The Peru Mall is proof that without a structure re-design and updated corporate retail stores to replace the outdated traditional ones it's future is limited. That the outdated were leaving is not a surprise since Penny's, Sear's and Bergner's gave ample warning that they were closing in Peru, Illinois retail mall. What is surprising is that Peru's Economic Director has not produced any possible replacement or ideas for usage of this space and lost revenue (both sales tax and wages). Those 5,000+ airline tickets to China and a long list of exorbitant expense accounts should have produced something by now.

Yes, I agree that indoor malls are a thing of the past but I know that there are modern updated retail ideas and structures now being created. Another trip to Las Vegas to obtain promises for the future which have never developed are not maintaining sales taxes.
Robert Vickrey has had a fair span of time as Peru Economic Director and shown that Mayor Harl must recruit a person with ambition and vision of the needs of the future before we are once again the Little Sister of LaSalle.

Although out of town hiring's are proven to be frowned upon and hiring local relatives and friends with closed mouths have been the popular thought of the day, Peru must start to look far and wide to maintain future development. Mayor Harl must become more of a hands on leader rather than a Mayor who hires assistants for those occupations which are not full time jobs themselves. Highly questionable are the Human Resource Director, the City Engineer and above all the PSM King who are relieved of duties but still maintain the same wages plus pay increases. This is only heard of in Peru Politics!

News on the grapevine is that Peru may be actually bringing in the long desired new theater. This makes sense as if the Mall goes down completely, there would possibly be no theater in Peru. Still don't think the next to Hyvee is a good idea because of the jam up of traffic that would be happening no matter where the exit/entrance would be
Would explain Vickery's cheery outlook.

Do you truly believe that Peru and Mr. Vickery are actually bringing in the long desired new theater or that it is a concession of saving face that they did not accept Dick Janko's offer of a couple of years ago? Vickrey has no more reason for a cheery outlook other than someone has once again covered for his complete lack of business knowledge. Watch for Bobbie to accept a huge unearned pay increase when the theater is accepted.

There's a good editorial about Bergner's in today's P J Star

You do realize that its not up to the City of ED Director what happens? The City does not own the mall. It is the owners of the mall that are causing it to fail and not making changes except for increasing rent.

There also may be many things in the works the public is not aware of. And for good reason. Things can change quickly and some retailers do not want the public to know if until things are definite. The City was aware that Chipotle wanted to locate here for a long time before it was announced. There are SO MANY things that take place behind the scenes before retailers and restaurants decide to make they move.

It is definitely time for changes. Hopefully we will be seeing more "current" successful retailers moving to our area. But we must be patient.

You have a very good understanding of retail procedures and understand city and ownership responsibilities. The City of Peru has certain available characteristics which when offered to major investors make Peru a prime location. Peru of course obtains its payback in the form of sales taxes plus Peru can create a environment of lowering excessive rent and needed updating.
Yes there are things that the public is not aware of but in small towns the smoke arises rapidly and secrets travel away at top speed. I agree that it is time for change and time to evaluate the present effectiveness of Perus's recruiting program and goal objectives. Peru has a unlimited potential which needs to be shaken often for continuous success.

Your understanding of retail is dismal at best. There is a world outside of Peru. In that world you have major retailers struggling to stay alive, Peru has nothing to do with Bergner's, Sears or JC Penny closing. Your blame at the city leader's is comical. Retail dollars in Peru has not left, according to recent figures....Peru is still doing well. The change to on-line shopping and the loss of many major clothing retailers is a problem with every sight in the USA. Peru is not unique.

The question is if the mall will reinvent the retail area. As we have scene in recent reports the Mall has had some tax relief, it has also created a TIF to possibly finance the improvements. City leaders have very little to do with the ownership ideas. It appears that they have given the Mall the incentives to carry out the renewal and it appears the Mall owners won't be closing the doors like so many other Malls across the country. This is good news for the area. To put a fork on the Mall is very premature and not accurate according to all the indicators----lower taxes, financial incentives and interest in the major retail area in Peru.

Thank you 12:35. Common sense and reasonable comments like yours could bring people back to the blog. Blaming the economic development director for the failings of the mall is comical. Malls everywhere are closing. It is so funny and sad at the same time when people do not understand the basic fundamentals of economics.
