on my math?

Excuse me but it is not your math that needs to be corrected. It is your 2 million dollar quote. Peru, a town of only 9,900 people surely has not build a multi million dollar water park without a referendum. What is considered the average cost of a public water park? For someone who is normally right on the bubble you have flubbed the dub. Are you sure that you didn't mean $200,000?

The total cost includes much more than a splash pad. It also includes a walking path and the relocation of utilities and I believe a new water main.

How many people in Peru are not actual taxpayers? Plenty of People rent and will not help pay any of the city taxes.

Any figures on that?

I have news for you. Renters pay taxes. They just pay it through the rent. I own property and can assure you that cost and all others get passed along to the renter. Just because they don't mail the check does not mean they don't pay rent. Seriously.

I've not been on here forever and just read through some of the comments. Could you be any more negative? No town is perfect by wow. I remember a time when there were at least once in a while a reasonable discussion here. Now there is nothing but a few odd, negative comments. I feel strange even posting, but wanted to clarify who is paying the rent.
